- Welcome to Season 1 of Go Bold! This 6-part video series is focused on the diversity of sailors within the Royal Canadian Navy, all of whom are serving at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, in British Columbia, Canada. This series was shot on location in Esquimalt in early 2022.
For Episode 3 we speak with submariners aboard HMCS Corner Brook (SSK 878), one of Canada’s four Victoria class hunter-killer submarines. Master Sailor Jimmy Chou gives us a great tour of the sub's control room and engine room compartments; while Sailor First Class Mathew McFarlane gives us a tour of the torpedo room.
Our thanks go to the men and women of the Royal Canadian Navy for their kindness, time and support which enabled this series to become a reality.
A special thanks goes to Davie Shipbuilding for their kind support of Go Bold! Davie is Canada’s premier shipbuilder and a global leader in the delivery of specialist, mission-critical vessels to government and commercial customers. Since the acquisition by Inocea Group in 2012, Davie has delivered many industry firsts, including some of the world’s most complex and pioneering vessels: Dynamically positioned subsea construction vessels, dual-fuel ferries, and a combat support ship, which was the largest and greenest naval vessel ever delivered by a Canadian facility.
We would also like to thank Telus STORYHIVE for facilitating the creation of this 6-part video series which is geared to new and locally representative content creators. The hope of this series is you enjoy the wonderful representation of Canadian Navy sailors who are serving their country with pride and professionalism.

The silent service in this country really does not get the recognition it deserves. 🇨🇦
Well done.
We totally agree with you! Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more! =)
Thank you and great to hear it pronounced “submariner”, rather than the American pronunciation “submareener”.
Haha, we try to be as accurate as possible =) Thanks for watching! We have Season 2 coming later this year =)
Very impressive interviews with the crew, and the tour of the sub areas. Thank you for uploaded these.
Thank you for watching! We have more videos coming! =)
Impressive machine and even more impressive crew!
Man that sun looks hard.
That's a nice looking boot you Canadians have there...😅👍
Amazing. Thank you for the tour.
Thank you for the positive feedback! It means a lot! We try our best, and have more to come! =)
well done Jimmy!
Given the extent of the east and west coasts of Canada, to only have 4 submarines is rather a small fleet. A fleet of 10-12 would be better.
Totally agree with you! That's a much more appropriate number for the vast coast lines that Canada has.
I would assume after the 20+ surface ships we have on order are delivered.. New subs are next.
They are indeed. The program is called the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project. Let's see what that competition will yield.@@Jeremynicholson
@@goboldwithjoeteyattariwala should pull the old Canada-class subs plans from the archives.. Update them then at least try to contract to a Canadian company. Idk much about submersibles but is there really a huge competitive market like there is for aircraft?
@@Jeremynicholson Submarines are very complex platforms while also being a no-fail system, so although it would be great to build in Canada, that path would be decades long which in my opinion doesn't make sense for the taxpayer or for the Navy. There are a number of companies around the world that build subs, so it's best to find the right mix of capability, size and cost, and then purchase those.
They're very good boats, the former Upholder Class SSKs, though they certainly needed a lot of de-bugging by our Canadian brothers after they bought them still "nearly new" in the '90s
Nearly new??? Are you on drugs my man? I was there for the delivery, they where in very bad shape when we received them.
@@politicallyincorrect4452 I was going to go subs when I was in during the 90s but I took FRP instead. Do you remember if guys got posted to a sub immediately after they passed the sub course, which I believe was 6 weeks or so, or did they still have more training to do on shore?
Amazing interview!
Thank you very much for the kind words. They all are very impressive people. I really appreciated the time they spent to describe what they do. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it, and hope you like the other episodes too =)
👍
Hey that guy is a famous DJ, he made the original doomsday. If you know you know.
This is shocking as All of the British Diesel Subs are working on a beach. Good Job Government. All are out of commission.
BZ😊
They have a submarine? Who knew!
4 of them, and a program afoot to replace them with new ones (and more than 4).
Obviously you didn’t. But I’m not surprised.
Ah the Victoria class subs. Best Make -work project by the government. They kept the shop yards very bu$$$y...
these subs today arent deployable we need new subs
I SAW THE "SUB" AND I SAID NAH 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
5$ these never sail again..
I couldn't imagine serving in a military that is loyal to Trudeau. No thanks, hard pass.
So youd join, then quit every time the elections doesn't go your way?
They're not loyal to Trudeau though are they? Their loyalty is to the King and Governor General
Oh calm down. I swear the internet has convinced you Trudeau is a supervillain.
Another grumble gut complainer...
Their loyalty oath is to a "constitutional monarch" just like the rest of the "military forces" of the "Commonwealth of Nations".
canada has a navy? reallly?
Those things were obsolete junk when the British got rid of them
