@@Atze1arsenal Thank you for your comment! If you’re planning to do the whole AV1, it would be really tough to complete in 4 days. That would mean approx 29km each day with 1800m of elevation gain. Also, it’s not so easy to “cut corners” with this hike. There aren’t bus connections that would help you to skip parts. In Lagazuoi there are ski lifts you could use to go down and up the valley. I’d recommend you save 6 or 7 days for the hike. Also, you don’t want to be rushing through those beautiful mountains. 😉
@@laueronen Thanks ! No indeed, definitely not intending on rushing ;) Was thinking about doing just a part of the AV1 due to the limited time So was curious which part you would recommend walking if you only have 4 days (and intend to hike about 20km per day)

For me the highlights on this trail were Lago di Braies, the wartime tunnels of Galleria Lagazuoi and the Lagazuoi peak, Lago Coldai & Monte Civetta, Mondeval, Cinque Torri. Though probably the main thing to consider is where you can quit the trail. I'm not sure where there are buses you can catch to get to the towns. But in your case I'd start from Lago di Braies and leave out the last few stages.

Hey, thanks for watching the video! Along the route there weren't as many natural water sources as I hoped. We would always refill at the refugios we went by and I always carried about 1,5 liters with me. Even if we saw rivers on the maps many times that wasn't the reality anymore. So it's better to plan your water refills based on the refugios you pass, and luckily there and many of them! Same goes for food: you don't necessarily need to carry much food because you could have full lunches and dinners at the refugios. However, it's important to know that we didn't pass by any grocery store or minimarket. So it's hard to do refills regarding snacks. We were aware of this and that's why carried a lot of snacks haha!

On my hikes I always use maps.me (works great offline, the gps signal never fails). Once you have saved the gpx file on your phone you can open it with maps.me.

@@ricktourand2234 I have a 50 liter backpack and Julio has a 60l. When we camp and carry most of our food those backpacks has been perfect. Also, when I do solo hikes with my own tent I can fit everything well in the same pack, because it expands by 10liters. Hope that helps! 😊
Looks amazing! Did you find you were coming across lots of people walking towards you because majority do it the other way? I’m tempted to go to south to north but will be camping anyway/ likely leaving at different times so maybe would be staggered and come across less people taking the more common direction. Any thoughts? Thanks! 😊
Usually it was half way through the day when we’d see the people hiking the other way. In the mornings and afternoon we didn’t see many people. Personally I’d rather do that than have a lot of people behind and in front of me at all times. 😄
Did you find that you ran into jams on the descents when most people were climbing up? Are there acceptable wild camping spots a bit before or after the last hut before lake Bries? Did you feel you were climbing most of the time each day? I actually prefer going up than down but wondering do you think it's that much tougher going south north? Thx again. I like not having to make a reservation at the lake
@@bkpktrekker4086 If you go south to north you’ll climb about 1000m more than doing it the other way. On our web page you can see the daily ascents and descents we did, also the graphs help to visualize what type of climbs you have each day. We didn’t have any problems with people doing it the opposite way, you pass them quickly.
Wonderful video! I see your answers about wild camping but still don’t understand. You can wild camping if refugios are fully booked? Who is going to check that if I put my tent somewhere at high place? If I go to the Dolomites I totally don’t want to book refugios but want to stay somewhere with tent. Is it even possible?

Thank you for your comment! We had a map and also a guide book that I had downloaded on my kindle. We barely used the guide book though, a proper map is essential. Also I had prepared the stages beforehand so we knew how many kms and elevation gain we'd do each day. I've done the TMB some years ago already (it was my first long distance hike I did alone), so it won't be on our hiking list anytime soon 😀
Hey Grzegorz, In all of my hikes I've been using North Face Blue Kazoo sleeping bag that has a -10 celsius limit. I'm a cold sleeper so I need a warm sleeping bag. I think for most people a bag that has a -5 celsius limit should be good enough if you're hiking in the Alps during the summer months. For example if the night time temperature is +5 degrees, I'd say it's good to have a bag that has a -5 degree limit.
Camping is not allowed there but if the refugios are full they usually can tell you where you can pitch a tent for the night. On our guide you can see more details about the subject: takeahike.io/hike/alta-via-1
Hey! We navigated the route by ourselves. We carried a map with us where I had marked the trail. Also there are a lot of signposts. I believe there are tours you could join if you want a guided hike.

Hey! I highly recommend doing it in reverse. This is how we broke it down: 1. La Pissa -> Rif Pian de Fontana 2. -> Rif Carestiato 3. -> Lago Coldai 4. -> Mondeval (before Forcella Giau) 5. -> Lago Lagazuoi 6. -> Lago Piciodel 7. -> Lago di Braies
We like to camp where we can have a water source, and only one day was a bit difficult to find good water source. When you vivac in a responsable way it seems to be tolerated.
Camping is not allowed on the mountains but we had a tent to pitch only for the night (you pitch it at sunset and put it down at sunrise). Some of the refugios helped explaining where it's ok to do an overnight vivac.
In 5 days you'd have to hike 23km and gain 1400m of elevation each day. I'd say that's pretty exhausting and you'd be rushing through the mountains.. Brought back memories of my AV1 trip this summer too m.ua-cam.com/video/ns0w5io5AKo/v-deo.html I recall descending from Cima di Zita forcella and saying that it was a crazy long descent and that I wouldn't dream of doing a south to north route! That initial climb is just HUGE. Interesting to see it in reverse. What time of year was it? The trail looks completely empty.
We still had fresh legs and we did the climb first thing in the morning so it didn't feel too bad actually haha. We hiked in late August which is the busiest time and we did come across a lot of people hiking the classic way.

No, we didn't see any bears. I think there's a very small population of bears in the Dolomites and they are not in the Alta Via 1 area.
