    I am very happy I bought this camera. It performs really well and it is a perfect size. I also got an extra mount that lets you attach the Sony cam to go pro mounts and a $15 Sony gift voucher in the box. I don't know why they were in there but I'm very happy they did. Over all it is a great camera, and if you are looking at getting one you should. Also thanks for your videos, you helped me make my decision on getting this cam.

    Hi MarkHawkCam, thanks to your comprehensive reviews and side-by-side comparisons, I was able to make an informative decision and choose the AS200 over the Hero4 Silver (or any other camera). A year on and my AS200 is still going strong. My friends are still impressed by the quality and vivid colours of my footage and stills. They are taking a liking to the fisheye effect that others perceive as a disadvantage compared to GoPros.
    I remember reading the comments below and seeing the confusion with SD card speeds/types in relation to Sony's XAVCS format. To be honest, Sony could have a done a much better job to help users with this topic.
    Thanks again mate and keep up the great work!

    Just got two of these camera's but the last video camera I owned was 15 years ago so I have a pretty steep learning curve. Primary use for these will be to record my daughters softball and volleyball games and then my daughters will use for bike riding/beach days. For the sports - what settings are most appropriate for recording the following scenarios? Recording one side of a volleyball court; Recording an individual player (volleyball or softball player); recording a wider angle softball game - think recording infield/batter during a game. Thanks in advance for any guidance! Also, if you have any suggestions on tutorials similar to this one, books or stores that offer training that would be great.

      +Business and Productivity I suggest enabling XAVC-S mode (enables the best quality possible) at 1080 60fps for side line recording. If you find the perspective to wide, enable steady shot. Most of your other default settings should be fine. Color set to vivid and scene set to normal. If the camera won't let you enable XAVC-S mode, it's because you might not have the proper micro-sd card for the job. For a list of suggestions, check this link under this video.

    Good review MarkHawk I wanted to mention for others that the GPS function does not require the remote as the camera has the GPS module and settings for it on board.

    Thanks for anther great video... despite mistakes about GB/Gbits for the SD card, and needing the wristband for GPS! I have annotations turned off because 99% of the time they are annoying, so didn't see any corrections.

    Your videos are interesting and informative, thanks.
    Can the LOOP function on the HDR AS200V be disabled? I am never going to use LOOP and it's in my way. When I want to POWER OFF I have to pass through LOOP first, so two clicks to POWER OFF rather than just one click as on the HDR AS100V.
    If I can't disable LOOP this 200v is going back to Mr & Mrs Sony ASAP!
    Thank you for your time.

    Hello Mark. Nice video overall. However, the minimum writing speed U1 and U3 represent Mega Bytes , and not Mega Bits. The camera supports maximum 50 Mega Bits a second, so you don't need that big of a writing speed micro sd card as you mention. So it is not "waaay below what we need" .

    The GPS-transmitter is not located in the remote controle but in the camera itself. This means you DO NOT need the remote controle to get GPS-tracking - I have just been on the phone with Sony Customer Suppoert.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      Thanks, a few people pointed this out. Turns out this was only true with the AZ1 model. I added an annotation to the video but maybe it didn't save. Thanks for following up.

    • @k42p3r
      @k42p3r 9 років тому

      Besides that it's a very nice video :-)
      Have you tried the official "PlayMemories Mobile"-app from Sony? It allows you to set up the camera with your smartphone instead of using the remote-controle.
      I have falled in love with the AS200 but I don't think I want to bring the remote controle every time I go for a ride :-)

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      Yeah, I use the App every time I go out there with one of these cameras. It's just faster to go through play memories app to swap settings that go 1 by 1 through the menus on the camera. The remote buttons are built tough to push so you don't accidently him during your adventure but that also makes them a pain to push and navigate the menus with. I also find the screen too dim during the day to use so again, having your phone is a much better experience minus adding the risk of accidentally dropping it.

    • @k42p3r
      @k42p3r 9 років тому

      MarkHawkCam Thank you very much for the quick reply. I think I'll buy the camera without the remote controle and save myself $150 :-)

    @Dominic F Can't respond to your comment directly because of your privacy settings. My knowledge on Micro SD card speeds could have been better here. At the time I recorded this, most SD card limitations on Action Camera performance weren't quite as apparent. The Sony line literally just will shut you out of using XAVC-S mode if you don't meet their requirements. Most areas you mentioned are easy to meet and appreciate the write up of info. The only thing I wanted to point out is that using a SDHC 64gb will lock you out of using XAVC-S mode even if you meet the other specs. Also users here using SDXC formatted cards from Samsung Evo have run into issues with cards writing at 40-45Mb speeds even though according to what I understand, should meet minimum specs. I've reached out to Sony in the past but never got a response to a lot of these specific questions. Anyway thanks for the response and sorry for the confusion.

