It worked great, and probably saved me a couple hundred bucks by doing it myself.
I looked everywhere for the 69-D but couldn’t find anything (ebay, amzn, wish, ali). Had to go to Tesla but 3 out of 4 SeC told me the camera was restricted goods and can’t be sold. 4th one sold me the camera for CHF450, almost same in USD. insane prices but didn’t know what else to do.
Thank you for your video! Just repaired my Model S late 2016 with 69-00-D. Wouldn’t have tried it without this video. A few things I did differently: Removed chrome bar incl. plastic support bar. Removing the plastic covers inside of door was too much of trouble for me, broke almost all clips. so I decided to try it through the handle hole at the bottom. Was quite difficult one handed but worked in the end. Tesla now sells the tape precut in this shape so that was way easier. took me 3h nonetheless.
I'm glad I was able to help out. I'm honestly surprised at how many people have actually done this modification, but I think it makes a notable difference in rear visibility. Having the precut tape would've been awesome. That was probably the biggest pain for me doing this. Lol

Great video! At night my original backup camera is basically worthless. I have to apply the brakes to get enough light to see anything. Does this upgrade resolve that issue?
I just replaced the rear camera. After removing the three smaller covers, I found out, that it is absolutely not neccesary. Removing of the left handle (for closing the trunk) is enough. Hi there, first of all, thanks for the video, helped a lot. I replaced the cam now with an original one from Tesla, but the screen stays black. Any idea (beside reboot), what has to be done to make the cam working?
There shouldn't be anything else required to get it working. If the car sees a camera plugged in it automatically displays. The cameras are not serialized to the car, they're plug and play.
Hey! Awesome video, Im gonna try to do this myself. I have a faulty backup camera on my 2017 model X that needs to be replaced, do you know if the model s and model x use the same camera? all the cameras i find on ebay seems to be for model S only.
Do you think it is possible to create an aftermarket backup camera that is motorized to hide when not used? (to avoid getting the lens dirty) Hm maybe not ideal on a Tesla where the camera is always used by FSD?
Just had my camera replaced by my SC since the lens on the old was cracked. After the following car wash I noticed water drops around the edges of the two handles and condensation inside one of the lights. The water leaks comes from all the holes behind the external trim. These leaks must be fixed to avoid future problems with the lights and contacts! I have found that this is a common problem on Tesla MS - even with new cars. The design is poor and it is difficult to seal the weak points.
It is possible, but a lot more work. See this forum post on TMC in regards to BearBu's 360 Degree overhead view and HDMI Interface: teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/video-of-bearbus-360-degree-overview-in-operation.147727/
You stated that it took 2-3 hours to do. Which part took the longest? Was it the heat gun part? I'm assuming that the purpose of the heat gun was to melt the double sided tape.
Yeah, carefully removing the Tesla chrome bar and then adding new adhesive was the longest and most tedious part. That’s correct, the adhesive that Tesla used is very strong and the heat gun weakens the bond. You could also use some strong fishing line to help cut through the double sided tape.
@@JoeMartinMVC Last question...........I hope!!! How many strips of double sided tape are there. From the video, it looks like there are three separate sections.

Hi @JoeMartinMVC, I have mine rear camera cracked. I have ordered a second hand one. My camera is tesla s 2018, and the second hand camera was also taken from the same year car. The part number the seller quotes is 1061269-00-b. Is it supposed to be the same the one in my car too? The b and c models are identical in terms of resolution, C is just a hair better with low light situations from what I've seen. From what I can find on Tesla Parts pages B was used in 16 and 17, and C was used from 18 on.
It would depend on what it is you're wanting in a car. If you're wanting border-line supercar levels of torque and acceleration for a fraction of the cost? Definitely.
