Never seen this type of puzzle and enjoyed solving it immensely.
Thank you for introducing this puzzle! I've never heard of 'tapa' before, and I feel like it's the kind of a puzzle I'd really struggle to grasp just by reading a set of written rules; but seeing your example for a couple of bits really helped grasp the idea of this, and it was a joy to solve after that! Really cool stuff.
These videos have become the highlight of my day, cheers. Would love to see more of these nikoli-style puzzles. Just really really fun to watch you solve and to hone my own techniques.
Loved it. I saw there was no way across the middle or top so the 3 at the bottom was forced and worked my way down the right and back up the left which felt much easier than the path you took.
UA-cam just randomly recommended this one for me, and it was really interesting. Would like to see more Tapa on the channel.
14:37 I think I'm getting the hang of these. (Also, I keep thinking of "Tappa Tappa Tappa" from a particular Simpsons episode.)
The part that really got me stuck was how you played out the hypothetical around the two 3's in the center. You had to make a long string of potential moves to identify the conflict. Once I got that tip from you, the whole puzzle opened up. Not sure I would have ever found it on my own though! Really enjoyed that one. My first ever "tapa".
Very cool mate watching from Australia would love to see more
Another enjoyable puzzle that took me over an hour to solve... Obviously I need more practice with logic puzzles other than classic sudokus.
As a few others have commented, at first I didn't realize that the 'Check' button on the web app doesn't work accurately since this isn't a number puzzle... almost freaked out when I first saw the message "that doesn't look right" pop up, thinking I had wasted over an hour of my time... then I carefully watched the video and realized I was an idiot. lol.
Thank you for the interesting puzzle as always, looking forward to more.
Never understood Tapa puzzles, but I think I can finally grasp it after watching this video. Thank you.
Fun puzzle! It reminds me of Minesweeper
that was a very helpful comparison to help my thick brain grasp this puzzle. cheers.
Minesweeper + nonogram + nurikabe
The Americanized version should be called minesweeper sudoku
It's like minesweeper but actually fun because you're never forced to guess and pray you don't lose all your progress if you're wrong
Have you considered buying an eye tracker so we can see where you are looking in the puzzle?
That would be awesome
I think it would be more distracting than informative.
Not really. The way eyetrackers are usually shown, it wouldn't be distracting at all.
@@pittagiiya I think you and I have a very different definition of distracting. That opaque bubble flying all over the screen is pretty distracting
Love this! Great puzzle, would love to see more on the channel!
Loved it! Thanks for introducing me to Tapa puzzles.
First time I have seen this type of puzzle. Very cool to watch you solve it. Yes Please more of these!
I'm studying it right now for a contest. Thank you
I solved the puzzle in about 2:40 without any fancy logic on the 122 clue- instead I noticed that the only place that the left and right halves of the puzzle could be connected was through the 13 clue at the bottom, as any other path would break one of the clues. The 1 in the 13 then had to be reached via the 3 above it, which in turn resolved much of the top by propagating through the other clues.
Global connectivity is always a nice constraint to keep in mind when solving Tapa puzzles, I've found.
Have y'all ever played The Witness? It's a different form than the puzzles you normally upload, but the total experience of deducing the puzzle rules as more concepts are introduced and added seems like it would be right up your alley.
Except The Witness... isn't really a good game.
Thanks for introducing me to this new puzzle type! managed it in 15 minutes - would love to see some more
Interesting that the part I solved first (after seeing your initial logic for the 3 and 2-2 squares and placing that in the puzzle) was the absolute last thing you did. I saw immediately that it had to come down the right edge and go in at those two points and then come across, fulfilling the 3 of the 1-3, which led me me connecting the lower middle 3 and completing the previous two squares. By that point, it naturally led through the 2, 1-2, and 1-1 on the lower left. The upper middle 3 and remaining 1-1 then fell into place, and then I was able to connect the upper right, and finally finish the 1-2-2 and 1-1-1 squares to complete the puzzle.
Remarkable that this is designed so you can essentially solve it on instinct, so long as you keep a few guiding principles in mind. Took me 10 minutes, which is far shorter than any of the other puzzles on this page. (My sudoku game is rather weak.)
