    I can't believe it took me this long to do a video on the governor springs on a Tecumseh mower. I replace a manual throttle and do a demo of governor springs on a Craftsman mower.

    I have the same throttled engine on a Craftsman edger that I bought cheap because it wouldn't start. The jet nut was clogged but the carb linkages were also connected all wrong or disconnected altogether. The end of this video was a great help in sorting out where the linkages connected.

    Nice one, Bruce. Most owners don't know just how fast you can screw up those throttle controls by hooking up the springs and control arms to the wrong to the places. I've had to refer to the mechanics manual many times times when i didn't pay proper attention during disassembly.

    I'm glad you made a video showing how that throttle plate hooks up, because I got this Craftsman Blower/Vac Chipper and for whatever reason the previous owner removed the throttle plate, most likely because he put a new carb on. Luckily I have a few spare throttle plates. However on this machine it also had the kill switch on the throttle plate, I also have a spare kill wire tab to hook on it, but the guy wired in his own messy kill switch and one of the wires is not hooked up still so I have to try and figure out exactly where all the wires went. I know the green ground came from the coil and went to the throttle plate and I have a feeling this other black wire coming from the back of the machine that is disconnected also goes right to the throttle plate where the green ground goes or somewhere near it. Something like that. This guy really had it all boogered up, I wonder why he didn't just put the throttle plate back on when he replaced the carb, maybe it broke like the one you had and he did not have a spare, so he went to town re-wiring everything. Parts direct is great, because you can get most Sears machines manuals, however this particular machine has no manual for it on their website.
    Anyway this video was very helpful, thank you.

    Bruce, I've been hunting for this information for three days, Tecumseh TVS115 57004c, 4.5 hp Murray lawn mower. I have the original manual but it doesn't show the linkage. I have the two linkages reversed in the holes on the governor arm so I'll correct that .
    Thanks for posting this.

    Good video. I just came across a junker 1990 Craftsman eager- 1 and I'm trying g to get it working. The carburetor is physically in good condition after cleaning it with brake cleaner along with the priming bulb removal and area. I need to play with the springs. I took pictures prior to removal and reinstalled like it was. Based on your video the springs on mine were incorrectly installed from the get go prior, to me finding it. Thank you.

    I have a 16 year old Toro Tecumseh engine self-propelled lawn mower. I think I messed a spring up or something. I replaced the carburetor and flushed out all the trash in my gas tank and got new no-ethanol gas. Still getting spark but dies immediately.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  5 років тому

      When the governor springs are in right you should be able to feel tension on the throttle butterfly actuator. That is the one with the holes in it for the throttle rods. If it runs for a few seconds I would think it needs more fuel Have you sprayed starter fluid into the carb opening??? That should give it a shot. Also I have seen the gasket on the intake partially close off going into the motor too----- if on crooked. Fiddle with it. If it is sputtering you are close.

      @@BrucesShop Everything looks good. I rechecked. No crooked gaskets, I replaced my carburetor (same carburetor I replaced the original one with last year
      HIFROM Carburetor Carb kit with 36905 740083A Air Filter Fuel Filter for Tecumseh 640350 640303 LEV105 LEV120 Toro 20016 20017 20018 Worked great until I tried to clean the carburetor a few weeks ago and didn't have the right wrench handy and I tried to take the screw out with a pair of pliers and broke it. I reordered the same kit. My spark plug had carbon deposits on it really bad...not sure if that was normal or not and there was white powdery residue in the exhaust manifold or whatever that part is that comes off the carburetor and hooks to the muffler. I did have trash in my gas tank and in my gas can. I flushed them both out with denatured alcohol and let them dry out before refilling with fresh no-ethanol gas. I changed the spark plug and air filter. The lawnmower is doing EXACTLY the same thing as it was doing before. My fuel line is not clogged. I've worked on this for the past 2 days and I'm about to give up. My linkage is installed correctly. I even tried adjusting it both ways. Always the same results. Starts, dies in about 2 seconds.I use starter fluid to get it started. The first time I put the new carburetor on, I took it off and made sure the holes in the screw thing were all clear and I sprayed everything with carb cleaner for good measure. It starts right up. Any other ideas? There is tension on the actruator thigy the throttle rod is attached to.

    Hey Bruce. I've got an issue with the governor on a Tecumseh H25. I don't think it's in the case at all. I did the adjustment (loosen screw, throttle full, snug back up) and it still wants to pull past 3500 rpm's. This is from a 1970 Bonanza Scout that I have to have governed for my boy to ride (minibike). The only reason why I think it's still in there is that when I reversed the adjustment (just to see) it took off like a prom dress. I can post a video if it would help. Thanks.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  3 роки тому +1

      Ok Your problem is the governor set up. sometimes the little hooks on the rods can catch or you have the 2 different rods transposed and they need to be redone. The one with the spring goes on the lower hole and the solid one goes on the upper hole of the governor arm coming out of the engine. The solid one goes to the throttle on the carb. Make sure the one with the spring goes to the movable throttle with the red lever. Something may be jammed. Don't hesitate to take the throttle assembly off and start over. When they work it is truly cool. Look at spot 8:11 in the video

I don't see how it would run without it?? I bought this from a relative that had not used it for several years so when it did not run very well I ordered a replacement carbeurator and now I see there must be a linkage missing. Hi Bruce,tried another carb no dice,so decided to put old one back on and sell it for parts,but after I put it on it started right up and ran like a champ. Can't figure that out.

      Maybe an intake issue the cleared up during assembly.

    Hey Bruce! I need your help, I have an old Power Back 5250 generator that I replaced the Carb with a new one, filter and shutoff valve cleaned the gas tank out and spark plug but It still sputters and backfires. What could be the trouble?Please help me my Canadian Friend.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  7 років тому

      If it is backfiring I would check the valve tappet clearance. If the intake valve if open at all will cause a fire back to the carb. I am not an expert but that is the next thing I would check.

      Not when set properly. The governor hold the throttle back to about 3200 RPM's if there is no manual throttle. Maximum RPM will blow up the engine in less than a minute.
