Don't forget cans. Especially cardboard from can cases. Only bane is, needing to deal with the grooves, but in an improv manner; it can easily add character! :)
It always amazes me how at the start things look mundane and I can’t imagine how simple cardboard can become stone. And then you magic them into it. You brilliant son of gun.
Thank you... Where i live you can barely get the foam everyone uses for this stuff, and the one you get is VERY expensive (at least for a guy like me) i was starting to feel really unmotivated until i saw this video. Watching how pretty your tiles ended up being really motivated me to make my own out of regular cardboard!! thank you for this, great videos
Looks nice, man. i've tried using hotglue to cover the exposed corrugation of the cardboard. Just cover the side with it and press it down on some none-stick baking paper, it cools in, like, 10 seconds and cut away the excess hotglue.
This would be a great craft for me because I have a freaking ton of cardboard and cardstock in my closet. Also, I love your Channel it gives me great ideas to do for D&D and other Hobbies I have
You have found a sweet spot where skill meets simplicity - and, WOW! it works brilliantly. Of course, if any crafters out there really 'get-off' on edge-banding this could really be the project for them. Real cool build!
We are a family of 4 who just started playing dnd...we can't stop watching your videos! Very inspiring and love your sense of humor. Cheers from Nova Scotia!
Can't wait to make some tiles once I'm back from work. Made a small abandoned house mini sprues and a model box. Very very rough but happy to have made my own
Excellent challenge. ⚔️⚔️⚔️Will see if I can find something in the shed and have a go - to my past tiles I added a few blood splatters - gave them some accents. Great collab with Franky D 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This was JUST what I needed! I've wanted to do the dungeon craft professor's "ultimate dungeon terrain" for a while, but I am foamless here and wanted a cardboard version! I went with frankies version, so I could do a double sided circle with a classic dungeon on one side, and a forest/grassland side on the other.
Undercommon! Simply fantastic, I'm gonna use that for imperial "units" from now on. Also, really good cutting noises in this one. We need a 10 hour loop of that stuff for a relaxing sleep.
Your channel along with Dungeoncraft have helped me build so much. I'm slowly building my collection and will eventually have my own hoard of awesome, mostly (extra) cost free terrain
You are one of the most entertaining crafters that I watch And I'm always amazed by what you can do with cardboard. Another gorgeous peasant build! Thank you for continuing to make videos during this time. Hope you and your loved ones are safe.
These look phenomenal!! I have a set of my own tiles that I crafted a while ago using printouts from Warlock's Homebrew. I initially glued the printouts to sets of index cards I glued together to make them thicker like I do with my paper minis but they felt flimsy and light. Then I got the brilliant idea to glue the already existing tiles down to some thicker corrugated box cardboard I filched from work. Hey, we're recycling/throwing it out anyway so why not? Anyway, after the tiles dried I carefully cut them out (I emphasize careful because unless you have a razor sharp box cutter/scissors this part could take a while) and numbered them so if I really liked a layout or map I could build it again and again in the future. After that I painted the sides black with some acrylic to hide the corrugated pattern on the sides but something was still missing. My tiles looked too neat and perfect so I roughed them up with a crumpled ball of foil and dry-brushed some more black paint on top and wiped away any excess paint to give them a weathered look. Though I'm not actively working on anything prop/terrain wise I may give this a whirl to build some "ultimate dungeon terrain" or an all purpose board like I've been wanting to do for a while.
Awesome. Doing the classic basic craft and still feels new and inspirational. For texturing the cardboard floor tiles i am wondering if it would make sense to apply a technique normally used for foam bricks. Put the cut tiles before glueing to the cardboard in a tin together with small stones and shake vigorously. Have to try out. Damn you Lukas, now i have to craft. Again.... 😎
I don't believe the tin can with stones technique would work with cardstock, but you can always give it a try. The cardstock needs more pressure to get textures, perhaps you have to shake extra vigorously :D
@@BardsCraft you are absolutely right. Tried but didnt work. However, you might take a proper stone and texture cardboard before even cutting cardboard into strips. Just tried using sheets of cardboard from food packaging before cutting into 25mm x 25mm scares. That seems to work. With Cardboard that has sort of softish back I am just trying to brush cardboard with wet brush to soften cardboard and then structuring. That seems to work just as fine.
I've been making elementals after watching your stuff. Where can I share it with you because you're absolutely my inspiration and I want to credit you if I am showing them off? Edit: also, it is it absolutely the best to see a crafter making things on a peasant budget. Always annoying to see a video called "Simple wall textures" that starts off with, "all you'll need is a workshop, three slaves and thirty pounds of gold leaf" You builds are brilliant and inspiring
They look neat...just don't have the room for a whole new set of tiles considering the older ones that I'd spent a while perfecting wouldn't match up with the look. Those were wood that I laser etched and painted, took a while to get the right method for painting them.
@@BardsCraft Hey there... there are two videos at the bottom, one is "Dungeon Tile Challenge" and the other is "Building Amazing Dungeon Tiles" hope you get a chance to look and we are definitely taking on your dungeon tile challenge this week!! Look forward to it👍
I'm having a challenge of my own. I'm attempting a less morbid version of The Hangman's tree from The Witcher. It's... not going well with all of the craft stores closed, but I'm trying! I'll definitely have to try making these tiles, even if they'll only be used in photos!
For anyone who actually makes these add dowels into the cardboard sides so you can stick them into larger pieces. Just add a little bit of glue to the dowel and slide it in, try not to shove it cuz after the glue holds you can slide them into bigger pieces and they won't move apart as much!
I like quartering evenly too much to use metric. Just because I have 10 fingers doesn't mean I have to use a base 10 counting system. Also, unpopular opinion, but Fahrenheit is a much better system for measuring atmospheric temperature as it relates to human comfort.
I learned how to use metric measurements from tabletop game crafters on UA-cam. Cardboard tiles are great for people with limited room. Such as living in a camper...
most of us in the US&Canada can get foamcore/foam board for $1 a sheet, and at that price, it is very easy to buy out a store for less than $20. it isn't as good as the insulation foam, but it's cheap.
Fellow northerner here. Where/how do you source your cardboard? Buying brand new cargo boxes is kind of expensive and you get way more cardboard than needed.
Any fast and easy way to make em "kinda" waterproof? Everybody knows that no matter what there will be some moisture from glasses etc on the table. Will a light coat with diluted white glue will do the trick?

