Creating a Fashion Image using the Westcott Optical Spot

- Today I'm going to share with you how to create a bold and eye catching fashion image using only 2 lights and my brand new Optical Spot modifier that I designed in conjunction with Westcott.
If you follow my work you know that I love two things - bold graphic imagery and the color red...and this shoot has both! 😆
As mentioned above, we'll be taking the Optical Spot for a spin during this shoot.
What this modifier lets you do is created tiny “slices” of light through a focusing lens and gobo (go between). So if I wanted to light just a portion of a subject, I have ultimate control with this modifier.
You you might be thinking to yourself “what’s the difference between this and a snoot?” While both can help create a focused light on the face, a snoot generally is just one shape whereas the Optical Spot can create a tighter pocket of light as well as different shapes and waaaay more control as you’ll see in the video.
This is only a 2 light setup, so the main light is going to be focusing a shape on the model's face while letting the rest of her body go into shadow.
My second strobe is going to be a bare bulb with red gel to light the background. I like using my Fashion Gray background which is more of a neutral gray that really shows off the color when I add a gel.
I love creating images like this, it ticks all the boxes for my style and how I like to build a scene. The Optical Spot really helps create that interesting slice of light on the subject’s face and the DIY headpiece for that bold graphic look.

Please help me get that many lol.
You are nothing short of brilliant in your blend of innovation (your own light!) and simplicity-only-possible-with-imagination. Watching your videos is not just an informative experience-it’s a privilege watching such a talent push herself to new, even more extraordinary levels. Thank you for making us participants in your artistry.
Wow, thank you!
Great accessory, This would be great for a headshot with jewelry also.
I TRY to binge Lindsay's videos in the background on my shop TV's while I work. Her photography and teaching style are so compelling, however, that I keep finding myself staring at the screen instead of working. This vid was no exception.
Love that!
Lindsey is always top notch.
Ok ok Lindsay! I'll get one 👍🏾 Love it!
Ooh! congratulations on the modifier collaboration with Westcott Lindsay!! That's super awesome! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, tips and creativity too. It's priceless. You inspire me to try different stuff
You are so welcome!
Alwasy inspiring to watch you!
Thanks so much!
I love this concept. Could be very sci fi
Great concept. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Lindsay, funny story but seeing your studio made me sell my house and buy an old huge property where I now have the space I always dreamt of having.. It was a very hard thing to do to sell our previous beautifully finished house and I had decided not to sell and buy but then again a night went by and I watched one of your video’s again and thought ‘damn, I can really also have a studio like that’.. So half an hour later, beginning of this year, I called back the broker and told him we had a deal..so your influence goes beyond what you would think, you changed our life’s 😊😉 Anyway, I looked for the optical spot here in the Benelux (Europe) but can’t seem to find it just yet. Will it be available worldwide?
This is so awesome, thank you Lindsay! Your teaching style is excellent and the lighting recipe is such a great idea. I just picked up the optical spot and already I'm having a ton of fun using it.
Thanks so much! Glad that you're enjoying the optical spot! :)
Absolutely Love this!
You are so creative! Thank you so much
Love this light modifier so much. You designed a great product!
Beautiful! Happy New Year!
Fantastic Image Lindsay Adler, love how you are showing how a Fashion Photograph can be created without Fashion! Thanks for sharing so much through your wonderful channel so we can all learn and apply while watching you work and create. Happy and Healthy New Year 2022 to you and your Team!
Love this Lindsay, will be trying something similar with what I’ve got.
Amazing as always❤️
You are absolutely brilliant! You always inspire me to be better. Thank you. You may have just pushed me to get strobes!! WOW!
I have a question for you. Will your Westcott Optical Spot work with "Neewer Vision 4 300Ws 2.4G Li-ion Battery Powered Outdoor Strobe Cordless Monolight"? Thank you in advance.
