  • I did this episode because people are always asking me about my musical background I guess because I post on a pretty diverse set of topics. I tell the story of my musical training and inspiration. I'm sorry if I left anyone out. It was only because I had to edit it down. Let me know if you have any more questions or topics that you want me to cover. I have more producer/mixer videos and filmscoring videos coming out this week. Thanks for watching!! Rick

Meeting a person like you, even if only thru the net, makes life worth living for. The warmth and love that you share thru your music lessons makes one look forward to life itself, and all the wonderful music it has to offer. Music and the guitar has been my passion and my very reason of life since about the last 30 years. I am 52 now. I am from Assam,India. I had always dreamed about learning and playing jazz music, but could never afford to go somewhere and take a course. There is no jazz teaching institute in my part of the country. I just have a few books, and a few lessons from youtube. I often visit the Berklee college site and just scroll around gazing at the photographs, and wishing that if there is a next life, i pray i can learn the guitar, and music there. Been just a few days since i came across your videos. And today i watched this one,and it was like my dream life since childhood till now, portrayed by your life. I dunno if im making sense. It doesnt matter. Thanks for everything.

Thank U from Madrid, Spain. You channel and your persona is inspiring me back into music. I was a profesional flamenco and jazz flute player for about 7 years, which I loved. In the middle of it I got hook to drugs, and soon a disaster came. As many other I was born again which helped me with everything, but I left the music scene. The last 8 years its been a rebuilding process, I´m now married and have a beautiful daughter. Somehow, because of the pain I left music aside and founded hard to love it again. Because of my latest jobs I´m getting into composition and orchestration and the love is slowly coming back. Somehow, your love for pouring back what you learned (and that you love both jazz and classical) is helping me immensely. Muchas muchas gracias... bless you brother and keep it up.. it is helping me in deeper ways

Mr.Beato, I just wanted to say that I'm a 39 year old, former professional musician who hasn't picked up a musical instrument in over three years. I still had the desire to play, but just not the situation, and I came across your videos a few weeks ago. You have reinforced my love of music and my desire to write and record. Thanks to your videos, I have a new found love and excitement for music that I haven't had since I was probably 22 and touring the country. I really appreciate that and just wanted to formally thank you. God speed.

Just finished watching 2 of your excellent videos. I’m 71 and have been interested and played over the years, and found your story very inspiring ( see what you can do to an old timer ). I wished you had been around with these instructional videos back then. Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to share your talents. I will keep watching and learning. ( I hope ). They say there is only 2 things you can improve on as you age, art and music. Because of your videos I’ll keep plunking.

So Interesting he didn’t live a life of fame but he has made significant contributions to the music industry on so many levels as a teacher a producer a hit writer. He replicates Pat Metheny with such ease, very few people on the planet can do that this is top notch musicianship .I relate to his love for Jazz, classical as well as classic Rock .
    Great stuff!

Hi Rick. Steve Brown here.(not yours, but I love it). I started playing clarinet in 6th grade then moved onto Bass. learned Theory at Tulane in New Orleans. Where I also picked up tenor sax. It's funny cuz the Brandenburg concertos always got me going also. Thank you for reminding me how much I love music and how much I actually remember. I didn't realize it was as much as I thought. PLEASE Keep it going. Millions of people appreciate what you do for us. Not many people can truly lay claim to that.

Comments written here can do no justice to the profundity of inspiration and encouragement received by us/me. I too am 54 and love passing on what I have been given(so I can identify with you). I've been surrounded by musicians all my life (and have 5 musical children), I've never considered myself to be a musician, but count myself fortunate to be allowed to mingle with them. I do not have the capacities necessary to do much more than 'adequate' , but I try. Your videos help to take the scariness out of the subject and inspire to enjoy whatever level we might be able to achieve. Thank you.

As a teenager that's becoming highly interested in learning jazz and classical music, I'm having trouble finding resources to learn about the gap between beginners and advanced music theory. I understand basic melody and harmony, however I don't know how to progress to chord voicings and understanding usage of specific chord tones in a scale, for example. Videos about that would be very helpful, in my opinion. Also I wanted to say, your channel is very informative and interesting, and knowing about your history certainly is motivating me to inmerse myself in the musical world.

