@theresastuppiello9589 I know those superficial aspects of it but if you go to the original adult fiction book Wicked and then on to the theater play/musical which all revolves around this whole idea of a friendship and that she's not really wicked and on and on and blah blah blah it has nothing whatsoever to do with the original spirit and facts of the original book and movie. So stop just pointing out superficial two-dimensional similarities.
I agree, they are trying to paint evil as "not really evil when you look at it." Nonsense, make a new IP for that. They did the same thing with Maleficent, which had been evil: "Now, shall you deal with ME, O Prince - and all the powers of HELL!"
@@orangeygaming7212 so what? Yes there are superficial similarities. Educate yourself by reading the original book and then compare it to the adult fiction book Wicked upon which the theater musical and movie now is based upon. Again, educate yourself instead of relying on superficial observations.
There was also a massive political narrative. The original Wizard of Oz was deeply esoteric and archetypal in nature. The Wicked story is an inversion of this. With Dorothy portraying the goddess/Persephone aspect, Oz being her subconscious mind/the underworld, the Wizard being her inner Christ Consciousness, the wicked witch and the good witch being the dualistic nature of the Sophia, the emerald city being the heart, the yellow brick road being the central channel up which the kundalini rises, and the characters in Oz, being unhealed aspects of her that get healed within the heart. There’s probably more to it than this, but you get the gist. To invert this is, quite literally, satanic/Ahrimanic.
Absolutely perfect explanation! Thank you for writing this comment. This movie truly seems wicked. Years ago the wanted to make Maleficient appealing also. They don't understand these myths. And clearly don't have enough imagination to write new stories. Or perhaps there are just satanic motives here. Because it's inverted it appears completely bland and boring.
Another, "it's ok to be Evil if you Feel justified, Villains are actually just misunderstood, and Evil is Entitled to be free even if they're Guilty" child conditioning "film"...
Baum wrote The Wizard of Oz as a political treatsie espousing the free and unlimited coinage of silver. The yellow brick road symbolizes the gold standard which backed the dollar during those days. The Tin man was the Northern working man electorate, The Cowardly Lion was William Jennings Bryant, the girl, Dorothy was symolic of the Populist Movement which was centered in the Mid-West. Every character represents a part of the political scene in the 1890's. Scholars have known this since the 1890's. The Wizard was the President of the US of course. We studied this in college, a long time ago before gender studies.

I saw the movie and thought it was stunning. Russell’s take is correct-the archetypal nature of the story shines through anything else in the way. Really the story of two unlikely best friends who make choices that impact their relationship, along with showing the power of kindness, and the consequences of becoming disillusioned and embittered. Soooo many deep lessons I was able to extract for my 7 year old daughter who saw it and absolutely loved it. Also, Amala Ekpunobi did an EXCELLENT review of the movie!
I agree it was a great movie. As someone who saw the original broadway production in the early 2000s as a kid, I appreciated that they stayed true to the source material. I have loved Wicked since I first heard Defying Gravity in 2004. Then... I fell in love with the story. And I feel a lot of people are missing the brilliance of it. Wicked is about courage. It's about standing up to authority and speaking truth to power and standing up for what's right, even if that means you're on your own. It's about the power of propaganda and state character assassination. Who is good? Who is evil? It all depends on our level of courage and who we decide to listen to. And lastly, it's about female friendship. The musical will always be my first love and my favorite cause.. live is always better. That said, the movie was amazing.

