Funny thing is, their size is the only thing impressive about them in the novel since Wukong defeated them pretty easily. Compared to the other crazy things in the novel they aren't all too powerful.

if you know about the tale and the fiction, this would be like 10 times awesomeness. Deeping meanings hidden under every detail design and under every word. Easters everywhere if you know about the story. All asian kids are about to pee in pants. The scale, scope of the game...simply insane. If theres an Oscar for gaming industry, this is it. not to mention theres only 30 people in the team, these dudes have their faith on it, no wonder came up with such master piece. Let me briefly introduce the world background in the book "Journey to the West".
The world in the book is a world ruled by gods based on ancient Chinese religious myths. Gods live high in the sky, while ordinary people live on the ground. At the same time, there are many monsters living with humans.
The gods in the sky have two camps, one is "Heavenly Court". Chinese called tian ting, tian means above the sky, and ting means palace.
Tian ting refers to the palace where the kingdom of God lives.
The English translation of tian ting into heaven is actually not very accurate.
Heavenly Court is a place full of strict regulations.
In Western mythology, heaven is a place of beauty, freedom and happiness.
In Chinese mythology, Heavenly Court is a serious and solemn place with many rules and prohibitions.
The organization of the Heavenly Court is similar to the human dynasty. There is a supreme king and various gods, such as the rain god responsible for rain, the fire god responsible for fire, the death god responsible for life and death, and so on.
The other camp is the Buddhist gods living in the West. The Buddhist gods do not assume any specific duties.
You can understand the two camps as two parties vying for the president, and Tian Ting（Heavenly Court） currently holds all the rights. The Buddhist gods are seeking more rights and beliefs. Despite the competition, there is currently no war between the two camps.
It seems that the heavenly court, which has held power for too long, has become rigid, while Buddhism, which has been preparing for a long time, is more intelligent and flexible.
The Monkey King’s westward journey is the beginning of Buddhism's preparations to fight for rights and beliefs.

Wukong was conceived by a strange stone.
He was very smart and strong since he was born.
He bet with the local monkeys that whoever can jump over the waterfall is the monkey king.
So Wu Kong became the Monkey King.
After few years, some monkeys died. The Monkey King also understood the concept of death.
In order to escape death, the Monkey King heard that there are gods in the sky, and that gods never die.
So the Monkey King left where he was born and successfully found a very powerful god to teach him how to gain the power of immortality.
After the Monkey King learned his strength, he returned to the monkey group.
But before long, the god of death thought that the monkey king had reached the end of his life.
When the Monkey King was sleeping, Death took away the soul of the Monkey King and went to hell.
This angered the Monkey King, he snatched the death list of the god of death and deleted his own name. This means that the Monkey King will never die.
When the Monkey King returned to the group of monkeys from hell, he thought he needed powerful weapons and strong armor to face the revenge from the god of death.
So the Monkey King robbed the sea king's palace. And got a set of perfect armor and a stick that will become the iconic weapon of the Monkey King in the future.
The important thing to mention here is this stick, which was cast by the gods in ancient times to resist the great flood.
This stick can be infinitely long and thicker.
(I believe you have all noticed that the weapons of the Monkey King in the video are sometimes very long and sometimes very short. When the Monkey King is not fighting, he likes to make his weapons very small and hide them in his ears.
Taking out the weapon from the ear is also the iconic action of the Monkey King)
After robbing the god of death and the god of the sea, the gods of heaven decided to send an army to punish the monkey king. But due to the power of the Monkey King, the army was defeated.
In order to avoid greater losses, the Heavenly Court decided to recruit the Monkey King to enter the Heavenly Court.
But because of the stinginess and arrogance of the heavenly gods, the position they gave to the monkey king was to raise horses for the heavenly army.
The proud Monkey King thought it was a humiliation. So the Monkey King started the second war with the Heavenly Court.
In this war, the Heavenly Court exhausted all its strength and failed to fight the Monkey King. Instead, the constant fighting made the Monkey King stronger.
So they decided to recruit the Monkey King again and give the Monkey King a higher position and greater rights.
But soon the arrogance of the heavenly gods angered the Monkey King again.
The heavenly gods decided to hold a grand banquet, but they did not invite the Monkey King.
The Monkey King thought it was humiliation and disrespect for him again.
So the Monkey King began his third war with the gods.
But this time the Monkey King did not win. The Heavenly Court invited the Buddhist gods to fight against the Monkey King.
The most powerful Shakyamuni in Buddhism defeated the Monkey King. In order to punish the monkey king, he turned his palm into a huge mountain range and pressed it on the monkey king's body to imprison the monkey king for five hundred years.
The war between the monkey king and the gods is over.

