And this is 100% because of the nature of FF as a series, where each mainline entry being its own standalone “series” causes people to latch unto a favorite FF title to flex over others for some weird…internal media/personality validation issues.
Like man…you can like more than a single FF. It’s not a sin. Most FFs have great things about them, like I love FF6, FF7, FF9, and now FF16 and still find things to like about every main entry in some fashion. People craving for the “perfect” final fantasy are going to be hungry forever.

I actually loved FF15 but felt no type of way to 16. It was okay. I do acknowledge that we have not had a GOOD mainline FF launch since 12 and even that was a forgettable title. I feel like the series doesn't know its own identity anymore. I'm happy FF14 got the glowup it deserves but FF15 was incomplete and FF16 had underwhelming character development and the story suffered for it which was the opposite of FF15 - great characters, bad story.
I really wanted FF16 to do well. I even got the $400 collectors edition. I platinumed the game. It had so much more potential but I felt like I never got to know the characters or the world well enough outside of "bearers are tortured". I think if they included 2-3 hours of young Clive becoming branded and showing his enslavement and added better character animations for sidequests, we would have a better game. The fixes are actually pretty simple.

The ending itself is rather perfect. Adn well, gameplay wise... it cannot be like the rest of this game.

Sleeping Dogs, 2.5 million - Failure

@@forsetigodofjusticeexcelle7506From what I’ve read, there are things that need to be taken into account. I can’t speak for Sleeping Dogs, but I can speak for Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider sold ~4.2mil in 4 weeks, no? On a huge install base (125mil+ I think, can’t say for sure but it’s what I’ve read) due to it being multiplatform, while FFXVI sells 3 million in a week on one platform with an install base of something around what? Rounded up, 40 million? That’s why Tomb Raider is a failure compared to FFXVI, considering the sheer difference in install base. Also, there were probably different expectations for these games. Sleeping Dogs and Tomb Raider probably failed to meet SE’s expectations while FFXVI likely reached or exceeded their initial expectations. That’s just my insight, though.

@@nasaki4348 Yeah, the install potential based purely off total consoles sold plays a roll, but Square putting so much weight on that figure alone isn't giving them accurate expectations.
They are seeing things like "This game should sell to at least 20% of all people who own the machines to play it"
This means PC + both console releases, like Tomb Raider will always have idiotic expectations (I think they wanted 20 million for Tomb Raider? don't quote me on that :P)
They don't take into account many people own both consoles and I would put a safe bet on most people own either a PS5/Switch/Xbox on top of a PC.
Very few people buy the same game on 3 platforms just to see differences, so it makes no sense for them to measure off the total install base for multi platform releases.
This FF16 being above average for total install base is due to PS5 being hard to get for years, but it's now easy to get them, so lots of people bought a PS5 for the first time just to play FF16.

Xbox won't get FF16 because Sony bankrolled the game. I didn't expect PS to get Bayonetta 3 because I knew Nintendo paid for that game's development. It's a pretty common practice in video games and it has been around for decades.
The game just plain couldn't run on a PS4. Period. It has been 3 years since PS5 launched and the PS4 is 10 years old. People have to understand that tech moves on.
For what you get PS5 isn't overpriced and has never been. I read a recent article where they built a PC with the closest specs they could get to a PS5. They still couldn't match the price point. It is closer to what it was last year, but PS5 is still a great bang for your buck.

I get why some fans want the game to fail. It's dramatically more focused on story and fast paced action, but these fans seem to have a certain degree of delusion, because final fantasy 7 remake and 15, were already focusing on high paced action during their times. After final fantasy 10, the combat became action focused, and story has always been a focus. Not to forget that final fantasy has been fairly linear since the 10nth one. If you give final fantasy 16 a chance, it's not flawless, but it has some of the best storytelling and characters in the series by the time you reach the mid way point. I mean, the battles grow increasingly epic and majestic, and themes like incest, and sex, blood and gore, are a mind-blowing introduction to final fantasy. Let's just say that final fantasy 16 is never going to make it into kingdom hearts 4. It's way too M rated for kingdom hearts.

