I was with my dad in the late '90s, when I helped him choose a USP Tactical. We went shooting a number of times over the years and always took it along. In 2009, I inherited it. From day one, right out of the box until today: zero malfunctions. I trust it fully.
I just happened to pick one of these up a couple weeks back and it is already my favorite pistol. The o-ring is actually there to provide a tighter lock up with the barrel and slide to improve accuracy. The competition models such as the USP Expert, Elite, and Match have one o-ring as well.
I own 2 of these.. The O ring on the barrel is to tighten the barrel/slide relationship to help increase accuracy, essentially making it a match barrel/match trigger gun.
I own one too and it’s by far the most capable and heavy duty handgun that I own (and I own 20+). Just out of curiosity, why do you own 2? These aren’t the most wallet-friendly pistols out there. Id understand owning two usp tactical models chambered for different cartridges, but two usp tactical .45s?
The O-ring is to increase accuracy. It centers the barrel in the slide exactly the same way every time. I've added O-ringed barrels to a couple of my pistols in the past, and the accuracy always improved. I used to have a USP .45 Compact. It was a great pistol, and I especially liked the DA/SA trigger system with cocked & locked capability. That's how I usually carried it, but I liked being able to put it in DA mode when appropriate.
2:04 The USP .45 Tactical manual suplement states that the O-ring is there so that the barrel and the slide locks with each other the same after each cycle of the slide. The barrel not locking consistently is a problem with many pistols utilizing John Browning's tilting barrel locking system and hurts the pistols inherit accuracy slightly. This can be solved by making a pistol with very tight tolerances (like a Les Baer 1911) or using other methods like using the O-ring HK did with different USP models. If I remember correctly the USP Tactical, Expert and Elite all have the O-ring. The USP .45 Tactical is one of my favorite pistols. Especially fun with a suppressor.
I’ve owned a USP compact 45 stainless, a P30, a VP9sk and now another P30L. Wish I had kept them all but they really are sweet tools and I keep coming back.
As others have stated, the O ring (near the barrel’s muzzle) is designed to enhance accuracy, by reducing slide-to-barrel “play.” One way to conceptualize this is to consider a precisely fitted 1911A1’s barrel bushing, which is similarly designed to ensure fine accuracy by reducing barrel play. Incidentally, I have owned a .45 ACP USP Tacical for 15+ years, and it is a GREAT autoloader, which actually feels and carries a lot smaller than it is.
I have a USP .45, one of the best guns out there. Completely reliable, controllable, accurate and comfortable to shoot. Only draw back I have found has nothing to do with the gun itself but more to the availability of accessories and mags are expensive.
Looks like such a sweeeet pistol! I've owned the Sigs 220 and 227, both were amazing. My current 45 is a CZ 97BD and being a CZ fan I can't see myself getting rid of it, it's such a love machine lol! But I'd love to score an HK in 45 some day, especially this one. Took me a while to warm up to HK's as I wasn't too impressed with the P30 I rented and VP9 I owned. But I now have a USP40C police trade-in that, to me, is a beauty in every way, holster wear and all!
Love my USP Match in .45 ACP. Also my Expert in 9x19. In Germany the USP, even the more expensive Elite, Expert and Tactical, counts more as a cheaper pistol. Most sportshooters buy pistols in the price range of 2000 € plus, like SIG X5 / X6, Custom 1911´s and so on. It´s because we are limited in the number of pistols we are allowed to possess. Everything is registered. Buying and selling comes with a lot of bureaucracy. So, most people try to buy the best they can get, after they get their permission to buy one. :-(. I have also an old S&W 669, buyed for 120 €. If I want to buy a new pistol, I have to sell her, but my heart belongs to that gun, because it was my first real handgun. The cost for the bureaucracy were higher than the price of the gun, and I´ve shot ammo worth more than five times the price of the gun through her barrel. Ridiculous :-D
What's ironic is, like Canada, Germany makes some of the best pistols in the world, yet they don't let their own "citizens" own them..! Personally-speaking, if I lived in Germany, I'd get one of those guns with multiple barrel/caliber setups. They count as only one gun, but by swapping barrels, you can shoot different calibers. A 1911 .45ACP pistol with a .22LR upper assembly would be a good combination to have.
