I think comedians are the most courageous people ever. They are often, if the best imo, so incredibly sensitive and compassionate. And shyness I have no doubt most of them have. I don't understand how these beautiful people get up there simply to help entertain others and possibly get them to laugh. The hours are shit, it's uncertain, and you have to be yourself very much as a comedian, even if it might just be a persona. He was so beautiful. Are you sure, you didn't hear that about a different comedian? While it's true, that many comedians are rather tragic insecure people, from all I ever heard, Rik was the exception to the rule. Happy childhood, could work with the people he got along with, great creative liberty, wholesome family life ... I'd say aside from his accident that almost killed him in 1998, there were no demons haunting him. He just learned very early on to protect himself and his privacy from nosy journalists. He could be very candid in interviews at times, but he didn't chose this too often.

I was at Kings with Rik in 73/4. He was a great friend to me when I first came back to England. He was good enough to invite me to stay at his home when I left Kings, as I was in a very dark place at the time.
Believe me, he wasn't shy at school. He was destined for stardom even at 16....
@onmy computer2020gal he was a really nice guy....and dangerously off-the-wall with his humour. I still have the tickets to his first performance of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern at Kings....25p!
Jfc, from the little I've seen of Wogan (in a kiwi) he's no bloody Parkinson is he. I find him extremely grating.
Still saddens me to be reminded that guys who were part of our growing up have passed on. Made me laugh in my 30's 40's and 50's now he's gone. Wherever you are Rick have fun and keep on being you. 👍
Kudos to you for keeping the VHS tape for all those years....... Rik was one of the best and is still sorely missed
This dude has been making me laugh for years, like many people I have watched the Young one's, bottom The new statesman and "the movie" so many times, and I will continue to do this until the end of my time!! RIP "wrick" one of the best!
Oh Rik. When I met you, I saw that soul that's exuding now. I was honoured. Love you Rik xxx
The freaking energy is unbelievable!!!
Good interview ...Terry Wogan enabled him to show how intelligent and thoughtful he was. I guess i must have seen it at the time.
26 - wow. I was 11 when The Young Ones first aired. I am approaching 50 and to think Rik was half my age when he did this. Genius.
Thanks so much for sharing this mate. 26 year old Rik. I don't know what my life would've been like without Rik and Ade.
We laugh as if to say we're not the sort of people who slip on banana skins. ♥
That cheered me up and warmed the heart. Two greatly missed gods of entertainment.
Thanks Chris, i have the Young Ones book, signed by Rik Mayall, a true treasure. and I would watch both Bad News with my best friend at least twice a week for years. Rik was gold and a revolutionary comedic blessing. Cheers
Brilliant!! I had the very great pleasure of meeting Rik, Adrian and Keith Allen @ the Comedy Store in London back in the glorious days of The Comic Strip Presents. Many thanks for sharing this gem.
RIP Rik. Mayall. A totally original comic. You made me laugh so much in the early 80's.
My word. He really was a beautiful man. Mad as a box of frogs, obviously!
Wogan and Rik Mayall two guys I'll miss. A bygone era
Well done Chris Shields, you're a man who knows how to store his VHS :) RIP Rik.
Interesting to see him as a young man - as himself during the Young Ones days. Hadn't seen this before - he was really nice in this.
Best one line poem ever!
Thanks for the laughs Rik. Thanks for the interviews Terry! Give our love to all there x
Rik Mayall 7 March 1958 - 9 June 2014. Terry Wogan 3 August 1938 - 31 January 2016.
I think I spent half my life as a kid in the 80's watching episodes of the Young Ones on VHS. My favourite show ever.
Absolutely.👍
5 year old me watching bottom and barely able to breathe due to laughing so much while my mother was shouting "turn that filth off"
@@gkm2928 great days . Remember that episode where they all have the flu. Vivian nails a bin liner on to neil to stop him from sneezing everywhere 🤣🤣🤣.
RIP Rik. Everyone should watch his film 'One by One' and wake up.
The Fruitcake Munchers Club wasn’t princess Ann with a strap on
I watched one by one yesterday 👍 never knew it existed till the other day .
