    I came here in 1981.
    Crawley was like a dream come true. A quaint little village back then. 💕

    This is how I remember it. I haven't been back in going on twenty years now. Looking at Google Maps, it's changed enormously. It's like losing an old friend, makes me feel a little sad.

      @@unknownbritishguy.5538 Hello Jameel. I was only eighteen when we left and still living with my parents who made the choice to leave Crawley and return to Surrey where we had moved from way back in 1973. I simply went with them. I returned for a short time in the mid-nineties, but even then the Crawley that I knew, in the seventies particularly, was long gone.

    I was born and bred in Crawley and turned 3 in 1985. Lots I remember from this video. The old AMF bowling where the Travelodge is now brought back great memories. The old cinema (now Turtle Bay?) where my dad took me to see the Jungle Book (1987 I believe - must have been a 20 year anniversary). This was a bittersweet vid for me. I've moved away now but come back when I can. Crawley will always be home. :-)

    This is how I remember Crawley as a kid and teenager in the 70s & 80s. I only ever see it now when passing through on the train.

    Love it ! sporadic flow of cars and the odd pedestrian. I grew up in Pound Hill, Crawley as did generations of my family before, when they lived in a farm behind the Black Dog pub in Northgate. Film shows Crawley just as I left it when moved to Essex in 1989.

      When I was a young boy my Gran often spoke about her younger years living in Black Dog cottage. Although I'm from Crawley I've never known where it was - could it be in Northgate near the Black Dog pub?

      @@Freethinkingtheist77 Black Dog Cottage is still standing and it’s in Hollybush Lane, Northgate. My ancestors the Bottings lived there too.

    That's how I remember the northern end of the High Street/London Road best, the Halifax now the Jubille Oak, the old market site, the cinema,/ ballroom /bowling alley now all gone/relocated. My late mother used to work at the Telephone Exchange until 1985, that and the Tower Block at the college are two of the few things that remain largely unaltered today !!

    How nice (but sad) to see the old Sun inn. I remember when they demolished it and then discovered it was much older than they thought it was.

    I used to go with a girl called Mandy Wilson from bitmead close ifield from 82 ish to 1990.. I came from Richmond Surrey.we spent many days hanging around the town centre..happy memories,i feel very Nostalgic looking at this footage,and the quality is great,I feel like I could reach out and touch it..it feels so now,and not 30 years ago...I was 21 then...apart from the obvious changes,cars the way we used to dress,etc this footage feels so fresh..I wonder where Mandy Wilson is now...... 🤔🤔
    She lived in 9 bitmead close Drummond road off Hyde drive ifield Crawley West Sussex..if anyone knows her today,Say Jason says HI.😉

    Believe it or not, that bloke at 2:34 in the blue bomber jacket is in fact my dad. And the bloke next to him is called John, or John Fuck-Fuck, because apparantly all he ever said was fuck this and fuck that.
    Nowadays, you can see John Fuck-Fuck at all hours of the day drinking lager outside of Tilgate Shops. I see him every morning hahaha.

    1:33 I *do wish* the cameraman of this would have gone into the foyer and showed the inside of that Cannon/ABC cinema. 😒 Can anyone growing up in Crawley at the time tell me what it was like to go a see a film there?

    • @antman5474
      @antman5474 11 місяців тому

      I watched Superman there when it came out. The cinema had one massive screen and an upstairs seating area. Later it was divided up into 3 smaller cinemas. The entrance foyer was mostly original 1930's decor until it was eventually demolished to make way for new developments.