I still like this more than the HK45. The USP .45 Tactical is definitely not only my favorite HK pistol, but also my favorite pistol in .45 ACP. The FN FNX-45 Tactical is a close second. The only thing I think the USP .45 Tactical needs is a rail adapter for a good flashlight-laser sights (personally, I want to see it with the Surefire XLV2 when it comes out to go all operator), and a good set of tritium suppressor-height night-sights.
You can buy an aftermarket picatinny rail adapter. I got one made by GG&G. Using one will make finding a holster pretty tough though. I use a blackhawk omnivore holster using a surefire X300. It's a badass setup!
Back about 6 1/2 years ago I go into my lgs and low and behold there is a usp 45 tactical used in like new condition for $800 and a usp 45c used in new condition for $650. I bought the usp 45c because I knew cc would be a lot more comfortable with it, but every now and then I regret not getting that dang on tactical. Plus it had extras. The usp series are tanks, workhorses, go to war, no compromise pistols. I just wish the da trigger on the da/sa variants was a little lighter
Huge pistol! Love it. I personally like the USP 45. I can't believe because this pistol has a threaded barrel it is considered an assault weapon and deemed illegal in CT. I would love to have added a Mk23 to the collection. From guys that I've talked to that have used the USP 45 in the field, they state its one of the most reliable 45s ever made.
I was feeling the itch for a 45 acp and got a great deal on a smith and wesson m&p 45. $450 with one mag and no box. 10 rounds mags. Real soft shooting pistol for the money.
Nice video, I went with the HK45. I haven't shot the USP, but after buying the P30 on a whim I decided to go with the HK45 for the similarities. The only downfall to the HK45 is the decocker is integrated with the slide safety, very easy to decock when drawing from your holster. All in all, I've never shot an H&K I didn't like. Wait for it, here come the haters!
1 million times yes!!!! I couldn't agree with you more; I own the Fnx-9 and want to buy the FNX-45, There is isn't a better firing more versatile pistol in my opinion. Not only does it fire any type of the crummiest ammo without flaw. It can be carried cocked & locked or de-cocked or de-cocked and locked . I can't think of any pistol that has more DA/SA options.
Brian Mumford FNS is probably best striker fired weapon; I love the FNX for the hammer; I like to see hammers. But if I was going striker fired I would stick with FNH. They are the last company John Browning ever worked for and they seem to have carried on that tradition.
The O Ring is to keep the lockup tight. To keep that match grade accuracy as good as possible, without the metal from the barrel being worn and losing that accuracy. It needs to be replaced every 20,000-30,00 round depending on how worn it is.
The USP Tactical is like a Mk23, but at 1/2 the price. The only main difference is the separate decocking lever on the Mk23. I have one of these pistols, very accurate and easy to shoot.
My brother used to own one of these and he would agree that the FNP 45 tactical will shoot circles around this gun for less money. I am a HK freak and it hurts me to admit but in my opinion it out shoots the Mk 23 as well. we shot them side by side at the shooting range.
Great pistol. My standard USP 45 is awesome! Being a rifle guy, this is the only pistol I plan to own and that says alot considering all pistols in the market. I would of gotten a Tactical if California didn't ban pistols with threaded barrels.
+tfr51 Actually there are hicap mags for the USP series. I'm not sure about the 40, but I know there's a 30 rounnder for the USP in 9mm, as well as an 18 rounder.
The O-ring is an add-on that isn't super important. It's so the barrel has a tighter fit to the slide. VERY accurate with and without. O-ring is replaceable in the event it comes off.
Great review. Very helpful. I had one of these many years ago and I still kick myself for selling it-hopefully I will have another one of these days. 😎
I have the USP 9MM...expensive? Yes. However, I own plenty other pistols now and that Hk, and my Sig 226 has been my go too pistols. Both are really great pieces. I have a Colt Python also...that thing is a beast of a revolver
I love all of my USPs, and my Mark 23. But one of my favorite HKs is the USP .40 Tactical. They do NOT make a .40 Tactical, but they used to. If you check the website, the only USP Tactical pistols are 9mm and .45. HK could decide to start making them again. They stopped making the Mark 23 for a while, and brought it back.
