It feels so strange to hear this performance compared to the one I grew up with, the 1983 Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Leonard Bernstein, also performed live in the Vienna Musikverein. I can't say which version is truer to Brahms' vision, but I know which one I prefer.
A couple of issues here: The tempo is a bit fast, which makes the music lose some of its meaning and satisfaction, feels like some of the music is being 'skipped over.' Second is that it's too 'smooth' and 'buttery' which leads to the loss of structure, power, and it just sounds messy. While I like Möst, this is not a good interpretation.
I totally agree, the same can be said about the 2nd symphony of Brahms under Welser-Möst with his Cleveland Orchestra - just listen to the trumpets in the very finale of the 2nd, desastrous I would say.
I agree with the "too smooth and buttery", I definitely don't agree that it's too fast. If you listen to recordings of Bruno Walter, a contemporary of Brahms who heard him conduct, he does it even faster. I take fire and passion (it's even marked "con brio") over lame pseudo-profundity every day. Sadly , this recording only has the tempo, not the passion
Beauty and Comfort and Grace of Brahms’ music are off the charts
What lovely playing! Absolute joy 🙂
Fantastic! Great Orchestra ❤
Love it is it wierd I live 20 minutes away from here
Fantástico!
superb!
They get it right - nice!
Spitz. Great performance. Preucil was still in the orchestra at this time. He had no idea he would be fired four years later.

My Brahms...Papa used to hear him a lot in his final years along Rachmaninoff. Beethoven was being played everyday though.
Un po' troppo veloce il Poco Allegretto, ma solo per i miei gusti personali!😊
damn i thought it's Gustav Mahler conducting
Excellent- Cleveland are great under Welser Most- cynics are just jealous

I agree about the tempo. Too fast.
I was actually looking out for a faster renedition of the 3 mov. and stumbled upon this.
I think Semyon Bychkov has a better interpretation with WDR