This is the only channel that I have alerts set up for :)
By far the most charming terrain creation channel currently, love it!
Really cool idea! Especially now when we should not take unnecessary trips to buy random stuff.
Made a set like this 3 years ago and it is STILL being used in my weekly games ❤
I appreciate that you promote each other's channels. I didn't know about Franky D. Crafter before. :-)
It's Frankie! He's got a nice contrasting style to the typical dungeons. Good stuff, both of you.
Yeah I really liked Franky's drawing instead of painting

great craft!I like how you don't need foam for dungeon tiles
Every time you surprise me with your great ideas.
It's amazing how you turned the tiles to naturally with the random pattern cracks.
Thanks, I like the way the cracks were so easy to make with the pen. Those cracks definitely would require more time if it was foam dungeon tiles

Very cool and simple technique. I'll go check out Franky's response to your challenge.

Great as always Bard, if you want to spare the cardboard the rock crushing you could add cracks and texture to the tiles before gluing them on.
fair point

man you’re so creative! ❤
Love your dry humour. Don't worry, everybody in the galaxy starts dry-brushing with too much paint.
I dry brush with a wet brush at first and eventually, it just works out xD
I like them! If you wanted to tidy up the edges, a simple strip of paper around them would fix it, but maybe too much extra work.
always love your project bro👍
I don't play table top games but I DO like action figure photography. And these tiles would be perfect for diorama pieces!
I wonder if you can add some magnets around the edges... But if its cardboard idk
Please plug the discord more often! I only found it before this video because I wondered if you had one and went looking!

For the first 10 seconds of the video you are holding a tile that seems to have magnets on the edge, is there a video about those?
Take a look at the channel Crooked Staff Terrain for paper textures that you stick on instead of paint for 2.5d tiles. Yours still look good though 👍
Yeah lots of good stuff there, would probably make some of his stuff but I won't get a printer just for that

I get it from stuff I order or from friends. If you need to buy cardboard try IKEA. I happened to see that large packaging boxes cost only 0,7€.
