  • We are slowing things down today as we begin the second half of this journey. I will introduce some foundational elements for the next wave of this journey, as well as offer practice of a new technique called breath ratio. Breath ratios are breath patterns set to counts. They are a wonderful tool for expanding your awareness and ability to control your breath.
They are also full of transformative potential and wonderful to pull out of your tool kit when you are feeling mentally, physically, or emotionally stressed or lost.
They can be short, or long, but they do require a bit of focus and yes you guessed it…. discipline.
This whole session is low to the ground with a nice therapeutic breath for the arms, shoulders, and wrists. As it is seated, do sit up on your blanket if you have one. If you need to do some or all this practice in a chair or on the edge of a couch, do it.
This session invites you into the classroom. Let me know how today’s practice goes for you in the comment section down below.

I finally found some of that stillness and ease today for the first time. Then she says she found stillness and asks if we did too. I shouted yes then wiggled around excitedly and busted out laughing like “aaaaand there it went”. But it was wonderful while it lasted! I’ll find it again.

I have always marveled at how Adriene could inhale for seemingly impossible periods of time, thinking, "How in the world does she have such super human lungs?" Today I completely surprised myself by realizing that I could also breathe in for a count of 8; I just had to SLOW it down. So cool when something finally clicks!

This practice is exactly what my post-COVID body and lungs needed. So incredibly restorative and healing. My lungs have not been the same since COVID hit me at the end of October, although they continue to improve. I can see now that incorporating more ratios will help, and I'll add the holding at the top, too. To have this series focus on the breath, when so many are struggling to catch theirs, or losing their lives because they cannot, is not lost on me. I FEEL ALIVE after this practice (and after most yoga), and - more importantly, perhaps - I FEEL THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE today to experience the joy of breath. Thank you, Adriene.

Wow, totally not what I expected for a “discipline” practice, but much needed! Now I’m thinking about why I think of hard work and no pain no gain as discipline... it takes just as much discipline to show up and sit with yourself when your emotions are out of whack. Happy Day 16 everybody! We got this! ✨

Wanted to share a favorite poet of mine today to thank Adriene, see y’all tomorrow!
If you find yourself half naked
and barefoot in the frosty grass, hearing,
again, the earth's great, sonorous moan that says
you are the air of the now and gone, that says
all you love will turn to dust,
and will meet you there, do not
raise your fist. Do not raise
your small voice against it. And do not
take cover. Instead, curl your toes
into the grass, watch the cloud
    ascending from your lips. Walk
    through the garden's dormant splendor.
    Say only, thank you.
    Thank you.
    -Ross Gay

Today was the day I was dreading coming to the mat. After a really long day at work, I'd ran out of time for my evening walk, and was feeling frustrated, cold and tired. The last thing I wanted to do was take off my jumpers and socks and summon the energy for anything. This was the perfect session for me so thank you so much. As a freediver, I love breathing practice, (looking forward to the retentions Adriene!), and felt most at peace with the 6/7 and 8/8. With you Adriene, I felt a sublime moment of stillness at the end, I am once again calm on rising from the mat. Many thanks.

I want to share 3 nice things that happened with me during practice:
    1. It's funny but exactly today I decided to light the aromatic candle. It was a good idea because a big part of the practice was dedicated to the breath. And it was soooo yummy.
    2. 06:20 I remembered how I decided to leave my previous job and feel happy that I did it.
    3. In the end of the practice I feel high because of the breath and wrote to my fav person that I love him.

Discipline always makes me think of my favorite Jim Rohn quote, which I try to use as a guidepost in my daily life. "The greatest gift you can give someone is your own personal development. I used to say 'I will take care of you, if you will take care of me.' Now I say, 'I will take care of me for you, if you will take care of you for me." For everyone on this journey, you are not only improving yourself but the lives of everyone you interact with. I'm proud of you.

@@colettepeverelli I learned that: although I enjoy certain aspects of her lessons:
I can't stand mindless rambling or free-associating. aka; existential, off-topic 'ruminations"
I think someone said "quirky" I call it "inane" chatter, taking 2-3 minutes at least to get part of the way into a pose. Another few minutes of yammering to get to the next part of the pose. Then a few more ruminations,, at which point; I said out loud "I don't think the dogs asleep, I think she put him into a coma!" Which made my co-yoga partner start laughing!
We have now found a new channel! Yea!

For anyone who may have struggled with this today: this type of thing is used by musicians as part of a thing called breathing gym. My college marching band would do breathing gym for 15 minutes every single day to build up breath control so we would be able to play calmly and smoothly while marching. It takes a lot of practice and, yes, discipline to really master. So if this was difficult, remember that this is just like a muscle - it must be built up carefully over time. You are far from alone in your struggles, and your breath control will only go up from here!

Of the seven 30-day series since 2015 I am enjoying this one most of all (I love them all, by the way!) because it is quite literally taking most of us relatively amateur yogis into a realm of practice that is not at all about "performance" physically (as most of us in Western society are obsessed with) but is instead guiding us toward an inward journey of integration, letting go, and accepting all that is good, moving us toward healing and wellness. The breath, the whole body, the sensations, the effort and the mind are all aligning. Thank you, Adriene! Please stay profound and quirky! You are awesome!

Guys, so many amazing things happened that I got to share:
    - I was doing the ocean breath from the beginning but it wasn't until the last cycle that I truly FELT it going through my throat
    - usually when I practice breathing the hardest part is exhaling, as I feel like I ran out of air before the counting ends. But this time it was the opposite! I felt like my lungs had no more room for air, and again, it wasn't until the last cycle that I was able to slow down the intake and reach the count of 8
    - when it ended I felt so much love for myself that I put my head in my hands, then hugged myself 😂 lol. Glad I was alone, it was a little weird.
    Happy day 16!!!!

