    "WILL THESE WORK WITH FOAM?" "WILL THESE WORK WITH FOAMCORE?"
    Ya'll is killin' me.....as I said in the video (come on guys watch the whole thing), these do not work well in XPS foam. That includes dollar store foamcore which IS think XPS. While foamcore is a less dense XPS, and these do imprint better on it than insulation foam, it does also crush the foam in a bad way to do so. If you want something for foam, these are not the tool for you (the rollers are). These are designed to work with polymer clay and they work PERFECTLY for that.

      Maybe use a roller on a large bit of foam and then cut it into the dungeon tiles. Not as immediate as a tile plunger would be, but still fast and you could vary it far more than with the plungers.

    Worth noting is that you can use the untextured cutting one in combination with the rolling pins if you want to make wood or other similarly sized tiles with different patterns. Just spread the clay, roll your roller over it and then quickly cut the tiles using the plunger.

    I'm a member/admin of a central Ohio gaming group (OGRE: Ohio Gaming Recreational Enthusiasts) and your videos and this community are fantastic. Been gaming since 1986, but I'm just starting crafting (I consider myself level 1 Crafter at this point) and these have been absolutely great and informative. A word from someone who has made a LOT of stuff from polymer. Using spray paint is generally NOT an option for longterm use. It will work for immediate gratification, but will dissolve your clay over time leaving things tacky and super, super disgusting.

      There are a few kinds of sprays that are PC compatible, but they are few and far between and if you don't get those specifically you're in for a world of grossness a few months down the road.

    Polymer-clay is awesome for many things Jeremy. I've done Millipore for many years. It's a great way to make tokens. If you ever decide to make canes to make tokens I recommend a pasta roller and cake dies. The dies are used to extrude the clay into different shapes to build the image. Wrap roll cut and bake. It's really easy and fun.

    Interesting! I'm not into modelling (yet), but I use these types of cutters for ceramics and they're great for tiny objects. I think these things were originally sold for fondant which is probably why they're so well suited to clay-like materials.

    Jeremy I am a follower of yours and patreon yours too, 10 days ago I bought the Dungeon Tile Plunger Cutters by Green Stuff World because I love D & D and I follow your steps, I believed that this service would serve for XPS foam and thus facilitate the elaboration of the dungeon tiles but not is asin I can only do as you do and comment on the video, tb I am with you in that said cutter is good for making the tiles that another great master craftsman makes like Wyloch's Crafting, in short I will follow your steps and investigate some way to use them with the XPS foam and you will get it to know; I loved your video of the stone bridge and everything you do and make.
    P: D: Sorry for my English since it is not very good and I use the google translator for it.

    Use a cheap release powder with your air dry clay, like a light dusting of flour or baking soda. Or a lubricant spray. Or just a silicon lubricant.
    Lay an even, thin coating of the release powder (Don't dust it on but no caking. Like powdering a pastry) and then punch your mold on it. No guarantee to work, but it helps. The more detailed the mold, the harder it is to get a smooth release.
    Yes, this leaves powder residue on your clay. Remove what you can with a stiff paint brush after the clay is dry and just call it tile-unique texturing.

    • @WylochsArmory
      @WylochsArmory 6 років тому +1

      Oh you'd have to ask the man himself. In the video he seemed pretty clear that these won't work on foam. I would assume that also means foamcore board...

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  6 років тому

      As mentioned in the video......these are not suitable for foam.
      As for the clay, that cheap natural clay is terrible, but I just played with some DAS (white) air dry clay for another project and it works much better, and would likely work well with these.

    • @ThunderStruck15
      @ThunderStruck15 6 років тому +2

      Sorry, you said "XPS" not foam core, and I thought it might be different. Additionally, those textured rolling pins are just fondant texture rollers with a jacked up price. You can get almost identical ones on wish for under 5 bucks. And, another thought, I bet that this stuff would work brilliantly with monster mud. that would be an incredibly cheap and quick way to use them.

