  • Hi guys! Short one today... I wanted to get the old 1953 Packard Clipper started and see if it was still able to move itself around the yard like ir did for the "Straight 8 Showdown"... Anyone care to guess why we might want this guy running again?

Also: We just got in a new shipment of "Same Old Shit" coffee mugs, so get them while they last, haha!

To borrow a phrase from across the border, "it's a treat" to watch these ancient classics grunt back into life & run around the CWM compound. It's as cool as watching all of the bikes at #wheelsthroughtime get their yearly start and run. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the Packard is next to get the restoration treatment?

7 years ago you replied to my suggesting you make this a driver when you 1st pulled it out of the trees. Its still the very top comment posted. You said she was too far gone and seized. I was so excited for the straight 8 shoot out. Now hints of more!? I couldn't be more thrilled. What a fun journey to follow. This is the only car channel I watch now. And its because of cars like this.

I absolutely love this car! This challenge inspired me to save a 54 Clipper from a local junkyard! I got it up and running and had it for a while. Then I ran out of room but found it a good home. I would absolutely love to see this car get a tidying up, like the 58 Del Ray and 59 Bel Air!

I was just a kid in the mid to late 50s and my dad although not being wealthy, just a regular working guy with four kids, and also being a dedicated Buick man bought an early 50 something Packard very similar to the one you got and owned it for a while. I was too young to understand anything about the Packard but seeing you get that beautiful car started and running after all those years just brought back a lot of memories. You guys are the goat! Scott, you and all of the agents remind me of myself in my younger years with my friends tinkering on old cars in the backyard or the driveway. We didn't do it as a hobby, we did it so we'd have something to drive.😅🤣

One of my favorite stories involving Packard is how the company rose to the occasion when they were to build Rolls-Royce Merlin aircraft engines under Lend-Lease during World War Two. Their engineers went right to work using blueprints and samples, and had Merlins coming off the line in half a year. The Rolls-Royce technical and manufacturing advisors were said to have been amazed that Packard knocked significant wasted time off simply by changing some assembly sequences. It’s also said that Packard housed those tech support Brits in Windsor because living in Canada might make them feel more at home, but the truth is, they were regarded as something of an interference, and the production day could get going while they were still on the ferry across the Detroit River!

I bet she has a nice ride all things considered. My Mom worked for a family who had a Packard and when my parents got married they lent the car to my Dad on their wedding day. On the way out to the farm my Dad had they went past his cousin who was looking at the Packard driving by not paying attention to his driving and promptly drove his car into the ditch. Those cars were an eye catcher for sure. So glad you saved one Scott. Runs pretty good! Thank you for sharing!!

I would like to spend an hour walking around your yard. All of those cars were on the streets when I was a boy.
The Packard IS a thing of beauty, though far behind GM in design and of course Saint Vergil Exner.
The Ford in its Vicky getup looks sharp. 90% of the Fords at that time were 4 door sedans and black. 80% of the cars were Chevys, Fords or Plymouths in my town of 35,000. Most people were working class and were thrilled and grateful just to have a good car...no frills.

Whats amazing is the Ultramatic transmission srill works. They had problems with them and after Packard went out of business and the spare parts dried up many in an attempt to keep their cars on the road adapted GM Hydromatics to them. Back in the early 1970's a neighbor that collected Packards used to do that to his. That was long before reproduction parts became available.

I guess the reason you drove the straight V8 car away is, that you need the space because the V8 showdown Studebaker will be driven out of his narrow parking lot.

I like that old Packard very much. In high school one of my classmates had one in a 2 door sedan. It wasn't very fast in drag races until it hit 40 mph and then it took off. The biggest problem was it was a huge gas sucker. The torque in it would thrust everyone back into their seat which is why we liked riding in it. Sadly, in the old days people got bored of their cars after a while and drove them down to the junk yards in perfect condition; and that's what happened to this one.

  • @SuperMAZ007

The Packard inline 8 sounds just awesome but these old gals are also very thirsty on gasoline. One thing I do is saving rain water for a temporary cooling system or just for a cooling system flush. Word of advice for Scott is get premium gasoline and mix it with 2 stroke oil to keep the old engines better lubricated from the inside. If they are left outside close any openings on the engine to prevent mice from entering inside. They can enter from also a broken tailpipe. I have to admit Scott has some immense strength in his arms to life the Packard hood all alone.

I love the idea of the straight 8s vs the V-8s in a challenge. The early 1950s was a change for 8 cylinder cars. The straight 8s were disappearing and the V-8, though around for a while, were beginning to dominate. Love maybe to see a straight 6 vs slant 6 vs. V-6 challenge someday. Call in the low end 6 challenge!

Awesome startup on the straight 8. Great when they run! I also got my 1966 AMC Marlin running today, great learning tool for the kids!

Hi Scott , Just a thought . It seems so funny that the Packard makes all that noise and smokes like a chimney and it is barely moving . Todays Cars are so quiet , You do not hear them running at all . Gotta Love old Iron . Thanks Agent Scott & Francine.

I just came in to get my Wednesday night CWM fix and here your working on the 53 Clipper. I came in from working on my 53 Cavalier!!! I ❤ these old Packards! You and your show definitely influenced me to buy the Cavalier.......I was better behaved before I started hanging out with you and the agents! 😄

She has a few rattles but it fired right up and moves. Personally, I think it needs some love and getting back on the road.

The Clipper's of the 50's were considered to be t6he most stylish cars of their time by many. Packard was also at the front of innovation with automatic transmissions. It was not a cheap car which was the main thing that took Packard down.