Each individual piece is serviceable, but nothing works well together. The lack of variety of ANY kind is a huge blemish too. They didnt develop enough gameplay mechanics in my opinion. The overall gameplay loop isnt there. Even a devil may cry game has some hidden items in the stages and you have to use some of your abilities to find them. In devil may cry 3 for example you even have to replay stages youve completed with newer abilities in order to find hidden stages or upgrades. Its not much but at least it's something to keep you on the lookout while figuring out where to go.

I don't think it was the right design choice in the end. Even just more interaction and customization with Torgal might have been enough with a few more complex systems on top, because then that would have trickled down into the itemization and perhaps some puzzle solving like in ff10, where torgal could help clive get through the world.

To be fair, SE were supposed to release the 1 month sales figures 2 weeks ago and have been stalling. They've been releasing no actual sales data, at all, while continuing to claim it's selling amazingly well.
They also lied about how many PS5's were out at the time of the game's launch by using PS5 sales figures from 3 months prior to the game's release. There were close to 41 million PS5's sold at launch. (That 38.5 figure was from March.)
I, in full honestly, believe their hype news regarding sales, while refusing to release the 1 month sales figures, is a marketing scheme. Trying to keep people in the dark about how poorly it's doing and make them believe it's selling really well, in order to keep people intrigued about it.
I've been hearing tons (and I mean tons) of rumors from people inside the industry that it still hasn't reached 4 million copies sold yet. I've heard this from dozens of people who are typically always right about insider gaming stuff.
If this is indeed the case then it sold worse than FF7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 15 when adjusted for Playstation consoles sold at the time of each game's launch. The only one that launched on xbox also was 15, and only 15% of sales for that game were on xbox so all those xbox consoles out at the time don't hold anywhere near as much weight in regards to sales. You need to compare the sales figures for each game's Playstation release because that's where the existing FF community resides. There's simply not much of a fanbase, at all, on xbox for FF. If you look at PS4 sales (only) for FF15, it absolutely decimated 16 by nearly twice as many copies sold after week 1.
And the fact that everyone is disingenuously comparing FF15's day 1 sales to FF16's week 1 sales should tell you something right there. FF15 was well over 6M at the end of week 1 (it surpassed 5M on day 1 due to pre-orders), and FF16 was at 3.1M at the end of day 7 (it broke the 3M mark on day 6). PS4 sales alone for FF15 were at 5M at the end of week 1 with 81% of sales for that week being on PS4 (and that percentage increased over time).

I wouldn't be calling FF10 or FF7 failures, even the less critically acclaimed games such as 12 and 13 sold like gangbusters, with the exception of the disaster that was 14 1.0, the games do well and make SE a LOT of money. 16's sales dropping 91% after the first week isn't some disaster it's predictable behavior after the primary buying rush of a game releasing, and something each and every one of it's myriad siblings have done.

I hope as we see the stagger system and the action gameplay we build upon ff7r system ff13 and ff15 as we go forward.

It is amazing how much people wanna hate bc either they like drama or bc they think somehow this will somehow help the franchise by showing SE they went the wrong direction w this game. I wish people would just either play it or not without actively looking for ways/reasons for it to fail. So much time and love was clearly put into this game with a respect for the franchise and fan base while trying to push the boundaries of what FF can be.

So you want millions of fans to stop telling a game developer what kind of game they want to buy? All of us sitting here playing games like Atelier Ryza and Legend of heroes because they filled the gap Final Fantasy left behind. Square has always made whatever they felt like making, but there will come a time when a significant slice of the fanbase is no longer happy to get final fantasy 1-6 sympathy remasters thrown at them every 5 years. I think square is underestimating how many disgruntled fans buy modern final fantasy games out of loyalty alone, once that shit runs out they will be left to survive on whatever new fans they have cultivated.

