One thing I'd note about this version, it is really METAL that we see Scrooge grasp the arm and fight the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-come... Who is basically Death. Not many versions have that, which is a shame as it loses the 'was that a dream' bit afterwards when he wakes fighting the curtains.
In all fairness, the glimpse of the Lord Mayor's Christmas celebration is given a mention in the novel--I guess they were just trying to be as faithful as possible. But the 2009 Disney animated version touched on that without lingering on it for five minutes!

About the “bob crochett” comment, something people seem to forget back in the 19th century and before it wasn’t unlikely for families to have 8, 10 or even more though it was uncommon for more than 10, my own great grandparents families had 6 and 7 children in them though my nan and pop only had 3 so it was becoming less common after the 1950s.
Very true-most kids died early so the idea as that eventually SOME kid could grow up and inherit the business. Especially poorer families. Even better off families had a lot of kids: Dickens and Darwin, despite being well off from book sales, had 10 children each.

great riff, on a film i feel is actually a fairly decent version of the classic story. it is certainly a great deal better then an acclaimed stage performance i seen at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis which turned the story into a cheery sing along musical and made the Muppet version seem serious and dark.
The Muppets film was actually darker than most would expect. Especially in the third ghost section, it still deals with serious concepts, like death and poverty.
Note that prior to 1970 and Sir? Albert Finney in the movie musical “SCROOGE”, there was NO “Scrooge falls to his death after setting his grave trope” scene.

You know this movie proves that just because you did something first doesn't mean you did it right. There was so many pointless scenes to this one, now a lot of later productions of a Christmas carol would also have some pointless scenes like full on musical numbers but they didnt seem tacked on. secondly, no effects for the ghosts really? I know this was the great depression but come on even silent versions of a Christmas carol had some visuals to them, really without the ghosts to see it looks more like Scrooge is going insane rather then learning the true meaning of Christmas

I've just worked out something this movie is so old that it was made in 1935.. 87 years ago and it was supposed to take place in London, 1843...88 years before this movie was made. I thought Scrooge was rich, why does he always look like he was in a bin... even his house is jacked up. Looking nappy when you're rich is the norm but come on now.
It's part of the point of the story - he's an absolute miser, preferring to hoard his wealth than actually spend it on anything. He'd rather sleep in a dark, drafty, cold house than spend any of his money on better accomadations.