    • @FleNikc
      @FleNikc 9 років тому

      MarkHawkCam Yeah it seems to be a common thing for devices to reject cards at a whim :)
      For example I heard that SanDisk Ultra can be problematic for DSLR Video, although it's a pretty fast card.
      Theoretically any Class 10 with at least 64 GB should do for XAVCS, but there's no guarantee.

    Wrong angle is for both video and photo. Of course if you turn on steady shoot it will force the video angle to 120

      XSpt I'm a little confused, can you re-clarify this?

    • @XSpt1
      @XSpt1 9 років тому +2

      That setup option to select angle 120 or 170 goes for both video and photo.
      However if you selected the mode "Steady Shoot" the angle will be automatically set to 120. If you want to record in 170 angle you cant have steady shot on

  • @wklatt

    Hey, Mark, you mention that the AS200 needs the LVR2 to record GPS. Don't believe that is true. The AS200 has GPS in the camera just like the AS100. I think you were thinking of the AZ1 which does indeed need the LVR2V (different than the LVR2) to record the GPS.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому +1

      Ahhh... this would explain why this remote doesn't have the GPS on it... Okay... Thank you, I'll add an annotation to the video in a little bit.
      (The dots are because I've been wanted to the GPS enabled LVR2. So I ordered the AS200VR version so I'd finally have one, and now I still don't. :p Thanks again)

    • @wklatt
      @wklatt 9 років тому +2

      MarkHawkCam
      You need the AZ1 with the LVR2V for that (on sale now), and it works with all the action cams incl the X1000V and the AS200. I know,... because I have one.
      Anyway, doing a good job there, Mark. You must feel like a kid opening his new Xmas presents,... haha.

    We just got this camera and when i tried recording using my iphone, i have no audio. How is that possible?

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      Juan Dela Cruz If you are set to MP4 mode and are using a high frame rate, it might not record audio. You need to switch it to XAVC-S mode and enable high frame rates there. You might need a better micro SD card for XAVC-S mode, which I have made some suggestions to in the more information section. There are users here to who have had luck with cheaper cards as well.

      Hopefully this weekend. I wanted to go back and film something to see how Steady Shot was really holding up and test some high frame rate footage. Don't like posting videos and seeing comments saying I got some aspect wrong. So just wanted to double check some parts of Part 2.
      Also been working on prepping a bunch of edits for this weekend for comparisons to the X1000V, Hero4 Silver, and Black. Plan on filming some comparisons with the AS100 and AZ1 this weekend too.

      +fitzscape You do not. It should be connected to the XML data on the files with the same name as the video. You need Action Cam to sync it up. I also recommend updating the camera if you never had. Some people had issues with the GPS data when the camera first launched.

    On the box it reads as 95MB/s (MegaBytes per second ) yet you say Megabits (Mb/s)
    Am i hearing correct or it actually reads Megabits?
    50mbps = 6.25 mBps (MB/s) The cameras Max value
    Therefore at speeds as 30MB/s this card is consindered an overkill?
    A Micro SDHC class 10 can do te work as well. Reffering to Speeds alone.
    If im wrong please do correct/explain.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому +1

      ACEGR1 You are not completely wrong. My Micro SD card speed knowledge here was off. However some viewers pointed this out to me and I added other cards in the "More Information" section below the video that they had success with. The one area I know you need is an XC formatted card. The camera wont allow you to use the higher bit rate modes like XAVC-S without one. Unfortunately those are locked to 64gb cards for the most part. But they are much more affordable and the card I suggested has come down about 30 bucks too. I would look into the Lexar x633 as they have been the most reliable and useful ones for me so far.

      As long as the micro is an XC formatted card you should be fine. (most newer 64gb card and bigger hard but you want to avoid HC formats.) It just allows the camera to film at a higher bit rate = better quality and some additonal modes. I use a combination of first party and 3rd party batteries.

    I just bought an AS200V and the GPS is actually built into the camera, not the wrist remote as you say in your video. I didn't buy the remote but I can 100% track my route, so maybe add an annotation to correct that so people don't go wasting £40 on a remote you'll never use (because your phone can do it all). GPS is something GoPro's don't do yet, and the built-in SteadyShot and more streamlined design for less-dorky helmet mounting gives it a big edge over GoPro (and from what I've seen, image quality is similar if not better, especially at night)

      IgWannA2 This was pointed out sometime ago and I did add an annotation. I'll double check to see if the last UA-cam update messed something up. It's happened in a few of our videos. The remote pairing with GPS was apparently only need for a the AZ1 and actually is only part of one of special remote shipped with the AZ1. Sorry for the confusion.