But this war allowed Buddhism to see the weakness of the heavenly court. So Buddhism decided to plan an action to obtain greater benefits for Buddhism.
This is the origin of Journey to the West.
Shakyamuni sent one of his disciples to preach in the country of mankind.
This disciple is called "Golden Cicada" in Buddhism, and his human name is Tang monk.
Monk Tang was reincarnated and reborn as a human being, and soon began his mission.
Monk Tang’s mission was very successful, and he gained a lot of faith in the human country.
In order to gain more faith, the monk Tang promised to mankind that he would go to the Lingshan Mountain where Sakyamuni was.
He asked for the books of truth from Shakyamuni and brought these books back to mankind. These Buddhist books will make mankind understand the "truth".
(You can understand these Buddhist books as books that record the truth of the world)
But Monk Tang was just an ordinary human at that time, he didn't have any power.
He needed to move step by step from the human world to the most western Lingshan.
The story of "Journey to the West" officially began.
The original book does not describe the struggle for faith between Heavenly Court and Buddhism.
Both sides are trying to acquire more human believers, but at the same time both sides have maintained peace and friendship. (At least the surface is maintained)
To ensure the safety of Tang monks. The Tang monk released the Monkey King who had been imprisoned for five hundred years and asked the Monkey King to join Buddhism and protect the Tang monk from going to the West.
The Monkey King was very grateful to the Tang monks who gave him freedom, so the Monkey King regarded Tang monks as mentors, and they began their journey to the west.
At this time, Heavenly Court decided to do something to obstruct Journey to the West.
In order not to cause war with the Buddhist gods, the heavenly court decided
Send two spies to join the Journey to the West.
On the surface, these two gods were meant to help Journey to the West, but in fact, during the entire journey to the West, the two people dispatched by Heavenly Court were almost helpless and caused a lot of trouble instead.
At the end of the story, the Journey to the West was finally successful. The Tang monk got the book of truth and brought it back to the human world.
And because Tang monks kept preaching to the Monkey King all the way, the Monkey King eventually joined Buddhism and became the fighting god of Buddhism.

This is almost an overview of the entire Journey to the West.
In China, Journey to the West is considered a fairy tale about the heroic monkey king.
(Mainly because Journey to the West was made into an anime. In fact, 99% of Chinese people have not read the original book of Journey to the West).
All Chinese children feel that Journey to the West is a book similar to Snow White. The characters have gone through various difficulties, finally completed their mission and lived happily together.
But in fact, the author of Journey to the West lived in China in the 16th century. At that time, the native Chinese religion was Taoism, and the god system of Taoism belief was "Heavenly Court".
The main competitor of Taoism is Buddhism from India. The deity of Buddhism is Sakyamuni.
Therefore, the book Journey to the West hides a lot of information about the struggle for belief between Buddhism and Taoism.
This is why the game is called "Black Myth"
What the game wants to express is that Journey to the West is definitely not a happy ending like Snow White.
The powerful monkey king has the power to defeat the gods, why does the monkey king respect a Tang monk who has no power?
Is it just because Tang monk released the Monkey King?
In fact, in order to tame the monkey king, the Buddhist gods made a head ring to imprison the power of the monkey king.
Monk Tang didn't have any power, but Monk Tang mastered the spell of the head ring. Whenever the Monkey King tried to escape or violated Tang monk’s orders,The monk Tang would use spells to tighten the monkey king's head ring, the monkey king would feel extreme pain and lose all his power.
Therefore, behind the myth is endless darkness.
Is the Monkey King really happy in the end? Did he really choose to join Buddhism by himself or he was forced?
The image of the Monkey King represents the Chinese fantasy of freedom in the 16th century.
They imagine that there is such a monkey that can break all the rules and do anything freely.
But the reality is that the monkey did not get free in the end.
The above are my own views on Journey to the West.
I believe that not everyone agrees with me. Because I was pessimistic that the Monkey King did not get happiness in the end.
I believe that the creators of the game have the same idea as mine, which is why they named the game "Black Myth"

while some or if not many have not read the book of journey to the West many should realize how much we owe this one book alone being a direct influence on many anime protagonists today are all based off of like Goku and Luffy.

For people like these reactors I’m assuming know nothing about “Journey to the west” Classic Chinese story, it looks like a phenomenal game but if you have no knowledge prior I would suggest reading up on it and then play the game but most people won’t do that and it’s a little irritating people talking when they don’t know anything about that subject.

But overall, the Monkey King's previously destructive energies are turned to good in protecting his new master on his pilgrimage. He makes mistakes along the way. With firm but sympathetic guidance, however, he is good in the end - supremely so, to the point of achieving Buddhahood. Pls do research sometimes ok? Good.
Also for the one who made this comment, After the monk impresses the gods with his lecture on the Lotus Sutra, Monkey is given a golden monk's staff (among other items) as a magical weapon against the evils they will face on their journey to India. ... A weapon that predates the Compliant Rod from the Ming version is mentioned in passing early on in the tale.
So yeah the staff didn't come from his fur, It was given to him.