Hollywood celebs have an entourage of people managing their day to day lives. From shoots and interviews to the clothes they wear, every little detail is decided for them. That’s why they appear to be out of touch.
I used to work in and around the entertainment industry here in L.A., and you are exactly right about all that you have just said. I was working for a unique high end store called Maxfield's in West Hollywood and was sent with one of the salespeople to Lionel Ritchie's house where we went with two full racks of clothing for him to try on and get his Fashion Consultant's approval to buy and start using. The clothing I was told he was getting rid of equaled almost the same amount we brought with us, and everything looked like it had only been worn once or maybe twice and never touched again.
It's not that they "appear" to be out of touch, it's why they are out of touch. These actors and actresses have no concept of what "real" is because they don't live in reality.
The holly tree (wood) used to cast spells. It's the revelation of the method they have to tell you what they're doing and you accept it without objecting.
Don't follow the herd, thinking this movie is for young children. It is full of violence and darkness. I think you said your children are 6 and 8 years old. I strongly feel that the movie is not appropriate for that age.
I really liked it!! Hated that it was part 1 though…. And now we have to wait a year for the second half …. It was pretty extraordinary… and man those girls can sing!!!
In the books, they used the word "Wicked" as a descriptor because it sounds as harsh as describing someone as "Hitler". The whole premise is about how pointing fingers and hyperbolizing someone's otherness is a reflection of the ones pointing. I think this movie both sides of the political extremes need to hear. It's about herd mentality and being afraid of that which is different.
Judy Garland was 16 when they filmed the movie. She wound up on drugs, smoking and drinking during the whole film due to stress and other factors. It caused her to die younger
Someone else may have mentioned (I can’t be bothered reading over 400 comments!) that “The Wizard of Oz” wasn’t the first colour film. Off the top of my head, I can think of “A Star is Born” from 2 years earlier, which was made in Technicolour, but there were also colour films made by hand-painting each frame, going back to the silent period. “The Wizard of Oz”, with its switch from black and white to colour, was revolutionary, which is why many think it’s the first colour film.
The trailer has so much in it you feel like you've seen the whole movie already! It's hilarious that in the original book, the author says in the introduction that he's setting out, in effect to write a modern fairytale which merely entertains because in his words "modern education includes morality" so children's stories don't need to teach them anything which is weird because the story itself is clearly an allegory trying to teach you something.

Wicked falls into the category of films where I will probably give it a watch when it comes out on DVD and I can borrow it from the public library for free. That way I can see what the fuss is about, turn it off if I don't like it, and save money.
This is one of the better productions to come out of Hollywood. They made some scenes longer than they needed to be but the dancing, music, costumes and singing was great. I had tried to read the book which was very twisted and perverted but the musical is fun and very entertaining.
The whole point of all entertainment and music in the west is to manipulate your emotions - to get you excited, scared, disgusted, to brutalise and desensitise you, and triggered. Dopamine addiction. The antidote is extreme sobriety.
I love that self realization you shared when you brought up Jeff n then said "oh, that's jealousy" ❤ and that is how you transmute jealousy into humility.
Creating a "really bad enemy" is nothing new. If you create a boogie man to unify people against, it's actually a clever and nefarious way to manipulate the public. The more you know.........🤗🤗🎆🎇
This musical has been around for 20+ years and the political and social themes have ALWAYS been relevant. What you see people arguing about right now is interpretation in regards to how the political allegory makes “their side” the protagonists or antagonists as it relates to the modern political/social world… but as I said, this musical was never written with today’s world in mind. So guess what it doesn’t have to be controversial 🙄 I for one just wish people would shut up and just enjoy it (or not, if they don’t like musicals).
Jesus, yeah I’m a free thinker like everyone else who would watch Russles channel. But there’s so much hate here in the comments. And sadly I kinda just see me from another lenses I guess. I’ve said a lot of these comments about literally every other movie/short series however I’ve been a fan of this specific musical since I was little (so I am biased) but they actually did it justice. I get it’s annoying to see the interviews but maybe just stay off your phone as much lol. But I completely agree, shut up and watch it. Or don’t.
Saw the movie and enjoyed it very much. The sets, costumes, all the art was superb. The voices of the two lead characters were so perfectly matched to blend beautifully. It wasn't a perfect movie, but it was far above mediocre. As to the "morality of a Christian going to see it, I think each one should follow their own conscience. In other words, follow the Holy Spirit's leading. I think we all know the answer to the question of whether we are born evil. Yes, we are all sinners in need of a savior. But, understanding a perso'ns story helps us to have compassion for other sinners. And maybe it gives us pause to thank God for our own lives and His intervention in them. If I were to take children to the movie I would definitely talk about it with them afterward. This is one way we teach them discernment and wisdom.
In the wizard of Oz book, the scarecrow represents the hapless farmer of the 1890s who constantly undermines his own interests (ie needs to get a brain). The tinman represents the heartless industrialist. The lion represents the cowardly politician afraid to make the hard choices. The wizard is the government trying to manipulate the people. It was a book of pretty accurate depictions of the modern society of the times. And these times for that matter. Don't quite see that with this film however.
Um... I'm wondering how many people in the comments section have seen the full musical? Elphaba does horrible things and it's not presented as her being awesome, so I don't know what people are talking about when they say it's a portrayal of the villian being the victim or being good. The overall message is that we are all flawed and our choices determine our destiny. Elphaba is no hero, and anyone who comes to that conclusion is missing the plot.