      I was mistaken, you only needed the remote for the AZ1 and it had to be a specific model that was only sold with it. If you are interested in Sony they just released the AS300 and X3000 in Japan out of nowhere. Hoping to get more details soon.

    Hey. I'm getting this camera but I can't decide if I should get it with the remote. The remote is $60 more if I get the package. I will mainly use this to shoot skiing footage. Should I get the remote with it? Basically how necessary do you think the remote is. Also if I choose to get just the camera now and remote later, the 2nd gen is $100 and the first gen is $50 so which would be a better buy?

    Thanks for the video mate, well done. One thing though: you're mixing up MB (MegaBytes) and Mb (Megabits). The ExtremePro is U3 and as such has a minimum write speed of 30MB (MegaBytes), which equals 30x8=240Mb (Megabits). That's more than fast enough to handle Sony's xavc s codec (50Megabits/s). Actually a U1 should be enough with its 80Mbits/s (=10MB/s) but I wouldn't risk it... Hope that clears it up for you ;)

    man I am confused about the under water section I want to get this camera I was to believe it could go 15 feet into water with the default housing. I only want to go 4-5 feet under tops, after seeing the difference in clarity with the bubble lens vs flat lens? but with the 100v version.. so you actually take out the lens? or is it the case housing that is flat? what would i need to get it to be as clear as the video on the right on this as200v model if the default housing can not do it.?
    Thanks

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      ***** Defualt case it ships with is more of a protective housing. Good for up to 3 meters underwater but they fail to mention the footage will look blurry. It sucks but the case you need (link below) will set you back $50. This case will work great in or out of water light the default case but under water it gives you crystal clear results.

    Hi i bought the as200v and i remember you saying you need atleast a 60mb write speed. My audio is all distorted and the video skips and slows down in sections. I bought the bundle and it came with a transcend micro sdxc uhs1 64 gb class 10 and 45mb of write speed. Is this happening because the write speed on my card isnt high enough or is it just my cam? thanks

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      Marcus Vollans Is this your card below? If so the write speed is closer to 21mbs according to users tests. Could be the issue. The read speed is 45. However it shouldn't cause you issues if you turn off XAVCs. I don't have a lot of recommend cards outside the ones in my more information section above BUT class 10 is a wanring sign. If it wrote the speeds needed chances are it would be labeled u1 or u3. Of course the format you got XC is spot on and the size is great with other cards that have the right specs but the write speed itself seems really low. Thanks for sharing your experiences though. If you do try another card and have different results please follow up. :D Can always add more cards to recommend to the list.

I found that on my computer (I think it is not powerful enough), I can't play the high frame rate and high bitrate files from Action Cam Creator directly, but if I go through to the final step, the saved files can be played by media players.

    I need some serious help with this. I purchased this camera yesterday and I still can't get it to record videos. First of all the screen is just blinking all the time, atleast when I've selected movie mode. And it doesn't say how much time I have to record, it just says media and 1080P 60p, plus a lot of signs on top. A red light is blinking on top of the camera right next to the GPS mark. Can some please tell me what to do?! I purchased a Sandisk Ultra micro SDXC card, 64GB up to 80MB/s.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  8 років тому

      +MrRapala91 sounds like your micro sd card is inserted upside down or isn't sitting in correctly. Try flipping it over or sliding it back in a little straighter. The slot is designed for two formats and can be a little tricky to slide in correctly. I do this all the time. You can do this while its powered on. The camera will let you know when everything is settled in correctly.

    • @MrRapala91
      @MrRapala91 8 років тому

      +MarkHawkCam Hi Mark :) All I can say is, thank you so much. It seems like I had inserted the card the wrong way sideways, now I can record videos. I tested it shooting at 1080P 60 fps (XAVC) and the results looked great. Btw, do you recommend any softwares that will allow me to edit my videos? I went to Sony's website and they have something called "Action Cam Movie Creator"
      Again, many thanks for your help. Quick responses are always a good plus :)

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  8 років тому

      +MrRapala91 I would start with that for now. It'll also include a codec for youe computer to better handle Sony's clips. It installs that with the software and the codec will help with other software you might move onto later or just previewing clips in a browser. I'd suggest Adobe Premiere Pro CC if you find yourself really getting into making videos.