@The Fruitcake Munchers Club 🙄
I will look it up. Thanks!

What a lovely, humble, naturally funny and supremely talented guy. We love you Rik, always & forever RIP absolute legend 😓🖤
Enjoyed both performances.
Fantastic, funny and poignant. I've never seen such an early interview with him, thanks for posting.
Such a gentle, thoughtful and kind man. He will be missed
The characters inside him are so drastic and filled in. Then suddenly you see the person inside him and in a way, that is the bigger shock. what an amazing bloke he was.
I love Nick and his poems. I fell for Rik in DropDead Fred, I've never seen anything from him before, he was such an organic, talented actor, such an inspiration! I was truly shocked when I find out that he passes, like 8 months after. I felt so guilty!
I think this is the most honest/straight interview with Rick Mayall I've ever seen. It cuts through the usual ego and pretence of later interviews.
We were robbed of this amazing man. He made me laugh throughout my childhood. Gutted when he left us, gutted. RIP People's Poet.
A pair of national treasures, greatly missed.
A Fucking Legend! R.I.P. Rik Mayall!!!!!Love you Dude!
Thanks for the upload...I started watching tapes of the young ones when I was Three, Laugh just as much now I'm 41..lol.
I miss him enormously. The world just isn't the same with him.
also thank you SOO much for preserving this ...no ... really ... i LOVE this
thank you again
Thanks so much for posting .. A real treat to see what direction he was heading in with the excellent questions from Wogan.. Later interviews he did with Ade were too much fun and no real detail.. ok they were fun ..LOL
People who knew Rik personally said he was a very tortured soul. He seems that way just seeing how he conducts himself in the interview. I'm not surprised at that you can't be that brilliant and not be in pain mentally.
Where did you hear that from,?! Id heard he was a very friendly and happy guy?!
@@obiwanshinobi5098 ; Yes, I always had the impression that Rik was a very happy, balanced kind of guy. But whatever, he was responsible for some of the best comedy and characters ever ! 👍☀️☮️
Aw really? I didn't know that.
@@acsaudiodramasWell put, exactly what I heard & read. There were times after becoming famous at a young age / 22/ when he struggled to keep his private life & not governed too much by bosses/ producers/ TV, but he learnt quite well how to handle this & I think he was happy in his life with family, friends & neverending work - the quadbike thing & consequences was the one big obstacle of course.
A master of his craft! There's no comedy left like this any more.
Immensely talented man. Greatly missed but not forgotten.
BRILLIANTLY BRILLIANT!!
Thank-you for the laughs.
RIP-RIK....
Sean Cyco “Prick is a wonker, signed the rest of the class”
Absolutely brilliant. A true entertainer
I applaud you sir, great archiving, very forward thinking
Mind blowing show. Thank you for sharing
Terry Wogan, Rik and the golden age of TV. I canceled my licence now.
Thanks Chris. Amazing I've only just seen this.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! Blessings ever from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
A genuinely lovely man, Rik Mayall
Only a British audience?
We LOVED IT in Australia!!!
My dad claimed to loathe The Young Ones for weeks... then Alexi Sayle did the Mussolini ‘I just make stupid noises’ song after hassling Neil for wanting to be in the Special Branch.
At the end of the song I looked at Dad and he had tears in his eyes, genuine tears of joy/hilarity... one of the best, true bonding moments we ever shared.
Geniuses, all of them.
Mrs Ghandi yop yop!
Great fun 😂😂😂
Rik Mayall a true comedy legend nuff said.
Just love him even more now. This man made my whole family laugh so hard. All the young ones in fact.
Really interesting interview, thanks for posting
I was just watching The Comic Strip.
‘A Fistful of Travellers Cheques’
Underrated GENIUS.
[the two gunslingers stare at each other]
"What football team do you support?"
"Watford."
"Watford?!? They can't play to save their lives!"
"I know..."
"Well I think they can play. They just need a new manager. Anyway, you're going to DIE!!!!"
[BANG! BANG! BANG!]