A friend asked me to read Wicked in 2003 when I was in Iraq. I found it to be a deeply vile and sinister fiction novel. In spite of the fact that the biggest money making films are rated G, Hollywood will continue to put most of it's production money into the darkest and most violent films for public consumption and influence. The movie doesn't appear as terrible as the book though.
Before this was a movie, it was a Broadway musical & before it was a musical it was a book. I’ve only read the book, many years ago. It was very political, dealing with class & equality. I’m sure it’ll be an over the top woke message with a bunch of color & flare. It’ll have some great scenes for sure, its original story was taken from a phenomenal movie. But until we come up with some original stuff they’ll just continue to butcher everything that came before it, sadly.
Oh the book is waaaay darker and NOTHING like the musical 🤣 I watched a documentary where the author of Wicked Gregory Maguire talked about why he let Stephen Schwartz (the original writer of Wicked for Broadway) have the rights to use his original source material to write his musical… even though he had people knocking on his door back then to try to make it into a movie and knew he would make more money to adapt it to film. It was very interesting. But Maguire had a meeting with Schwartz and fell in love with music he had already written and even gave his blessing to let Schwartz change the plot points of his original story.
@ I enjoyed the book. I’ve always been hesitant to see the musical but didn’t want to be disappointed. Not in the performances, but the changing of the story. I’m sure this movie is far, far worse. I’ve always been interested in reading a couple of his other books, The Life and Times of a Wicked Stepsister & Son of a Witch… I could be getting these titles wrong.
@@annashairtrigger it’s not far worse. I’ve seen both the original Broadway show and I recently watched the movie. The film is almost word for word the same… except they added a little bit to clarify some of the plot points. They also extended the dance and action sequences. Ben Shapiro gives one of the best reviews imo… he’s a theatre purist and a fan of the original and even he liked it.
I had no desire to see this movie, but then I did. I don’t regret it. As entertainment, it was fabulous, the singing fabulous. Now, were there a few characters that could have been edited out because they were on the periphery of the storyline? Absolutely. Watching it with young children? I believe they would find it overstimulating and confusing. I am both conservative and spiritual, and did not notice any subliminal ideologies to the film.
This has nothing really to do with the Judy Garland movie, which was based rather loosely on the original books, written for 9-12yo girls. There are plenty of archetypes here, but they are basically Orwellian, good is bad, war is peace, and green is the new black.
Carl Jung explained many years ago, the common archetypes and humanity and the whole concept of developing and growth through the heroes journey. Of course, all of media and entertainment uses these archetypes in ways to push either free speech or censorship. I would much rather stick with the original Snow White and the seven dwarves than some feminist fantasy about how everybody deserves respect, no matter how unusual cruel or evil they are.
The author of the book this is based on, Gregory Maguire, does this. He tells a variety of stories from the “villain’s” perspective and it is brilliant. Gets us away from a borderline mentality, encourages thinking about different perspectives, and introduces more complex characters and ideas. Loved the book, thought the musical was ok, not sure if I’ll see the movie though.