Dear Adriene. I've been practising yoga for 5 years now and I've come across all kinds of yoga teachers. I've been practising yoga regularly with you for the last 3 years. And I want to thank you for being an extraordinary teacher! Every session with you is a new adventure, a new journey, a new discovery..... the smallest of moves, breaths, postures, gets a new meaning with your explanations and examples. Thank you so much for making my life better, in many ways! :-)

Hey Adriene, hey fellow journey mates. I promised myself that I would only comment after getting past half the journey, coz then I'd know that I can and will finish the full 30 days, and it's funny that day 16 is Discipline, so synchronistic 😂😍. I can't explain fully in words how rewarding and fulfilling this journey has been. I had prepared a lot of words in my mind to tell you Adriene but now I'm falling short. I'd just like to thank you, deeply, for everything that you do, for a world you know nothing about. You're such a beautiful beautiful person and I hope you never forget this strength and power that you have. You're saving the world one breath at a time. You're saving my world. I'm eternally grateful.
Everyday I tell myself, if Adriene can wake up every day to do this for people she don't know, I can wake up and do it for myself.
So far my experience is best described as FULFILLING.
I am learning to honour MYSELF.
I am learning to celebrate LIFE.
I am feeling ALIVE, BEAUTIFUL & LOVED.
May the sun always shine upon your life Adriene, and to you too, my fellow journey mates. This world is us. Be aware of it. And as Adriene said on day 14, take up space my darling, you're worthy of it all.
    ALUTA CONTINUA!

I always expect the more physically active practices to be more difficult... but I think this breathing practice was one of the most difficult practices yet - and I've been with Adriene for a few months now! It can be challenging for people with anxiety and racing thoughts to focus on breathing without the mind wandering. This was very calming for me, and I hope that I can learn to better my breathing practice! For those dealing with those things, you've got this - allow yourself to breathe. :)

Wow. This was a really special day. As I was doing these breathing drills, I reflected on the types of breaths I see during my shifts as a nurse on a daily basis. I reflected on images of my patients breathing during tonight’s shift. I listen to lungs at the beginning of my shifts, asking my patients to take a deep breath as I listen to the front and the back, each of the lobes. I give them medicines to help make breathing easier, maybe helping to remove fluid from their lungs so they can breathe better. I help them on and off of BiPAP or CPAP to assist them with taking breaths. I pay attention to the muscles they use as they breathe - is there a great work of breathing or is it natural and effortless? When they sleep, I notice the rhythm: is it regular, or are there pauses? And rarely (thankfully), I am at the bedside as I listen to final breaths. During this COVID pandemic my attention to the breath has only become that much more acute. I stood outside my family member’s door while they stayed in my hospital’s Covid unit battling the disease for an entire month, watching the breath, grimacing as I saw how difficult each one was for them. Watching how tired they got day after day just trying to breathe. On my unit, I watched their oxygen saturation while I went about my shifts, pleading with it to stay up high enough. I sighed with relief when they proned and the oxygen saturation improved. While that family member lived, I lost two others to this terrible disease this year. Unrelated to COVID, I watched another family member, at end of life, have their chest rise and fall with the assist of a ventilator. And I watched as the doctor extubated them and they breathed on their own for a time. I remembered how grievous it was to see my loved ones without their chests rising and falling from the breath when their life had gone from them. And as I breathed along with this video, reflecting on the breaths, my chest and belly expanding, my own lungs filling with air, feeling a sense of calm as I slowed my breath, engaging my parasympathetic nervous system, pumping the brakes on the seemingly endless fight or flight mode that is nursing, a sense of complete gratitude washed over me for the gift of breath. Our breath fuels our life. It’s so simple, so astounding, and as we breathe, we are partaking in life. We are blessed with such a gift. And as I finished the 8 second inhale and 8 second exhale, “exquisite stillness” being the how Adriene chose to describe it, i felt something very similar. A moment of complete calm, a respite from the sympathetic nervous system being constantly revved up. That lovely stillness was a gift from the breath. Thank you, Adriene. Thank you so much for helping me find a moment of reflection, gratitude, and peace. My soul was thirsty for that reprieve. ❤️

Today was the first day of this journey that I had a hard time landing on the mat. A lot of sad feelings today and not liking my body or loving it the way that it deserves to be loved. Therefore the last thing that I wanted to do was to work with it on the mat.
In the end I managed to land on the mat because I love yoga and I love this journey. This was a perfect practice for a day like this, just breathing and loving it. Thank you Adriene

I loved this! The 'ocean breath' is really necessary for me during these ratios. A tip: whenever I can't sleep I use the 4-7-8 ratio (breath in for 4, retain for 7 and breathe out for 8), it works great. It slows me down and I get immediately into a sort of sleep-mode.

Just realized I could bresthe in and breathe out slooowly to sort of get through the ratios. I wonder how this slow breathing technique can translate off the mat. With the pressure of always living life fast paced - like gogogo move hustle etc - learning to pace one's breathing is quite a gem ❤ I keep learning - like perhaps I'm not breathing but merely holding my breath in, and that even an exhale can be enjoyed and savored

  • @Just_me_214

So I have been beating myself up a little because I am so many days behind. "I should be doing yoga everyday." "Why can't I make it to the mat everyday." But yesterday my grandfather passed away, and today's breathing exercises really helped me calm and relax and feel at peace. I'm not saying it was meant to be, but I am reminding myself to be kinder to myself. Especially cause it works out better than planned sometimes. xoxo
