  • A quick guide to calibrating studio monitors. Balancing volume with an SPL meter app and finding the triangular sweet spot.
All studio monitors need to be balanced and setup properly before you begin using them. Use the free NIOSH SLM app to read the dB of each speaker to ensure they are both putting out the same level of volume.

Great info! I had already downloaded this app. My daw has pink noise built in I will use that. I couldn’t find before I watched your video the c and slow modes. I now know where they are. Thanks!

I had a hunch my left studio monitor was at a lower volume level, despite it being set at the same dial/know setting as my right studio monitor. The info about the sound levels was very helpful in addressing my problem. Thank you!

Add for the triangle, try to rotate each speaker in a 30 degree angle towards your triangle and ears. This helps to avoid side wall reflections and also some phasing issues!

I just got Focal Twin6 Be monitors. They do not come with a volume control. The only control is my monitor controller volume knob. How would I calibrate in this situation? very informative and helpful video. Thank you!

Great! What do I need to do if I add a sub-woofer to my 2.1 setup?

I have volume control on my soundcard and monitors (I have a sub too) please could you maybe explain the process for that type of setup?

Generally, set your soundcard to 0.0 dB, and then follow these same steps in the video for balancing your monitors. Do a quick UA-cam search for equalizing your sub with your setup. Most professionals don't mix / edit with subwoofers unless doing a specific 5.1 (or 11.2) surround sound mixes. Quality studio monitors calibrated correctly should give you access to the full spectrum of listening frequencies. Subwoofers are mainly for your own listening pleasure, and you set them to your taste. Too much subwoofer gain will make your mixes less bassy (because you're hearing more bass than you should) and too little gain will make your mixes more bassy (because you're over compensating for hearing less bass than you should). Generally, I don't mix with a sub to eliminate this problem - I only use a sub for casual listening, video games, movies, etc.

What if only one of my monitors has a volume knob and the other doesn't, can you still calibrate volume?

I find this way way too loud. Using the SOS room size guide down to 75db for my room still soo loud. Is it loud for you?

Hi Ben - generally, you're only calibrating and equalizing your monitors at this level, and it is on the high end. There are general guides and rules of thumb for proper volume mixing levels - but once both monitors are calibrated, you can mix and listen at any volume you want.

Hey Ben, the same thing happened to me. For me, the issue was the db of the pink noise sound file. If you have any audio editing software that will allow you to normalize the pink noise file, that will ensure that it's as loud as possible, giving you an accurate measurement and hence not having to turn the knob on your speakers up too high. I hope this helps.

I'm so confused. How will I hear the pink noise coming out of my monitor if I was just instructed to turn the monitor all the way down?

    • @samuelll3166
      @samuelll3166 2 роки тому

Not sure if you need this answering still however, you turn the volume knob up on your monitor until whatever volume meter you are using reads the desired DB level. Repeat for the other monitor so that they are matched.

You’re not turning it all the way down. You’re turning it to 0db, the neutral setting.

I have been looking for videos because I couldn't find any information on how to dial those settings on the back of the speakers and right of the bat. He says those are useless 😂😂😂😂

Did not use logic or a plugin. Simply download the pink noise audio file from the link in the description and import it as a track into any DAW.

Doesn't look right to me...speakers are too front and too high....front to sides at ear level. Just seen the set up and clicked away. Not worth my viewing time.