For me, it is always a challenge to reconcile the depth and inspiration of videos such as Rick's - which are musical, cultural, foklorical, human - with feelings of disconnection, inactivity, loneliness and lethargy which can be brought on by hours of screen staring and internet use - which are, really, a rapid and stark departure from the millennia of past human behaviour.
I wish you strength and optimism!

I wrote one time , and repeat again , THANK YOU Mr. BEATO , you open my mind and gave me a lot of joy and I'm studying again so much. I'm braziilan ,62 years old , living in France since 1991. I tried several times the Visa to study at Berklee , they never gave me, 'cause, they knew I was going to stay in USA, was my dream. But, "life is what happens to us when we're busing making plains ", as said Lenno in a song to Sean, so... I'm a lazy guitariste, but you made me come back to reality and STUDY again , and believe in myself again ,also! Really, my thanks to you , and it comes from my hear! Soon I will send you some little demos, playing, and also singing , 'cause I''m a unknowed composer , from the 70's until today.God Bless You and your family! You're the friend that every guitar player need to be happy and keep going this wonderful instrument .

Thanks for doing what you do and being a straight-up lover of all things music, and a breath of fresh air in this modern music world we have today...

Rick, I scrolled and scrolled to see if there was an earlier comment on this anachronism and could not find one. When you mention your dad seeing Charlie Christian, it sounds as if you're saying it was at the bar he worked at starting in the late 40s. Charlie Christian died in 1942. Your dad must have seen him with Benny Goodman on a tour date in Rochester back in the early 40s. Your personal stories are some of my favorites among your videos. Keep 'em coming.

(Today is March 6, 2020.) I discovered this channel about 18 months while living in Santiago, Chile. Rick's stories and teacings - not to mention his playing - remain consistent, thought-provoking and some of the highest quality content I have ever come across. Thank you, Rick, for taking the (incredible amount of) time to share and to teach.

So, so, so inspiring. I started playing music at 14 and then for several reason I stopped for many years. Thanks to you I'm back into that world. Starting from scratch has never felt this great. Thank you, Rick!

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m in the Rochester area but am from Niagara Falls, NY. Been here since 89. I read music, played the flute as a kid in school, taught myself how to play some piano and later got a keyboard I play with. I LOVE music. I’ve a 27 yr. old nephew in the Buffalo area who started guitar when he was 5 and picked up dad’s guitar and played around with it. Dad taught him a few chords and a couple years later he wanted lessons so they gave him lessons. In Jr. and Sr. High he played in the orchestra, upright bass and in the jazz ensemble his guitar. He also started giving guitar lessons when he was in 11th grade while still taking some of his own. He’s played with a band all through high school. When he went to Buff State he played a bit but was busy with school too. Nowadays he’s 27, his gal plays bass, and he plays with a couple bands all around Buffalo and even here in Rochester a few times. I learn more from you that means I can talk music and guitar with him. :) I have been enjoying your videos for a few months. Thank you!

I'm an absolute beginner to all of this.
Thank you so much for the time you spend preparing and performing the videos for everyone, Rick.
    I appreciate it greatly.
Having neither the money nor time for proper education makes it a treasure hunt so to speak. Every little bit of quality helps greatly.

My deepest respect for living, sharing and just owning that story of yours, Rick! I should say, I am rarely touched by words alone the way I am right now. Doesn't go far enough to tell you how thankful I am to you for the know-how, ideas and mindsets you share on the channel. Wish you and your children all the best

Rick, I found out about you about one month ago, because I wanted to see how compressors work, because I just started working with midi and ableton. Your video was by far the best and most detailed one. Then I saw all these suggestions for the videos in which you explain modes and they really brought together what my guitar teacher tought me 10 years ago. You put a lot of value on youtube and I recommend you to everybody who wants to learn about music theory. Thank you!