    Do i need to buy waterproof casing for this

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому +2

      +tanisha hudson It's splash proof so things like rain or snow wont kill the camera. I'd bet you could drop it in a puddle and it would be fine. The water proof case would be great at protecting it near a beach or from bigger impacts but the default water proof housing isn't good for recording underwater. The bubble lens distorts the light in a way making the footage blurry. If you are filming underwater you'll need the Sony X1000's dive case which has a flat lens.

    I got my AS200V about 3 days and I think the AS100V is better and weaker depending on what you want to do with it .
    The menu is faster, it has 120fps ready on camera and picture quality is better too.
    BUT...this one ( AS200V ) have better image quality on both full hd and hd video, PLUS, it does better on low light (more info less noise)
    The wind noise reduction is AWESOME! It works very well in deed!
    With GPS, Wi-Fi, Full HD 50P (PAL FORMAT) and VR ON it still sucks less battery then the AS100V.
    And don't forget about LOOP MODE, good to use on your car or bike and LIVE STREAM if you are a Vlogger ;)
    Overall I don't think that the AS200V is a must to upgrade from the AS100V, but if you use a drone, hate wind noise or do some Vlogging on live shore you got to have this one.
    Hope this helps ;)

    Looking at Sony's comparison for the HDRAS200V and HDRAS100VR "www.sony.com.au/product/CompareProducts.action?site=hp_en_AU_i&models=HDR-AS200V&models=HDR-AS100VR" it doesn't show the HDRAS200V as having an external mic connector. Does it actually have one, as sometimes I may want to run an external mic to the exhaust or other places.
    I like the fact I can see the image output on the remote on these Sony units, which might help if one of the camera's flies off the car hopefully.
    Otherwise what other alternative cameras should I be looking at, that have an external mic. connector?
    Thank you.

    i think he is mistaken about the gps on the camera, in this model the gps module is inside de camera itself, not in the remote as on the az1 model.

    Hey guys. I djust got the as200v and ive got the micro sd card 32 gb pro from samsung, and it says its class 10 and can write at 80 mbit's but when i try to record with the 50 mbit's on the as200v it says i need a class 10 card. Help!

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      TheLoneWolf074 What's the exact model Micro SD card? Does it say XC or HC on the front. Is it this one by any chance? www.amazon.com/Samsung-Class-Adapter-MB-MG32DA-AM/dp/B00IVPU894/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428022846&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+pro+32gb

    • @TheLoneWolf074
      @TheLoneWolf074 9 років тому

      MarkHawkCam Yes it's that one. I talked to the guy from the shop i bought it from and he said that there shouldn't be any problems. he also explained that XC simply stands for the capacity of the card(64gb), so he was bit confused why it didn't work. Anyways, he recommended that i could try the sandisk extreme plus 32 gb card, and i had the same problem with that card. Does that mean i need a card with atleast 64gb? (sorry for the long comment lol)

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      TheLoneWolf074 Card needs to be XC, it's a format and writing speed issue from my experiences and talking with others. I just know HC doesn't allow modes or features to be enabled. It's a pain for me sometimes and really need to sit down with an expert and have them explain all the differences to me.
      Anyway you might have to go 64gbs because I can never really find an XC 32gb card that matches the specs I need. I personally would recommend the Lexar 633x or Sandisk Extreme Pro. A 64 San Disk Extreme with the write specs can work, I use them in my AS100V but Sandisk changed the base specs on a lot of them sometime ago. Try and keep that write speed as High as you can get if you go with the 64gb San Disk Extreme. Links are in the more information section above my video that I've worked with.

      MarkHawkCam Okay, thanks for the replies! there's a samsung XC 64 gb with 80 mbits write speed and 90 mbit's read speed on sale here so i think im gonna get that one. Thanks for the help, i really apreciate it!

    Does anyone have any experience of editing the files from the as200vr? I have been trying to edit gopro files with corel video studio and it will not take gopro files even though they are MP4 format. I also use a normal camcorder and want to mix vidoes.