@@coolguy48457there is a reason the series hasn't been turn based in over 20 years. You said millions wants tune based!? You are delusional, they know turn based games don't sell millions of copies for them to be consider a franchise in it. The only exception to this rule is persona 5 and that game rerealaesed like 11 times with different editions to get to that point. There is a reason why this been going on 20 years and it will go on simply because the % who prefer turn based is so small compare to what they can gain from existing and news fans. You don't want to hear this but as a company they will sacrifice that small % for the overall bigger % they get from new styles and sadly whether you want it or not they will keep sacrificing those smaller audiences to gain bigger audiences and it's working for them with F7R and this one and most likely with F7R2.

@@user-pv5tp7zk4s do your research, final fantasy was selling nearly 10 million units as a turn based game...they actually started messing with the genre at thier peak...and these action variants that are supposed to market to a larger audience somehow cant match the sales of the past...which is ironic given the old games were all on 1 console and 13 and 15 were multiplatform. You dont underatand how many people still buy this game despite not caring for the direction, probably half of all sales are old fans that prefer the older games but still think the new ones are decent enough to buy...that might not always be the case. This isnt even a turn based convorsation, its more about the lack of meaningful RPG elements in a game calling itself an RPG...i loves the Tales of series...very much an action RPG...but it respects my time...offers meaningful world exploration and playstyle diversity through its cast of party members.. ff16 may as well just be a generic character action game...the rpg mechanics were an afterthought...literally a NES era equipment system with the most generic possible bonuses that offer zero player utility...i mean really...flat stat bonuses potion boost...and very small cooldown reduction and damage increase to skills...its a joke. When this game feels like a okay RPG its already too late...im not waiting til NG+ to master skills and finally play how I want....thats piss poor game design to balance around a second playthrough.

I basically only play JRPG and yes sadly I admit most those games that I just mentioned haven't sold even 500,000 copies and sadly this companies are going by revenue and engagement nowadays that's why you got ffxvi because it has the potential of title like GOW to sold millions and to keep selling because of the wider audience it can reach. I think the best combat for the series if they want to keep a style of turn based is what f7r did with their combat. But to judge it for what it isn't, rather than what it is (a straight up cinematic character action title - something Yoshi-P has alluded to, years before launch), is frankly, weird. It's like if FF17 turned out to be a racing game or FPS, then judging it as a turn based RPG, of course you're not gonna enjoy it.
Having finished FF16, the worst part of it is it's wwaaayyy too easy (even with no auto dodge, no auto attack talismans). And I'm no pro or anything, just some rando. And kinda unrealistic to expect players to finished the game once to get to the "REAL" game as intended (Final Fantasy mode aka Hard mode).

Bring back building a world, culture, tons of race with their own language. Establish a good rpg with lively town and good side quest. Bring back classic Nobuo track and enough of the rock and souls like opera.

Well you can't really cry when you take everything that Final Fantasy is away to appease the mass market audience (westerners who generally don't play JRPGs). Everything from the tone, to the soundtrack to the setting, to the influences (basically Game of Thrones with magic), to complete lack of a party system.... they have no room to complain that sales were lower than expected.
Ever since XIII, that would not have been nearly has bad had it not taken two more games to fix the floundering plot, and ESPECIALLY with Final Fantasy Boy Band Adventures, the franchise feels like its been in decline. They should go back and look at 12. That was PEAK Final Fantasy.
This is not to say that I think Final Fantasy should fail, on the contrary, for what it is (Game of Thrones with a magic system) it deserves the success it gets. However it could have done so much better if it had actually been Final Fantasy instead. Mature story telling? No. Using cursing and pornographic content does not make a story "mature". To paraphrase a writing professor of mine: "all that does is show ones immaturity as a writer". This wasn't Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, this was medieval fantasy. You want mature storytelling? You want a command of prose bordering on the sublime? Read Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.
Either way, thank god Granblue Fantasy Relink looks like its finally ready to deliver this winter. I really need a good JRPG right about now.

The combat lacks strategy, just spam eikons skills to stagger the enemy, why doesn't switching eikons change your weapons elemental attacks, why aren't enemies weak to certain elements. I loved the main story but the side content and lack of things to do other than fight hurt the games longevity.