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  6 років тому +1

      XPS means extruded polystyrene.... which foamcore is made from. Insulation foam is also made from xps....they are both xps foam.
      And those roller are similar to fondant rollers, but fondant rollers usually have a reversed pattern, and patterns that are far bigger and not actually designed for building things at 28mm scale like the GSW ones are. By all means, if you don't believe me, buy some of those $5 rolling pins and see for yourself.

  • @MoragTong_
    @MoragTong_ 6 років тому

    I would argue that these will DEFINITETLY speed up your build process if you are using Hirst Arts molds or similar. Being able to roll out a large piece of clay, stamp out as many tiles as you need and throw them in the oven for 10-15min is insanely faster than using a wet product with molds. Thanks for the informative video and the heads up, I bought the rolling pins more than a year ago(originally found them on eBay) and haven't been following Green Stuffs product line lately.

    There are also paper clay type air dry mediums, mostly made in Japan. It looks like fluffy putty and can be easy to work with, tho you may have to check out comparison view to see which type is best for you personally (cost vrs feel vrs smell vrs availability in your country ect)
    There is even paperclay that is used to make flower petals. It dries super thin hard but flexible. That might be useful in models for cloth and curtains at windows or trees

    Regarding the cost efficiency of using these tiles with Sculpey or other polymer clays. You could make a few set pieces like rooms, corridors, etc., and then use a molding compound to duplicate the pieces and cast them in a plaster of your choice such as Ultracal, dental stone, or whatnot. I'm ordering these soon and plan on doing that very thing. Thanks for the excellent review Jeremy. :)

    So I come from a Games workshop start point, I ended up useing milliput over greenstuff (greenstuff from GW costs an arm and a leg), milliput is a bit messier than greenstuff as it works more like clay when wet but it sets up HARD without the need to bake it, milliput has saved my butt I had a hexagon fish tank that sprung a leak after quickly saving the fish I used the putty to fix up the tank, it wasn’t pretty but it lasted the two years I had that tank for it comes in four types with the white been really good for modelling work as you can carve it and sand it.

    Use the Proxxon to cut tiles that fit the plunger.
    Put the tile you cut into the plunger/cutter.
    Stamp the tile with the plungers on a hard surface.
    Cutting tiles the size of the plunger/cutter is easy on a proxxon and you can make tons in nothing flat.
    This removes the issue of the plunger/cutter not having the ability to cut foam.

    I reckon if they made a big press version with replaceable textures to make rooms and path ways to save time cause you can easily cut 1 or 2 tiles from the total press for small bases or tiles
    also if they sharpened it up to use on foam for the imprints they would open a massive market to both clay and foam users.
    Just thinking about it,
    I wonder if they added lines to the rolling pin whether it would create an even grid/ tile texture

    Forgive me if someone already suggested this, but would using some sort of non-stick kitchen spray possibly help with keeping cheap air dry clay from sticking to the plungers where water didn't? Only thing I'm not sure of is whether it would keep the tiles from drying properly afterward. Personally if I went this route I'd be fine with using Sculpy, but for those who want to save every possible penny....

    This is actually pretty interesting, the idea of using polymer clay for dungeon building... With thinner tiles it becomes easier to make identifiable 3d elements... Also, you can stretch the product more and get consistent results by rolling out the clay with a pasta machine at your chosen thickness and then going through and stamping away...
    Plus there's the option to use paper clay instead of polymer clay for an air-dry option (and you can make it at home with cheap supplies).
    On top of that, making stage dressing/props for your rooms becomes much easier and more feasible (since you are no longer working with tiny pieces of foam) and there's a million tools for small sculpting or molds for small items like bottles.
    Very interesting! Thank you for the interesting idea!

      I use a clay machine (pasta roller) to roll my clay out. It is definitely worth it to be able to roll the clay out quickly and evenly.

    I feel like these would be nice to use as details for your tile system. Cut out the standard 3x3 foam tile and just glue 9 of these on top.

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  6 років тому +2

      I've been debating it.....and shaving down the foam to remove the thickness of the clay tiles so the finished product is the same thickness as my other ones.

