Sarah! I'm an amateur succulent caretaker, but my current succulents have survived so far. Here's some info on caring for succulents:
From my experience and research, succulents are like cacti such that they do not need to be watered as often. When you water succulents, make sure to soak the soil (NOT spray) because spraying the succulents will make the roots thin and weak; they like to absorb lots of water at one time. I usually water once a week during the summertime and once every 1-2 weeks during the winter. Also make sure that the pot can drain and get succulent/cacti-specific soil (usually they contain perlite, which helps with drainage) because you don't want water to pool in the pot; the excess water that stays in the pot will promote root rot. Make sure to give succulents enough sunlight! I live in an area with little sunlight in the winter so I have a UV lamp for my plants. Also, temperature is another thing to consider. A lot of succulents thrive in 65-70 F (18-21 C) temperature, but some species can go down to about 30-40 F (-1-4 C). Since Korea can get really cold, I would avoid placing your succulents near windows during cold season because they'll get too cold and wither. Sorry for the long post, but hope that helps!

I just got some small succulents and the instructions that came with them side to give them 2 oz once a month, I’ve also read that you shouldn’t use hard water to water them with. I also suffer from an anti-green thumb (kill all my plants). Except Bob he’s been with me for about 8 months.

Hi Kyuho and Sarah! First, congratulations to Kyuho’s mom! What a huge accomplishment 👏🏼.
Second, I am also a notorious plant killer and succulents are the only plants I can keep alive. The most common problem is overwatering. Does your pot have little holes in the bottom? The water must be able to drain out of the soil to avoid root rot. The soil should be dry between waterings. They also like bright direct light. Since your plant did well above your fridge, I would keep them there! Moving them around the house stresses them out. Good luck and keep us updated in the Summer when they will really thrive! 🌵

Seeing you both talking about plants and buying new ones was so exciting and inspiring. Is it just me or as you grow older your interest in plants grow? I wish I knew tips for cactuses but I never had one. Hoping for the best, Sarah! I think these ones will make it! I am so happy that lady gave you so many ideas and the pompons, which were the cutest. We are a bit in sync because I bought a new plant this week too :) It is a small fern (I am so in love with it) and I also repotted an old plant so I was so excited to see your plants! Keep us updated on their progress! Please send my congratulations to your mom, Khuyo! I am in awe of the effort and talent she has. Wishing her all of the success on her new role as a profesor! Have a great week guys!

  • @balljointeddoll

Those greenhouses look wonderful! Kyuho's plant is a Haworthia (possibly Haworthia reinwardtii or Haworthia coarctata), a type of succulent. Your cacti look etiolated Sarah, meaning that the new growth is thin and stretched as the plant isn't getting enough light. Different genus of cacti and succulents have varying requirements (if you can ID each of your plants and research the individual requirements this will be really helpful), but generally they need bright indirect sunlight (a window ledge for example), if that isn't possible you can find small grow lamps that are reasonably priced. They don't like to be over potted, so plant them in the smallest pot possible with a little room around the roots for new growth. When repotting, remove all the old soil (or as much as possible) from the roots, the old soil can become compacted and prevent the plant from growing and absorbing water. Pests (bugs) can also be hiding between the roots. Sadly I think that the soil the lady sold you may be problematic over time, it looks very water retentive. Plant's grown in a bright greenhouse will have different requirements to those grown in an apartment, so while the soil might be perfectly suited to her, it will very sadly likely cause your plants to rot and die. Also, the decorative stones on the top of the pot will drastically reduce how quickly the water in the soil dries and evaporates, meaning that it isn't suited to very water retentive soils. If you have time, do a quick online search which will tell you the various options available to amend the soil to make it less water retentive and faster drying. I really hope this helps! Don't be disheartened, once you find the method that works for you and your growing environment they are easy and lovely plants to grow. It can take a little trial and error to get it right. Ah, also, some of those cacti for sale are Euphorbia. They are sold as cacti but are actually succulents which produce a toxic sap, highly irritant to humans (can cause respiratory problems and blindness) and toxic to animals (Beemo). They are sold as cacti in the UK also. Please feel free to message me if you have questions, I'd be happy to help if I can, or point you in the right direction. I hope you both have a wonderful week!

    • @balljointeddoll
      @balljointeddoll 6 років тому

Oh, a tip to help you identify how water retentive your soil is and to avoid overwatering; weigh the pot before and after watering. Only water when the soil is completely dry and back at its start weight. Also, after re-potting always wait a week before watering to allow the plants roots time to heal and avoid root rot. I hope that helps!