I own the USP 45ACP, not the tactical. I put a picatinny rail on it so accept a Streamlight. I had to replace a faulty recoil stream, but otherwise a solid well built 12+1 gun!
Can’t decide on if I should get this or the MK23 Socom as I think both are pretty rad. I can’t really afford both as I need to upgrade my computer next year as well.
Now that is one cool looking HK pistol. Sure do like the adjustable sights and it holds 12 round of .45 ACP. However, that price is around my price point for buying a 1911 and I sure do like shooting 1911's. Cool video and what is the possibility of doing another video with a suppressor on the HK?
The O ring: As the bullet leaves the gun, the slide "hesitates" over the o ring as it comes back. This gives added accuracy. If the slide came back too quickly, the barrel could cant upwards. And now you know!!
I have the 9mm version, upgraded from a Glock. Luckily I bought it for $550 being that it was three months old with less than 50 rounds through it. Pawn shops are great...
thanks for the vid Sootch. I have shot a USP 45 Compact before and the USPs are definitely great pistols, but I just can't bring myself to spend over $1000 for a polymer frame pistol, with mags that routinely cost $60 or more each. they just seem arrogantly overpriced to me. If I'm spending that much on a pistol it'd be a custom 1911. But to each his own I suppose. Thanks again.
Not to contradict, but I've always read USP = Universal Service Pistol . Could be like and Oldsmobile 442 that has different meanings of the 4-4-2 based on who the info comes from.
It's hard to find H&k firearms and magazines in the store in Connecticut🙄🙄🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️. I can order them and have them shipped to the store but I'm impatient👌🏿 so I stick to Sig and Glocks. I have the hkvp9 and love it. I wish the stores would carry more of h&k products
Great video as always. Have you shot it suppressed yet? I just grabbed an Osprey 45 and I'm looking at this pistol for my first suppressed 45. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.
What I mean when I say that is the build quality, there is no comparison, the usp is a tank, beast, whatever you want to call it and as accurate as a lot of high end 1911's and rated for +p+.You can mount lights and lasers on the usp, but cost more. 3 more rounds is nice, but that isn't going to mean much in a hand gun.
The HK45t and USP45t both are built better than the FN. Have all 3. Oops had all 3. Don't have the FN anymore. It was nice but the HK's are just built better IMO
+MVrockersPS3 The three extra rounds don't mean as much compared to the reliability difference. What good is more ammo if you have malfunctions. The USP is the most tested pistol of all time.
I saw one online for $1100. I was planning on getting it...once I'm old enough XD www.impactguns.com/hk-usp-tactical-45acp-12rds-m704501t-642230242029.aspx
Max Anderson: I entirely agree. Blackpoint’s holster is SUPERB, it fit my .45 Tactical precisely, it holds the weapon most securely, the quality clearly is outstanding, it wasn’t overly expensive, and their customer service is excellent.
I was with my dad in the late '90s, when I helped him choose a USP Tactical. We went shooting a number of times over the years and always took it along. In 2009, I inherited it. From day one, right out of the box until today: zero malfunctions. I trust it fully.

Looks like I am stuck with my USP 40. To bad they don't have Hi Capacity mags like the Gloks.
3:30. That's 14 rounds not 12. lol. Great review, torn between this and the HK45T.
+sootch00.... how much do you think is one of these are being sold in the US???
I saw one online for $1100. I was planning on getting it...once I'm old enough XD

Great review
Beautiful gun.
Only thing I've never been crazy about HK's is that they have a 2X4 for a slide lock.
Do you know of any after market mags for the usp 45?
I love mine, but good luck finding a holster...
Max Anderson how about I'm lefty and have light attached?
Cristiano Ronaldo Well you're fucked then
Max Anderson: I entirely agree. Blackpoint’s holster is SUPERB, it fit my .45 Tactical precisely, it holds the weapon most securely, the quality clearly is outstanding, it wasn’t overly expensive, and their customer service is excellent.
Vedder holster makes the best ones I found iwb an owb
I’m a lefty and had a local guy use my pistol for a kydex mold. I have a great holster now.
