  • Welcome to Season 1 of Go Bold! This 6-part video series is focused on the diversity of sailors within the Royal Canadian Navy, all of whom are serving at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, in British Columbia, Canada. This series was shot on location in Esquimalt in early 2022.
For Episode 5 we speak with members of the Fleet Diving Unit - Pacific. Lieutenant Kevin Okihiro is the Executive Officer and he describes the multi-role nature of the Unit. Near the end of the episode, Lt. Okihiro describes the various types of mines that clearance divers might encounter around the world.
Petty Officer Wood describes the "Awkward Drill" which is used during the Fleet Diving Unit training course; and Sailor First Class Koch-Underhill speaks about her motivation of being a clearance diver.
Our thanks go to the men and women of the Royal Canadian Navy for their kindness, time and support which enabled this series to become a reality.
A special thanks goes to Davie Shipbuilding for their kind support of Go Bold! Davie is Canada’s premier shipbuilder and a global leader in the delivery of specialist, mission-critical vessels to government and commercial customers. Since the acquisition by Inocea Group in 2012, Davie has delivered many industry firsts, including some of the world’s most complex and pioneering vessels: Dynamically positioned subsea construction vessels, dual-fuel ferries, and a combat support ship, which was the largest and greenest naval vessel ever delivered by a Canadian facility.
We would also like to thank Telus STORYHIVE for facilitating the creation of this 6-part video series which is geared to new and locally representative content creators. We hope that through this series you enjoy the wonderful representation of Canadian Navy sailors who are serving their country with pride and professionalism.

We aren't focused on anyone in particular -- we are showing that folks from all backgrounds are serving in the Armed Forces, and that's something to be proud of because through diversity there is strength. All of these individuals choose to serve their nation, each have their own motivation to serve, and each contributes to the overall force. We recognize and respect them all equally.

@@goboldwithjoeteyattariwala Diversity is BS and dangerous. Look at USA today and increasingly Europe. I say well done to individuals who wish to serve, their ethnicity doesn't matter