Thanks so much for sharing your time at that AMAZING greenhouse!!! I’m so happy for you that you now have a resource to learn to take care of your beautiful new plants and that real surviver the old one😂😂. Don’t feel bad, I love houseplants too and have a number of indoor Bonsai BUT I kill African violets EVERY TIME!!😱😫. Congratulations to your Mom!!! +Virginia Glass I want a Bonsai SOOO bad, but they’re quite pricey and I honestly don’t trust myself to keep something that expensive alive 😅 Funny enough, my mom had an African violet plant for about 20 years before it died, and my parents still have a small orange tree they brought back from Florida on their honeymoon. Needless to say I didn’t inherit that gene 😒

omg, so many succulents, i am obsessed. I have bunch of them, that's only flowers who can survive in my home :D if i would have more sunny windows i would have more of them, just in Lithuania winters are really dark and some of succulent's lost their beautiful shape.
For succulent need lots of sun, good drainage and water 1 in two-thee weeks (depends on your climate, in very hot and dry climate you have to water once a week). In the beginning if hard to decide how often to water, you can see if plant starts wrinkle then give them water. Don't leave water in the plate. For these plants (the same as cactus) is better to starve a bit, than water too much. Their roots are sensitive. After replanting don't water for a week.
If you break a leave, leave it for few days, heal it's wound and then put in the soil, you will have more plants.

I have no tips for succulents because I'm a plant killer myself, but as a fellow cat owner I would say make sure you google every indoor plant/tree you're thinking of purchasing because a lot of them are poisonous to cats.

During college my roommate and I had succulents! Usually we kept them near the window at all times so it would constantly get sunlight (even minimal sunlight is fine). Every 2 weeks we watered them until the water seeped through the bottom of the pot and then we just placed it back near the window. If you want them to grow bigger you need to re pot them!

Hi Sarah and Kyuho! To take care of your cactuses and succulents, if you stick your finger in the soil about 1" deep and it is dry, then it is time to lightly water. it's easy yet annoying at the same time with succulents, the trick is to 'only water them when the soil is completely dry'. Soak it completely till the water drains out from the bottom, be sure to empty the gathered water. check if the soil is still moist about a week later, if it is, leave it for another week for the soil to completely dry before watering again. The watering schedule changes through out the year depending on the humidity / or where you keep your plants :>

This is the first year I have kept my potted succulents alive over winter. I had to put them all in the guest bathtub to keep them away from my 4 cats! They live outside on the deck most of the year but they usually die about midwinter from neglect and lack of sunlight indoors. I usually forget to water them when they’re inside. 😿

Sarah I'm so sorry but your old cactus seems already dying. healthy cactus is green and firm when you touch it. if it soft or some parts turned to grey/brown and if it has a scar, it means it's dying. but your new babies looks very healthy and beautiful! hope you take care of it well!

OMG this is the second time I've written this, this week. (believe it or not other youtubers Wah and Weylie asked as well.) GET YOURSELF a BOOK/Plant guide!!! Then you will be able to teach yourself. ON Amazon, there are good books on cactus and succulents by the author Terry Hewitt. Get some with photos as you can re-pot, plant, trim, etc. easier with these as a guide when you don't have the plant lady there. It was nice to see a Korean Garden Center/Flower shop. That is what I do for a living, in fact, I've run several in my life, opened more of them. The company I work for has Seasonal garden centers here in the Chicagoland area, (10) and I've opened more than a few of them. I used to teach horticulture at 2 year colleges in my area, so if you love that place, you can imagine how *I* feel about what I do! Just remember, when you get a cacti and it grows spines, then what will you do if Bemo rubs against it and pokes his eye? That's a good hefty vet bill right there. Stick with succulents and NO spines when you have a feline. They can't help themselves looking and marking their scent on things, and I got rid of more than a few nice plants when I moved in with my second husband and we had cats. (still have "Lil Herman"! He's doing fine and he's almost 16 this April 21!) xoxo from Chicago!

Ahnyeongasayo! (hope that spelling is alright!) looking forward to sundays for your new video. Question: have you ever met a subscriber there before? like a random meet up, maybe while you were on a mall? cafe? or a resto? how was it? I will be coming(3rd time) to Seoul this August. What places would you recommend? I have been there last year for Spring & Autumn, and you guys helped me map out my itinerary. So for this coming summer in seoul, hope i could again get some tips from you. Thanks in advance! ✌️

OMFG I love this video becuase I legit have a jungle in my room 😂😂 I have a lot of succulents cause I love them and theyre easy to care for ,what I normally do is, only water them when the soil is dry, like ill stick my finger in and see if the soil is dry and I put them near a window or somewhere with filtered light when its hot, hope this helps :) , and congrats to your mum Kyuho 🎉🎉
