  • Here’s a quick video I decided to throw together of my 51’ Packard. I picked this car up for a song about 6 months ago, and with the help of a few friends from school got her back on the road in short order. The car was mechanically in excellent shape, needing only standard tune up parts, and a fuel tank. I went through and replaced all the brake components, and as you can tell from the video they work well! The car is equipped with the 327CID straight 8, and the Ultramatic 2 speed trans. I have to say, as excellent as the car is, the trans is probably the biggest downfall of the car. Low range is far to low, really only being useful for ripping sequoias out of the ground, and high is also to low, with the car turning around 2800rpms at 60. I know driving was far different in 51’, but for modern roads it can be challenging. Other than that though, I have found it to be an excellent driving car. It tracks well, the non-power assisted brakes work well, and the engine is smooth as silk, and quite powerful. It has been a pleasure to get this car in the road!

The device is called an inverse oiler. There were different brands but Marvel Mystery Oil was a favorite. Motor Rhythm was another brand, others were Redex, Bardahl, and Rislone.
Yours is an Ampco Lubricator made to use Marvel Mystery Oil. They still make them, they sell for around $100 bucks.
The idea was to inject a small amount of special thin oil into the intake to lubricate the valves and rings. This was said to double engine life - in those days rings and valves needed regular service and repair, at intervals of 25,000 to 40,000 miles.
It was called an inverse oiler because it injected a small amount of oil when vacuum was high as at idle, and a larger amount when vacuum was low as at high speed or when climbing a hill.
I would try and get it working and use it. Today's gas is especially "dry" and does not contain lead additives which protect the valves.
Incidentally the Ultramatic is made to do all your driving in high gear. Low is only for emergency use, starting on a steep hill, in mud or snow, or driving very slowly. Don't make a habit of starting in low and shifting up, it will cause unnecessary wear on the transmission.

Kind of the opposite from a PCV line oil trap which is sort of a thing today to add on although I don't think any car comes with it.

I like the sound a straight 8 makes at idle.

OMG, Harry! That is fabulous! Straight 8, lots of bells & whistles, and that custom steering wheel! Can’t wait to see it in person.

327 was five main bearing. 300 shared the longer chassis and body with the Patrician, but only Patrician had the nine main. Your car is a treasure. You're lucky. Keep it.

There was both a 5 bearing and 9 bearing different 327 Straight Eights in production at the same time? Also a 287 that was the same engine block as the 5 bearing 327 ?
I imagine the 3 speed Plus overdrive would drive so much better than the primitive automatic.

@@davidpowell3347 288 was standard on the 200 (in '53 became Clipper). I have a '53 Clipper Deluxe with 327 3-speed plus overdrive. It's quite flexible, will comfortably climb anything, and do 70 on the freeway. However, yours is what was available/affordable to you. Enjoy it.

@@davidpowell3347 Not really. After it locks up it's like a manual trans in say 3rd gear. (3 speed trans.) Its kind of like driving a golf cart because normally you dont even feel the shift. And really the shift is actually the transmission going from torque converter to direct drive. Its really smooth

That's a really great find. I'm sure you have plans for upgrades, etc. I would drop that oil pan as God only knows what kind of sludge and nastiness could be lurking in there. No such thing as multigrade or detergent oil in 1951 and oil from the 1970s was good but there is way better out there now.

This is a car I would love to find. I’ve never anything prior to the 70’s. Any tips I’d appreciated!!

I too have a 1951 Packard 300 Unless it was special ordered it would have a 5 main bearing engine 150HP perhaps if the 9 main bearing motor she would be 155 hp. Also Ultramatic is not like any other early automatic

Early Powerglides and dynaflos acted like it except no lockup shift and worse gas mileage. Very slow.

Anti vaporlock Canister perhaps . Old Carbs were prone to vaporlocking . Could burn a Starter up if ya didn't know how to undo situation .
