  • From psychology to physics, and from insurance to weather forecasting, everything is “chancy”. Although chance made everything uncertain and destroyed the idea of a perfectly predictable world, the game changed when mathematicians invented probability theory about 200 years ago.
In this lecture Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy will give a broad sweep of the main ideas behind probability theory and statistics. The distance learning modules he has created (10 English, 10 Urdu) have been uploaded on The Black Hole's website:

Excellent. Pakistan should bring in a technocrat govt and make Dr. Hoodbhoy its head and let him choose his team. I have always believed that the biggest issue with Pak is the lack of scientific temper which is inversely proportional to blind faith.

A lies 4 out of 5 times. A rolls a die and claims it is a 6. What is the probability it was actually a six? The reason I ask this question is that, there was quite disagreement on this answer when this question was posted on Quora. Some very able people said that, the answer is 4/5. On the other hand, other very able people said that it depends on how A chooses to lie. For instance, one way to lie is to say it is a six or not a six. The other way to lie is to say any of the remaining numbers instead of the chosen number. Various assumptions therefore will lead to different answers. There were PHDs in Statistics, Mathematics from universities like UPENN, Stanford discussing the answer. There was no definite conclusion, although the consensus seemed to be that the answer depends on how A chooses to lie. What does Doctor Hoodbhoy have to say regarding this question? It is a tricky question, not a difficult one.

Chance indeed plays a great role in life. For example, if per chance, I had been born Muslim, my life would have been doomed. Thankfully, I was not 😅

What a shame, unfortunate that this person is born in pakistan. The country is unfortunate to have such persons, had he been a maulana he would have got the recognition he deserves