@@GatherAcademy Sorry I dont know what that is. Can you clarify? This comes in Profoto, Bowens, broncolor, elinchrom mounts. and balker in the future.
@@lindsayadlerphoto I have Neewer Strobes that I have yet to learn to use. You have inspired me to learn. With that said Im very new to this arena of lighting. What Im getting is your Optical Spot light fits one one of these, "Profoto, Bowens, broncolor, elinchrom mounts". Then that mount would attach to my Strobe light??? Sorry for all the questions!
This is amazing
This must be a new way to take photos in the studio.
Great fashion/fine art video. I bought one of you optical spots and it works great. As good as my $2,500 Elinchrom Zoom Spot projector which I've had for 10+ years.
great video ! love it ... ;)
Thank you ❤
Lindsay, these in the 'movie' world are also termed dado lights, and the accessories, "gobo's"; look like these have been in existance, for moving pictures for a while now, but NEW for Photography, as a "still light", as we are more used to 'flash' as a non- natural light source.
I hate to disagree for you, but in the movie world the BRAND is dedo lights, its not what they are called. They aren't new to photography either-- they have been around for many decades-- Profoto and Broncolor both had them in the past 10-15 years. The difference is that mine is affordable, includes many features in one, and Is an attachment rather than a dedicated head.
Amazing
also, Love the series you did for "v_flat world"-photography wars. great battle, but the model did most of it, and that dress- she looked like an angel in it!!, but loved the flash work you did in it, would be nice if you explained how an "on-location" rig was set up, what lights you use, and what circumstances you would use this flash over natural light.
Well, to be fair I sourced the model and the dress. I have a class on location lighting on Creativelive... check it out! Location lighting 101.
thanks alot Sir
I'm a woman in case you didn't notice. :P
You killed it Lindsay, is there a mount for Bowens?
yep!
This one is amazing. I want to try this. But i only have one b10 profoto and optical spot. Could you please suggest some continuous light for background so i can buy it . Thanks
Изумительно
Stunning as usual, Lindsay! Quick question. Why did you choose the Savage Fashion Gray background & not a Savage Red?
Sometimes I think when I gel things the results look more 'luminous' if you know what I mean. More of a glow.
plus it gives me versatility to change my mind-- if its up there and I'm like... oh I wish I had blue... I can change it.
Curious how many stops of light the optical snoot chews up in comparison to the Godox model?
I've never compared the two. It more depends on the lens you are using in the front (ours are interchangeable). But to your question, sorry I dont have a direct comparison with the two kit lenses.
Is this product available with a Bowen’s mount? Are curved flags available?
Yes it is available with a Bowen's mount. You can check all of the available accessories through the links in the description.
Interesting light modifier but not available for my system Speedotron.
I would reach out to Westcott and ask if one of the other mounts might work with it.
What C-stand are you using that has a roller base? If you don't remember can you recommend what you would buy if you were re-doing this shot and wanted a rollar C-stand.
Thanks
I use an avenger roller stand. if you go over to Adorama's UA-cam page I have an entire video about the stands I use!
Savage
I also use Flashpoint (formally Impact)
Does it fit only for Profoto flash?
Profoto, Bowens, broncolor, elinchrom so far!
@@lindsayadlerphoto Thank you very much. Happy New Year!
The good thing about this lady being so popular is all the hack photographers follow this advice like robots, making clients gravitate towards me. lol IG photographers eat this nonsense up when they can't even take a great simple photo.
Glad that you consider it nonsense...maybe go watch something else then instead of trolling my channel?
No one “gravitates toward you.” You are not a celestial body. If someone hires you, it's because they happened to notice you and liked your work, not because someone else watched a UA-cam video you didn't like. In reality, you're just some sad insecure little person talking shit about someone who runs a six to seven figure studio in NJ/NY, has a huge creative team, a full staff, constant commercial jobs, and STILL shares all her techniques. If you don't like her style, WATCH SOMEONE ELSE. She's not stopping you.