      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      +climbcompasswest Might be your machine needs some codec. Not sure it'll work but try install the ActionCam official software then see if your footage will import to coral. It's an old school solution that could help but again, might not. www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/HDR-AS200V

    I'm looking at buying this from best buy, at the bottom it says "Requires NFC-compatible mobile device. Check device’s user manual for compatibility" Why do they say that you need an NFC mobile device? Sorry, I know very little about these things, just trying to find a good camera that I can use for dirt biking and I don't have a smart phone. thank you

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  8 років тому

      I'm assuming it offers NFC and you'd need an NFC device to use that feature. This is just an option that allows you to tap the camera up against the NFC device to connect it. Avoiding having to use wifi passwords and pairing. That's how I'd interpreted the required part. Make sure when buying the micro SD card that it's formated as a XC formatted card. I messed up when recording this video that the issues had to do with the speed of the card but it was it's format. To use the XAVC-S formats (best quality modes) you need a micro SD card that is XC formated NOT HC. XC cards are often 64gb or bigger and should have a XC right on the card. You can see it in all those links in the more information section below. If you use an HC card you'll be limited to lower bit rate modes which don't look as good especially when moving. It's a slightly more expensive card if you're limited to Best Buy but I think they have some good Samsung and SanDisk options for you. Otherwise, I'd suggest a Lexar x633 from Amazon.

      Ok, it says, NFC, Yes (NFC forum Type 3 Tag compatible) This stuff is so confusing to me! lol. I was looking at getting the cheapest gopro but this looks like a much better camera.

      Also if you aren't familiar with it, check out the Sony AS50. It's a tad softer in quality but it's UI is snappy, remote is way better, and nicer battery life. Here is out review of it. ua-cam.com/video/UyMNJNEXwWo/v-deo.html

    Just to clarify:
    You're mixing up Mbit/s and MByte/s. 1 Mb/s = 1/8 MB/s.
    If you'd have to write 50 Mb/s, this equals 6,25 MB/s.
    U1 Cards which can write at 18 MB/s are already sufficient.

      With most action cameras you get use to the fact almost everything it's pointed at is in perspective. That said I'd check out the Yi 4K action camera if you want a camera with Sony features + a nice LCD screen.

    Great vIdeo but get your units of measurement right :)
    SDXC means it has at least 64 GB (32 GB is called SDHC) which has nothing to do with the speed. For some reason Sony wants a big card for recording XAVCS.
    Class 10 means it has a consistent writing speed of at least 10 MB/Megabyte (not Megabit) so every Class 10 card writes above 60 Megabit (Mb) a second (8 Bit = 1 Byte; 10 MB/Megabyte = 80 Mb/Megabit) and should be enough.
    UHS-1 and UHS-3 is just even faster than Class 10: www.sdcard.org/consumers/speed/speed_class/
    So you basically bought a card that writes 720 Mb/sec when you really just need 60 Mb/sec.

    • @markmd9
      @markmd9 8 років тому

      +Dominic I misstook 50Mb/s with 50MB/s, I thought i need a card with real write speed higher
      so I've bought a 32GB Kingston microSDHC 633x r/w 90MB/s / 80MB/s;
      It din't work from the start, I had to format in in exFAT with Full Format (not Quick) to make it work
      so in the end it is not mandatory to be a SDXC or start from 64GB

    Thank you for the preview the camera can even shoot panorama with the steady shot turned of 170 degree fish eye it will fix the GPS data from your connected Smart phone
    +MarkHawkCam are the Photos better Quality than the 100 model?
    Action cameras have fish eye lenses
    the Sony-HDR-AS100V have 170 degree without steady shot activated
    image quality are not up to a DSLR but they are small and handy.
    i think that the smart phones will take over in a few years

    You know, it's very annoying to see "HDR-AS200V" in the title, then start watching the video and find out it's actually the VR version.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      The only difference is the wrist remote but contents/specs are the same. I believe I go over this when I show the V only box we had picked up as well. The title is V because of the way VR limited search results.

    @brixxmovies 9 років тому

    You are confusing Mb/s with mbits...!!! It records a stream of 50/60 mbits which is around 7/7,5Mb! No cam goes over 10Mb/s when recording 1080p! ANY good Class10 card is enough

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      Matteo Bricchi Few people pointed this out sometime ago but a Class 10 won't work to full potential. It'll allows you to record in MP4 but not XAVC-S which takes a huge hit on the quality. You still need an XC formatted card Class U1/3 that meets minimum specs. Sony is very picky on which Micro-SD cards will unlock max potential.

    That deal with the GPS info kind of seems like an unnecessary hook to buy the remote with the camera. I would rather have the GPS info stored in the camera for later retrieval.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      You might not need the remote. That might be the case with this version. I haven't tested it yet but other users said the remote was only needed for the AZ1 (there sorta mini camera). The new one also doesn't even appear to include the remote with GPS inside. I plan on going into it in the Part 2 which is 1 reason why I delayed the posting of it. All the answers should be in the part 2 in a day or two.
