OMG. I hadn't watched this video yet, because I haven't done big detailed wings yet...but one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE tutorials!! The results=SO GOOD!! And I actually learned a few things and got a couple tips UNRELATED to wings, lol!! Definitely going to pick up that Vallejo Black Wash that dries much later, haven't started my "white" unicorn yet, but I think that will come in very handy. And this video sold me on getting an airbrush after all...Black Friday is around the corner, lol. THANKS VINCE!!😄😍👍👍
Glacier blue is my favorite paint (only have like 40). Its lovely as is and serves as a great mixer too. Big thanks for the vid. Gives me hope for my post Adepticon Celestial Phoenix Hurricanum project! Excited to see the results from following this one.
Thanks Vince, 2 questions, do you do the under side exactly the same? And also would you attach the wings to the body before painting it? Does it make a difference if its a metal mini?
Yes, did the underside exactly the same. I attach the wings if I can still easily access them (i.e. they are open and my brush won't be limited). Doesn't really make a difference if it's metal. :)
Hum.. I'm getting a master on feather painting this week. A really great tutorial (and the feathers have an awesome look). And now let me do the grouchy not-so-old man's comment: "Those youngsters that never had seen a chicken out of a plastic bag, or have never had to pluck a small game piece..." The word that you were looking for is the shaft of the feather(Or at least is what I've found when I've done the research after seeing the Victor's video ;) )
Ahh, good to know. Anatomy is about as far from my area of expertise as one could get. Yes, Victor and I are both working on big minis with big wings, so I guess it's just Feather Week ;)
I really couldn't tell you the paints at this point (too many years ago), but, I can say the premise was to use a blue/purple for the low tones and then move into a red/purple and finally into a magenta/pink.
Great video. I just did the tutorial on how I am doing the wings for Magnus. And I had the same problem as you I did not know the word for this part of the feather. Now I know is called shaft thanks to a viewer. I also realized in some points how different is your style compared to mine.
I watched your vid as well and it's funny that we are both on separate giant models with massive wings. I noticed that we have different techniques, but looking at your wings, I think it's two separate roads to the same great end.
I wouldn't do the whole P3 line as I don't really use them (though I use the inks). P3 vs. Vallejo are both very similar. highly pigment rich and dense and strong tint, good for mixing into colors or using on their own. Same for Scale 75 except they are also glossy when they dry, so you have to be careful. The Inktense Wood is flat out amazing though. The Warcolours has a wider range of colors, but are weaker as far as coverage, they are more transparent. Great for mixing and thinning but preserving color, great for airbrushing, thin on their own with a brush. Hope that helps.
very cool...this will be useful for my kingdom death phoenix, incredible detail. Vince i wonder if i could ask your advice on varnishing with an airbrush , can i just thin out vallejo or is there anything i need to watch out for ? :) trying to save money on rattle cans
Hmm, I recently decided to roll up a Tzeentch army and UA-cam casually suggested this and I have a Lord of Change sitting in the box on the shelf. Exactly as planned?
Hey Vince, you critiqued my LoC on the last PMP roundup - thanks so much for the feedback! Because I'm completely insane, I'm thinking of painting Kairos Fateweaver later in the year but using purples, magentas, pinks, reds and into orange for the colour scheme. For this approach would a brown to off-white value sketch beneath be better, or does the fact that you've used very little black mean that what you've done in this video would work for that colour palette?
Hey Vince, with the kharadron overlords coming out with all their flying stuff, could those of us that hate the very conspicuous flying stand hope for a tutorial on ways to hide it /alternative methods to convey flight?
Depends. If I am doing fine detail work, generally Winsor & Newton Series 7 of varying sizes as appropriate. For other jobs (base coating, dry brushing, washing) I use either old broken down W&N brushes or other cheaper brushes from hobby shops etc.
When you get to it. Would love to see an updated wings vid...small and big ect...thanks for all you do vince
It’s on the list.
I have been watching this video a ton. I'm getting ready to do my own LoC, but I'm planning to do the feathers in black like a raven.
Great video with tons of great tips there. Looking forward to taking a certain phoenix to the next level, so thank you Sir.
Yep, the phoenix is perfect for something like this because they have those broad, flat feathers and wonderful level segmentation :)
this makes me want to get an airbrush... and thanks, now memories of the Lite Brite commercials from my youth are stuck in my head...
You're welcome on both counts. :)

"Both are standing out...but....this one's more."
The fast cadence at the end made that quite funny
The LoC is finding it's way, he will probably be post-adepticon sadly as we are going try hard on him. :)
he's worth a good hard try.
will be a nice centerpiece to gaze in awe at. which we'll need to get us out of our post Adepticon endorphin dump stupor
Can you believe I've never seen this older episode!?

Hi Vince. Just decided to start my lord of change and I love your version. Can I ask what was your purple scheme you used for the body?
I really couldn't tell you the paints at this point (too many years ago), but, I can say the premise was to use a blue/purple for the low tones and then move into a red/purple and finally into a magenta/pink.
@@VinceVenturella that's enough for me. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Love your work.
Feth. That is the individual name of a strand of feather.
It’s only logical.
Awesome, I love learning stuff like this. :)

Awesome stuff Vince
Thank you sir, much appreciated.
How do you feel about P3 inks vs Vallejo, Warcolours, or Scale75 inks?
Any chance for a product review for the P3 line?
I wouldn't do the whole P3 line as I don't really use them (though I use the inks). What PSI are you using? I'm constantly blowing my paint out of place when I try to use extra thin paints like this.
15-18 PSI and I am only slightly depressing the trigger as well.
You're a great master Vince thank you for your time
I don't think I deserve that title by a long shot, but I am very glad it was helpful :)
Hmm, I recently decided to roll up a Tzeentch army and UA-cam casually suggested this and I have a Lord of Change sitting in the box on the shelf. Exactly as planned?
All according to plan. :)
wow your timing with these things is perfect lol awesome job buddy
Glad to help as always sir.

I would actually say that a dark hull red would be a great color to undershade all of that with, should shadow all of that excellently.
Hey Vince, with the kharadron overlords coming out with all their flying stuff, could those of us that hate the very conspicuous flying stand hope for a tutorial on ways to hide it /alternative methods to convey flight?
What kind or brand of brushes do you use? Thanks

Thanks!!! Great video
Great stuff! I love these videos.
Thank you sir, much appreciated.
Thank you
Welcome!
Great tutorial, thanks.
Thank you sir, much appreciated.
feather plume?
Turns out it's called the shaft, which is you know, way funnier... ;)
Great guide. But I would probably make the wings blend with a purple color.
Thanks, glad to help, and yes, there are certainly some other color choices that you could make which would be perfectly valid and look good.