I suppose I bifurcated halfway through, and it just worked out, but that's not as rough as sudoku, where you have much more to keep track of, and reaching a dead end on bifurcation and tracing back requires less work here, where you can bifurcate by simply using grey instead of black.
Very interesting puzzle would definitely want to see more of it! Keep up the good work
Never done one before and this took me around 6 minutes. I have to admit though I found the answer by trial and error rather than logically working through it - bit of a weakness in the puzzle design in my opinion; they shouldn't be easier to brute force than solve logically.
I think I found my new favourite puzzle type!
feildpaint If you have an Apple product the “100 Logic Games - Time Killers” has a lot of different tapas versions to play, there is a finite amount of each though
Quite a bit like minesweeper... Interesting!
This was very cool, thank you for sharing
More tapa!
Minesweeper without Bombs :o I like it
Oh :D apprently I total misunderstood the rules and really did it like Minesweeper. Yet I finished with only two wrong black cells
Hey, i am enjoying your channel a lot the last months. Do you know what app is the best for playing sudokus on your phone. Cause i use your 2 ways of pencil notes
Reminds me alot of the game series Hexcells on steam. Might be worth looking into these, if you like this kind of puzzle
These are wonderful
This is the first Tapa puzzle I have seen, and I was able to solve it.
Thought it was quite easy cause all cells th
No. See m.ua-cam.com/video/bO6L4sVrRnc/v-deo.html and note that there are squares near the corners which are not reachable.
12min. Didn't feel like I was thinking my way through though, somehow.
In the rules and info example how did the boxes on the left side get shaded in??? I assume it was the 4 but don’t the shaded boxes need to be next to/ diagonal from a number?
They don't, the shaded boxes can be anywhere. The trick is to realize that the "wall" needs to actually have a "path" everywhere -- because of the 4s, there's no other way for it to get to the top left corner than the path it takes in the solution.
This reminded me of minesweeper...
OMG, for some stupid reason I thought that for the 1/2 given on the left border, the 1 has to be on the top and the 2 on the bottom. And it had such nice implications. But then I ran into a contradiction :(
check doesnt work on web for this puzzle?
Turns out I'm pretty rubbish at sudoku, but I thought that was cool, and not too hard. I'm not sure what that says about me, but there it is.
Did it in 15 min but didn't notice any logic aside from the first 2 blocks. Just messed around with it and somehow made it to the end.
I wonder, how would I go about making a Tapa?
Sorta like Minesweeper... but not.
the black squares look like a fish
Superb!
why would row6col7 be forced?
it could also go farther right in row 5
rigdigwus the central 3 has 4 Black candidates. R6R7 R7C7 are both forced Black because they appear in both of the 2 possible configurations remaining.
I solved it and the check function says it is wrong. Afterwards I watched the rest of the video and you have the same puzzle.
Something buggy with the check function?^^
once i understood the rules, it was rather easy.
Aspire to be in a relationship where you both talk about each other with the same adoration this man uses to describe puzzles.
First time hearing about Tapa, it was fun! One thing though, the web app doesn't seem to know how to check it, and glitches out a bit. Fortunately it's pretty easy to visually check, but seeing as it's a glitch I figured you should know.
I used lots of bifurcation to solve this one.
first tapa puzzle I've ever done, solving plus researching what tapa is took me 38 minutes, either I got really lucky or this really isn't that hard
I looked at the rules for the first time, thought I completed it, I swear the boxes are good, the line is continuous, but apparently I got it wrong so I guess I'll watch to see what i did wrong :(
Edit: ok so my puzzle looks identical to yours so Idk why the check isn't working for me, but at least I don't feel as confused
I solved it correctly on the site, but keeps saying "that doesn't look right". Verified what I had against the video and it is the exact same. :(
The site was made for validating sudoku, and so it won’t be able to deal with this puzzle. It’s complaining because you have no numbers in some cells, which will obviously be the case in this sort of puzzle.
@@chompyzilla Aaaah ok
unfortunate that the solver isn't able to identify a correct a solution, interesting puzzle nonetheless
First!
I SERIOUSLY doubt that it will ever be a classic.
eireannsg it already is a classic!
@@freddiehand6551 I dont think so.
@@eireannsg It is a classic in the logic puzzles world. If you define 'classic' as 'global sensation', then you are probably correct. Unless Cracking the Cryptic popularises it?...
