Very impressive piece regardless, love seeing the true destructive nature of such 40k weapons emphasised.

Cool effect - love the concept I just don't think the armor would take this much punishment - the seals would probably give out rather than the armor itself. Still very cool.
Plz Games Workshop, make this a kit! I want to run a 10 man squad of marines with heads fully exploding in my next game. Jk, really nice video tho! The result looks great!
Amazing execution! With the bolter though, because it essentially fires APHE (armor piercing high explosive) which pierces the target, then detonates, I would have thought that the blast of the explosion would project outwards in a sphere from the point where the bolt stopped in the marine. Not blowing out the back like an rpg would, which fires a shaped charge which blows up on contact, firing a jet of superheated metal that then goes on top pierce the armor and act like a molten shotgun firing inside the target. I think it would be equal parts funny/cool for this to be done where the space marine helmet is blown off the body like a tank’s turret blowing off the hull when the ammo load goes off.
APHE explodes in a cone not a sphere, the penetration of the armor and the inner components of the target heavily influence the round’s reaction. This explosion is very accurate to what a real munition like this exploding would simulate
@@smoldoggy1005 APHE explosive fillers are not generally directed. APHE explodes in a "cone" primarily due to the velocity of the shell, not because the explosive filler is directed. What you're seeing with the explosion's "cone" is a sphere projected/stretched forwards due to the filler's existing velocity. You can see this in action in a simulation here: ua-cam.com/video/EtcRMThYZHg/v-deo.html&ab_channel=SYSimulations you can see the sphere of the explosive filler flying forward. TL:DR I was assuming that a combination of ceramite ablative + adamantium armor and a space marine's natural toughness/density was just about halting the bolter round inside of them as it went off. If we're to go even more in depth, the bolt would penetrate the space marine's frontal armor and then the front of their solid-plate ribcage, and explode. This would mean the explosive filler (of a .75 caliber shell, not too much filler in something that size) would have to blow through both the space marine's rear solid-plate ribcage/spine and rear armor. And on top of all of that, a primaris marine has metal-infused tendons, meaning there's a relatively elastic layer of dense metal fiber that the bolt will be surrounded by as well.
My irritation that you chose an Ultramarine for this is warring with the fact that this is an amazing job. It would just look better in green, or yellow, or black.... : D
hmm... I think they were no name honestly. I got them from a hobby shop in a ziploc bag haha. Go to a hobby store that sells planes and ships and stuff like that. Theyll for sure have them
Bolter are nowhere near this powerful at this in game at least. It would take 18 bolter shots to kill a marine. This is firstborn. A primaris bolt rifle only takes 12 shots. Be cool if they where anywhere close to as awesome as you portray them.

Me seeing a Space Marine getting blasted by the bolter: Oh no! Me seeing that he was an Ultramarine: Anyways... Edit: It's just a joke. The Emperor did not protect him this time.
The talent with the detail is nice but it should be more flesh, bone, brain matter and blood. I am a retired Marine 0331. Machine gunner. The mk19 makes flesh go splat. There are some incendiary versions of rounds but the normal HEDP just makes.things pop. Usually any grey/brown clouds is concrete, dirt, clay being atomized instead of a fiery explosion.
Very impressive! My only CONSTRUCTIVE criticism would be, maybe, priot to attaching the explosion, hitting the model with your airbrush from the opposite direction of the explosion with yellow to show the light reflecting off the armor/bolter. I'm SO impessed with this conversion that I hate to even mention that detail!
Sweet ☆ a real way for warhammer40k to paint your Ultramarines! Now the Salamanders could take a hit being a son of vulcan a perpetual , blood angles just go crazy, iron hands just use it as an excuse to put metal where flesh proved too weak. The imperial Fists would hide behind a fortafercacion and Raven guard would have hidden in dark shadows but those white Scars would have ridden away on their bikes having RTA's leaving the VLKA FALRYKA to face their enemies which are totally every other character in the black library now you ask how would the Dark Angels act nobody knows they're hiding from the truth ......Great build and inspiring if were doing a typical tyranid diorama with arms being blown off geanstealers !
Just awesome. One question that would be interesting for me. Is boltermunition armorpiercing? From a military standpoint it seems to me that a grenade is more of HE (High Explosive Round) Space Marines have thick armor. In the real world someone would use a antimaterial rifle with rounds based on thungsten metal. Its difficult to make a round that could pierce armor and also do high explosion. ... buts thats only the nerd in me. Love your vids ❤
Btw, if you're a commander in a combat zone you should know that pointing with your fingers is a VERY VERRRYYYY bad habit and this lil marine just showed you why 😂😂