      This could be used for areas of the dungeon where you want extra detail, at least.

  • @DavidClunie

    here is an idea, rather than using them as cookie cutters where you're imprinting them into the foam, or other materials, you could use them as "stamps" (there are other stamp products out there too) with ink or paint. So you could texture the foam per usual then use the stamps for the "texture" stamps for whatever you style you want, cobblestone, tiles, plain/blank. etc. www.d4d6d8d10d12d20.com

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial

      Like a paint stamp? similar to what DM Scotty makes for tilescapes? That would probably work pretty well, I just personally don't like stonework to be "faked" that way.

    Man! I totally missed this video. Bummer that they don't work on foam. Someone recently pointed out Wyloch to me and I've reintroduced myself to DM Scotty. I really want to build some dungeon tiles and some space tiles, but I need to make sure I don't drop all my other projects. The fact that people disliked this video blows my mind.

    Don't know if anny of you already did this but: DAS modelling clay worked verry good for me and i didn't have to bake them. In the netherlands you can buy this stuff for €1 +/- €3 in the dollar stores and you have like 1kg of clay. So you can make a lot of tiles.

    Cool video, just wish you would have shown what it looked like on xps foam and dollar tree foam. I know you mentioned it not working, but a lot of us are stubborn ....LOL. Wish they made these out of metal, so they would work on foam! Keep up the great work!

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial

      On XPS foam the indentation was so weak I doubt I'd be able to capture it on video. On $store foamcore it worked a bit better, but totally crushed it in a bad way.

    Pretty nifty. Seems like the round Dias around the press would make it a bit awkward to line up multiple tiles in a row? May have to try this on my kind of foam to see how well it works on my tiles. Have you tried these on your foam? Thanks for the upload man

    • @daviddreher8588

      I'm interested in knowing if you can impress this on foam as well.. Seems like you can just line up the edges..

    • @RollforDamageRFD
      @RollforDamageRFD 6 років тому +1

      yeah that's how i would see it working as well. I use a different kind of foam than XPS. For imprints i need to heat my foam a bit so i have to make sure i can do this efficiently and quickly before the foam cools to get a great impression.

      I'll ignore the part where you asked about the thing I answered in the video ;)
      It may work on other types of foam, like EVA, but I dont work with that so I cant say.
      The round bet definately gets in the way if you are trying to line up the squares, but punching out of clay you dont need to line them up perfectly as you can reuse the bits between the cut outs.

    Thank you for the review! Does save me a few euros for now.... Maybe GSW will respond by improving the material, quality and design options (ie. wood planks and so on). I am wondering if they could work on wet/soaked cardboard/cardstock though???
    I remember from my printing days, that there were forms which used plastic bus metal bars as well (considering these forms had to withstand the pressure of a printing press for thousands of copies).

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  6 років тому +2

      I can't say the quality of these need improvement. They work perfectly for their intended purpose, they just work poorly doing something I WANTED them to do but they weren't designed to do. I do hope they make more variety of patterns though, and maybe some hex versions.

  • @mythrilsentinel1

    Have you considered using a layer of plastic wrap (saran) as a barrier between the punch and the dollar store clay? Avoids the sticking, and, if you use a small sheet of mda as a surface, you can just flip over a sheet of the tiles and let them air dry right on the plastic film. Peel and paint after they dry. Just an idea. If it works send me an eMail (or a set of punches would be nice ;oP)

    I was looking at your shop section of the website and noticed that there isn’t a listing of chipboard. Amy overlooking it or is there not one there?
    Can you suggest a good one? Maybe do a vid on chipboard tips and how it can integrate with your foam builds.
    Thanks!! Keep up the great vids.

      I don't have it listed since its not a material I use often, but it is important to get the correct stuff to maximize thinness vs sturdiness. This is the exact one I ordered: amzn.to/2Fr9C10

    Also both sizes are the base size of most fantasy wargames been 20 and 25mm respectively for things like Warhammer Demons and kings of war orcs ect use 25mm square bases or 1 1/4 in size so you can make base toppers
