- Welcome to Season 1 of Go Bold! This 6-part video series is focused on the diversity of sailors within the Royal Canadian Navy, all of whom are serving at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, in British Columbia, Canada. This series was shot on location in Esquimalt in early 2022.
For Episode 4 we continue to speak with submariners aboard HMCS Corner Brook (SSK 878), one of Canada’s four Victoria class hunter-killer submarines. Sailor First Class Monique Lutyk gives us a great tour of the sub's galley and bunk spaces; while Lieutenant Ben Courchene shares his motivation to serve on submarines.
Our thanks go to the men and women of the Royal Canadian Navy for their kindness, time and support which enabled this series to become a reality.
A special thanks goes to Davie Shipbuilding for their kind support of Go Bold! Davie is Canada’s premier shipbuilder and a global leader in the delivery of specialist, mission-critical vessels to government and commercial customers. Since the acquisition by Inocea Group in 2012, Davie has delivered many industry firsts, including some of the world’s most complex and pioneering vessels: Dynamically positioned subsea construction vessels, dual-fuel ferries, and a combat support ship, which was the largest and greenest naval vessel ever delivered by a Canadian facility.
We would also like to thank Telus STORYHIVE for facilitating the creation of this 6-part video series which is geared to new and locally representative content creators. The hope of this series is you enjoy the wonderful representation of Canadian Navy sailors who are serving their country with pride and professionalism.

As a former submariner and Chicoutimi survivor I’m really happy to see the new generation of sailors with the same light in there eye as I did soo long ago now. I was Chief Cook of Corner Brook when she just got back from the UK. Great video , very well said and you guys and gals are an inspiration to all the young people out there that want to to something out of this world ! Literally! A space ship but under water. Congrats. DBF
Thank you very much for the kind feedback, it really means a lot! 🙂 Thank you also for serving! I'm happy these videos resonate, and that they show the wonderful folks that serve their nation, just as you did. Go Bold!
I was in during the 90s and was going to go subs it would have been when we still had he O-boats. I ended up taking FRP instead. I was just wondering if guys were posted right to a sub as soon as they were done their sub course, which I believe was about 6 weeks, or did they still have more training ashore to do? Thanks.
Great in depth interview with the cook. She obviously takes a lot of pride in her career. I enjoyed the tour.of the sub. Wow...very limited room and every square inch of space is used to its advantage.
Thank you so much for the kind words -- we are trying our best =) And I agree, Monique is a wonderful and positive person. It's great to see people like her serving in uniform.
I wonder if the cook (Lutyk) realizes how much of a pioneer she is in this regard? It would be cool for her to reflect back on this time when she has grandchildren or is old and telling this story to someone. Great that she is respected and that they all function like a big family. The cooking conditions seem very primative so it must be a challenge doing what she does.
Much respect to our young soldiers who dedicate much of their lives protecting our country and being involved with NATO work too.
Thank you for the kind feedback on the video we produced. We agree, she is a dynamic and impressive woman, and an inspiration. I hope more people watch this and learn about the men and women that serve the country.
as a former ship yard worker I was involved with 3 of the skk 2400 subs best jog ever
bacon buddy's are some of the best breakfast i have ever had.
God bless our brave young soldiers, sailors and aircrews who have signed up to defend our country no matter what may come which is no small thing 👍🇨🇦
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching -- we have more coming soon! =)

Stay safe to all
Thank you for watching! They are impressive people indeed!
Congrats on the recent promotion. Well done!!
Geez, Army to subs. Now THAT is a change! It's a good thing Corner Brook got the updates that Vic did not. Not sure the SCC should have been filmed though.
Great video!
Thank you Marc! Really appreciate the positive feedback =)
I give a lot of credit to those people who serve in subs. I'm a boater and love the water, but on top of it and a little snorkeling. But under hundreds of feet of water in a vessel with the same room as a sardine in a can, is not the thing for me. Nope it takes a real special kind of person to do that.
Totally agree! It does take a special breed. I was thankful to learn about them in doing these videos. They are very dedicated and professional folks.
awesome video
Thanks for the positive comment. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. There's more to come! =)
I didn't know you could smoke inside the ship.
Code 38
Pretty shocking they don't have an apartment size washer/dryer......
I was surprised too!
Pretty shocking they don't have an apartment size washer/dryer......must smell lovely on the way home......🤢
There aren't many women because some (not all) officers and nco's have an abysmal record of discrimination and misogynistic behavior towards female members of the CF, hopefully this will change......and yes , I've served and I've seen it for myself...
they should not be on submarines