Bingo!! Nailed it
I watched it. I normally don't watch such things but it was very good in my opinion. The present movie Wicked really has nothing to do with the original Wizard of Oz literature, book and 1939 movie.
It has much to do with the original if you pay close attention, why she is green, how the monkeys came to fly, who the wizard really is, etc. There's alot to tie in.
@@theresastuppiello9589yeah plus in the first scene the characters from the original are on the yellow brick road…

This movie looks boring
That's a great explanation of it
The original was pure satire, political satire. Subtle works better than obvious propaganda.

They are too young to understand the underlying message.
That makes it worse. It goes into the Unconscious mind unchallenged.

Maybe we’ll have to agree to disagree. And that’s okay. 😊
As a fan of the musical, I loved the film. You're absolutely right about deeper truths that push through despite agendas. I try not to listen to ANY polarising and paranoia-inducing voices and always look for nuance and my own personal, critical interpretations of things.
My main concern is how to survive all of these financial and political crisis, especially in light of the US political power scuffle. The government has really called things more difficult for its citizens, and we can't sit back and bear all the consequences of the bad governance.
And there is the proof that people and government is wicked and has never been anything but in this age of mind control .

Not "appear" they truly are OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY
Thanks for shouting out Critical Drinker. His reviews really help decide what I will watch. Wicked wasn't 1/2 bad.
Judy Garland was 16 when they filmed the movie. She wound up on drugs, smoking and drinking during the whole film due to stress and other factors. It caused her to die younger
They deal with the tropes by asserting that WE are "God" and that asserting our own identity is "God's will" on Earth.
Oh wow! So that actress CAN speak louder than a low whisper!? 😂 why are they soooo fucking weird during interviews though?
The trailer has so much in it you feel like you've seen the whole movie already! It's hilarious that in the original book, the author says in the introduction that he's setting out, in effect to write a modern fairytale which merely entertains because in his words "modern education includes morality" so children's stories don't need to teach them anything which is weird because the story itself is clearly an allegory trying to teach you something.

This is one of the better productions to come out of Hollywood. They made some scenes longer than they needed to be but the dancing, music, costumes and singing was great. I had tried to read the book which was very twisted and perverted but the musical is fun and very entertaining.
So you've been mesmerized by evil.
That voice that Ariana Grande is using for this role is annoying
The whole point of all entertainment and music in the west is to manipulate your emotions - to get you excited, scared, disgusted, to brutalise and desensitise you, and triggered. Dopamine addiction. The antidote is extreme sobriety.
I love that self realization you shared when you brought up Jeff n then said "oh, that's jealousy" ❤ and that is how you transmute jealousy into humility.
These two women act pretty strange in the interviews that I have seen. I mean extremely strange.

Or don’t.
THANK YOU RUSSELL 💜🙏💜
I think you should review films that haven't even been made yet.

I enjoyed the stage play with Christen Chenowith and Indina Menzel much more. Much better singing voices for one!

I dislike Hollywood cinema, and strongly dislike the paradigms of narrative
Unfortunately people will still bring their kids
I was disappointed in the movie. Maleficent was better at the " what makes a person evil" trope.

You can't beat the original 1939 movie.
There are plenty of archetypes here, but they are basically Orwellian, good is bad, war is peace, and green is the new black.
aren't archetypes the same as STEREOTYPES??

DEI film no doubt …
Does it check all the boxes?
All actors and actresses in the film can sing, dance, act, emote, and convey a myriad of emotions. Therefore, yes. It ticks all boxes.
What makes it a "dei" film?
Carl Jung explained many years ago, the common archetypes and humanity and the whole concept of developing and growth through the heroes journey. Of course, all of media and entertainment uses these archetypes in ways to push either free speech or censorship. I would much rather stick with the original Snow White and the seven dwarves than some feminist fantasy about how everybody deserves respect, no matter how unusual cruel or evil they are.
Love it 🥰 great insite buddy, depict the truth always
The author of the book this is based on, Gregory Maguire, does this. He tells a variety of stories from the “villain’s” perspective and it is brilliant. Gets us away from a borderline mentality, encourages thinking about different perspectives, and introduces more complex characters and ideas. Loved the book, thought the musical was ok, not sure if I’ll see the movie though.