I think the weird blood goo webbing made a really great model kind of goofy. Goofy horror can be fine, thats fun in its own way, but I feel like theres some tonal clashing going on. Nothing else about the piece said goofy horror to me (the weird grin on the guys jaw sort of? maybe). I love everything else about the model. These guys shrug off reguar bolter rounds all day so this must be some ungodly beast of a heavy bolter (Vulcan Mega Bolter? lol). Anything that blows up a demigod is horrifying in its own right.
I woulda thought an armour piercing round that detonates inside an enemy would be alot more like the Armour Piercing High Explosive rounds commonly used in WW2 for anti-armour. An RPG detonates on contact with the armour and sends a jet of copper at super sonic speeds into it, cutting through. An APHE round goes through the armour with kinetic power then detonates on a timer triggered by coming into contact with armour.
Looks more like super fast solid slug over penetration with massive inside overpressure and lots of Spalding sorta like modern apfsds round would do to a litly armored vehicle like BTR or BMP without exploding it's ammo Inside explosion would just Pop armor plating on the joints without damaging them the thing that T-series Russian tanks do when ammo is struck
stunning techniques but I personally think you went a little overboard with the sheer scale of the explosion and damage I always think of when Astartes battle armor gets penetrated by a Bolter the Armor would contain a lot of the explosion this would IMHO be comparable if this astartes is getting hit with a meltabomb or a full on AT launcher I'd say scale the explosion down by 50% at least and keep the helmet intact. If this was a Traitor guard or something ALOT less armored I'd buy this scale of destruction food for thought is also when trying to penetrate thicker and better armor you have less room in the projectile for explosives as I think is stated in the lore when you have Astartes vs Traitor marines they need to use very specialized armor penetrating ammo on both sides
I'm subscribed to a few scale model channels and had forgotten yours was the gorey one. Based off the thumbnail I should've remembered, but I didn't so I watched this with my ten year old. Oops..
@@MaverickNicolson your dark gory conversions are a breath of fresh air in the hobby. Very refreshing. Thanks for this mate.
I think your work is absolutely superb, very great way to show off how these sci-fi weapons interact with entities hit. But as a nitpick, a bolter round wouldn't shred a space marine in the same way it would anything less tough. Space marines are super soldiers with ridiculous toughness and their ceramite power armour is thick enough to prevent these bolter rounds piercing so far into the armour. Or at least not right with the first couple of shots. The effect we're seeing is more like what it'd do to an ork or eldar guardian. Still cool as hell though, I do love to see Ultramarines explode.
Life happens! Until I can sustain myself off of the hobby, I need to honor other responsibilities. Plus its all been a bit of a steep learning curve etc
Since explosions are usually hotter towards the inside, and cool as they expand; would it not make more sense to start with a white explosion and layer up with yellow, orange, red, and into brownish black (that way the deepest recesses are the brightest)? As it stands now, the deepest recesses appear red, highlighted up to yellow, with “smoke” on the ends. Or was this a conscious decision to simply create a yellow base to glue the marine’s blue helmet to?
Beautiful execution and using the printed explosion alongside model fragments is doable and magnificently violent. I really makes sense to do a violently eradicated version of my dupe heroes/characters to celebrate what the dice do to them every ruddy battle
I was just enjoying your video when i noticed you use the exact same printer as I do! I've kinda put that part of the hobby on hiatus because I cant figure out the settings to get a clean detailed print. could you please share some info on how you use your photon? Im really not that knowledge on the ins and outs of 3d printing
lol of course. Carpenter Brut has been one of my favorite artists for a while now. Gost is great too. Perturbator is hit or miss for me but lately ive been into Rezz and Deathpact
according to the night lords trilogy specifically blood reaver, the standard bolter is not that good at popping space marine warplate, for example talos and first claw charge head on into third claws bolters and successfully manage to close the distance into gladius range (they do sustain pretty heavy damage but they dont get torn apart or anything) later on when excecuting the leader of third claw talos tells him to "remove your helm" so he can be sure that he will actually kill him with anathema, gotta remember that the bolter was never designed to be used on astartes whereas power swords, mauls, thunderhammers and gladiai where.
The Carl Gustav is a recoilless gun. It looks like a bazooka but actually shoots massive bullets that look like rockets. Only one of those bullets is also rocket propelled.
Isn't power armor at its thickest point (chestplate) supposed to protect against a bolter shot though? I am pretty sure it is. Because otherwise it doesn't have much point in wearing in at all.
I think the Meat would instantly evaporate from the sheer heat of the explosion or desintigrate into small pieces and considering there is a blast, then the meat would only be slightly visible from the rear but in tiny grains. Else than that it's still a cool model.

Space marines are super soldiers with ridiculous toughness and their ceramite power armour is thick enough to prevent these bolter rounds piercing so far into the armour. Or at least not right with the first couple of shots. The effect we're seeing is more like what it'd do to an ork or eldar guardian. Still cool as hell though, I do love to see Ultramarines explode.
amazing video but why so long without video ?
Life happens! Until I can sustain myself off of the hobby, I need to honor other responsibilities. Plus its all been a bit of a steep learning curve etc
The Marine (USMC) in me has to correct you on one thing... we use (mark) MK19s, not M90s 😅
This looks amazing, I think the only way to improve it would be some source lighting cast by the explosion.
Jesus dude! It was incredible then you added the Ultramarine face and it took it to another level! Reminded me of Doom! Subbed for sure!!
Outstanding work but my inner Darktide nerd can't shut up about how effective bolter can be be against Death Guard space marine
Awesome, he was a heroic leader, but in the Grimm dark future sometimes it’s just about luck. 6️⃣
Beautiful execution and using the printed explosion alongside model fragments is doable and magnificently violent.
I really makes sense to do a violently eradicated version of my dupe heroes/characters to celebrate what the dice do to them every ruddy battle
1:38 I worked in a plastics factory and we did not have proper ventilation. So I breathed plastic fumes and dust for a year working there.
That's the definition of grim dark. Fucking metal dude
hell yah brother!
That marine slamming down that MK19 lid made me cringe. He should know better.
Maybe a heavy bolter would do that. It would be more "accurate" if you made a couple more holes in the guy. Great work though!
Please tell me you know who Perturbator, Carpenter Brut and Gost are!
lol of course.
This was insane dude holy shit. What an entry to youtube.

Amazing job. I just gotta ask, what are the tunes you used for this video? I loved them.
Really amazing work. Bonus points 'cause it's always fun seeing a smurf getting his due
