Fantastic that a visual document like this exists. Some might scoff at this concrete world, but to see a place you know so well, as you remember it being when you were ten is amazing. The bus depot where the Mall especially.
I was living with my family in England at this time (we had moved from Scotland), and I often feel nostalgic for the 80s. I loved how back then simple pleasures kept us entertained for hours, and became exciting adventures. I liked seeing Littlewoods, Woolworths, yellow bins and the 80s cars in this video. Fond memories.
Thanks Dave as a crawleyite who appreciated the town as it was back then. Some how the old sayin come to crawley a grand place to live just doesnt have the same meaning anymore
@@emsityriskmanagement5898 well In that case I'm left with no choice 😕 but to accept your claim.... fortunate for you that you kept your pick n mix or you would of went down as a liar
@@bulldog1603 Proof? Well, I remember working there with a fellow who had childish literacy and mentality. He thought he was funny when he wasn't. Went by the name bulldog (lower case). He always stank of fish, but never worked the fish counter. He can vouch for me!
This brings back lots of memories...my late father was living in Crawley then and I used to go there regularly to see him, he lived in West Green. Interesting to see again the big green opposite the fire station that is now carpeted with offices and flats. I'd forgotten about the old Tesco. I think Poundworld is there now, and the Co-op department store (now Wilko). Thank you for sharing this.
The old library!! I remember, when I was 5 or 6, some woman getting out of the car and calling my dad a pig because she thought he had stolen her parking space. One of those random memories that I wish I could return to and see what actually happened!! Happy times in Crawley. Miss my town.
I was a Saturday (& Thursday evening) worker at Marks & Spencer during my A-levels back around that time. Knew every part of that building well, from rooftop to basement (ok, there was no basement....or was there!?). Great pay, fun times, great end-of-Saturday food bargains, staff discount (which got me a good deal on my first (& still only) real-world suit), good canteen etc.
Crawley was amazing for jobs in 87, people would stand outside the job centre, offering jobs and handing out leaflets, saying don't bother going in there, we've got jobs on offer.
The Memorial Gardens before the County Mall there was a car park and bus station you could pretty much see the train station from the Memorial Gardens back then.
As of 2020 this was 33 years ago. So I'm going to stick my neck out and say County Mall will be demolished and housing will take its place before we get to 2053. I'll be gone I expect (born in Crawley '63) but I'd put a tenner on it!
It's a com shame how these places are changed from when it looked like a really nice place to live it's like exeter was open like that backwards then now it ruined with industry and flats hotels offices you name it England is gone from being a quait little villages
It’s also a shame when you see how nice the Memorial Gardens were, back then. No drunks or stoners taking up every other bench! in fact, the whole town centre was just cleaner and more spacious.
They obviously had the idea to make it super convenient to put your litter in the correct place. However now we have more people, more litter and more cuts to services dealing with these types of things.
This is so cool, I'm only 17 but spent a lot of my life in Crawley so it's really nice to see what it was like back then
I moved here in 1981.seen alot of changes but not for the better. Fantastic memories.
Thankyou for sharing. 😊

Went through Crawley yesterday - for the first time since around the time these videos were made! Can’t believe how much things have changed.

I was 16 in 1987 and worked in the Woolworths in Crawley town centre. This brings back memories of a much nicer time.
have you got any proof you worked In woolworths when you 16, as anyone could claim that
@@bulldog1603 I still got the pic & mix which we all took on the way home at 5.30 :-)

This looks so much nicer than it is now, so much green around the town, now it’s all been built on.
Some call it progress, i call it greed.
It’s 2020 and I can still remember some places
Absolutely brilliant ! Thanks for sharing ! Memories !
I haven't lived in Crawley for 28 years, but I worked in that Tesco in 1983 stacking shelves before school. Brought back memories seeing it!

No mobile phones ❤ I remember it well
in 1987 Crawley town didn't have homeless people laying in shop doorway.😰
Thanks for uploading these.

James, 4.50 is a lady called Sue who used to work for Marks and Spencer in Crawley and a friend at the time :-)
Amazing to see her hairstyle and clothes, identical to mine at the time, so much so that I though it was me, momentarily!
can you prove that was sue from marks and Spencer’s because we only have your word that It Is
are you dave double you
Those were the days !

That's an interesting bet, but I would not be surprised if it happened.
I stay in a house in Ifield during the late 70s/80s it's all a bit different now i bet

So many yellow bins.. how many do we need? lol..
We have fewer now. And more litter...
Do you see any litter on the ground? Now compare it to how much you’d see today. So yeah, that’s how many we need!
@@funkymonkeyuk You do make a good point...
