Good video, I found it easy to swap my shock today just by jacking the bike up by the right foot peg, it made a tripod with the side stand and front tire that was very stable. Then I used a ratchet strap through the rear rim and over the rear subframe to manipulate the mounting holes to line up. Piece of cake!
Hi Bryan-Absolutely love and greatly value these tutorial videos. (As well as your reviews). You are a big reason a non mechanical guy like me now has the confidence to perform basic maintenance on my 2016 Super Tenere ES. Has saved me $, time and provided peace of mind knowing the service was done right. I found many of the core steps are similar to my Tenere so I feel your FJR & FZ service video’s are transferable to other bikes as well. Appreciate you sharing!
I’ve just changed mine to a Nitron R1 using your vid. Another job you’ve helped me complete. I’ll be setting the suspension up using your video too. Thank sfor all the help.
Super helpful video. I have a 2014 MT09 and have just ordered a Nitron sport shock set up for my weight. Am relatively new to doing my own maintenance and I really want to start doing jobs like this myself, will be using more of your videos!
Thank you for doing this video. I was on a budget so I went with the K-Tech Razor and I'm going to install it hopefully tomorrow. The pogo sticking on the rear factory shock has been driving me crazy. It's caused me to kick out the back end and do a small drift a few times, caused the back end to hop in some corners and just all around feels spongy and kinda reminds me of the old mashed potates and gravy suspension on like an old crown vic or something, just seems completely outdated and wouldn't have cost Yamaha too much to put a proper rear shock on the bike from the get go. On my 2018 I adjusted both fronts and set the dampening and I've gotten that one to be very planted and comfortable, no more brake dive and it's helped stabilize the rear more but definitely hasn't hidden the problem. I am looking forward to getting on it and being able to have more fun and overall will be safer to ride by getting rid of that pogo sticking. I'm 190lbs without gear and I have the front set down on the 2nd to last ring on the tops (so one ring showing) and have setup the rebound as well. I used to have it set to 2 rings showing and have adjusted the rear suspension one click tighter and that did make a difference but it still is doing all the stuff mentioned above, just more controllable.
Great video! If I could add another couple of tips - if you have an abba type stand that holds the bike up near the swingarm pivot, you can manipulate the rear linkage easier if you take out the lower dogbone linkage bolt (don't forget to replace on installing!) and you can regulate the wheel height by using a ratchet strap thru wheel and over seat. Means you can precisely regulate bolts lining up.
Just did this on my 2019 MT09 using an Ohlins 535. I will add that the top bolt doesn't just "knock out", my bike has two beefy hydraulic lines crossing the top of the bolt, they needed to be "massaged" aside. Ohlins also instructs to remove the lower dogbone bolt, I discovered that unless one DOES the lower shock bolt (delightfully recessed into the shock clevis making common wrenches nearly useless) won't get above the swing arm frame. Once there though sockets rule the day.
I am removing a Matris damper, and I couldn't get enough compression without moving the lower dog bolt. Fk me, that thing was on so tight, I would not have gotten it off without my 1/2 impact. And it totally mangled the nut
Hey! I know this is a long shot, but I'm going to swap out my shock soon. What bolt is the "lower dogbone" bolt? I'm not sure and don't want to loosen up the wrong bits. Cheers!
Not sure if it was mentioned but the 14-16 FZ09s have the oil drain bolt on the bottom of the pan so it's not flat like yours is. Either use towels to cushion the pan, or spread the rear using one of the other methods if you have an aftermarket exhaust.
Just to be clear, adding preload is clockwise and removing preload is counterclockwise? I gotta adjust mine because I get a unstable wobble at around 150kmh.
I am more concerned the bike's balance when the shock is removed. Would it be more stable if I use the center lift instead (in addition with the rear stand)? The center lift is just to prevent the bike from dropping.
have you looked into doing anything on the rear shock with the FJR? i know its the ES model, just trying to find out the options as i'm upwards of 33k miles and understand that's when these shocks start to wear.
So I only weigh about 160 in gear, but I ride the bike very hard. I also do not feel like dropping a grand on a shock, what do you think about the k-tech lite shock?
Thank you for this awesome video. Are you 99.9999% certain the catalytic converter/stock exauast will work as a jacking up point? I don't want to damage my exhaust. Alternatively I could place a 2/4 under the oil pan instead of a text book and this should allow the jack to lift via the oil pan and not the exhaust. Or I could place a few shims under one or the other and spread the weight between the exhaust and oil pan. Maybe I just answered my own question. Thanks again.
All these changes seems placebo affect to me but I respect your feelings because you are an experienced rider and a wise man. It's a great tutorial video as always for anyone who loves DIY maintanence on it's bike like me. Thanks. Greetings from Turkey.
I replaced on my MT-09 Tracer RN29 2015 first version (rusty) stock against newer modified stock shock. There is axial/lateral play on lower mount between shock bracket and 1RC-2217A-00 ARM, RELAY. How much lateral/axial play do you have on upper and lower mounts? Please show us this in video. Is this later/axial play necessary?
I have no idea how you got that bolt on the bottom back. I dropped my bike trying to lift it etc but I got work done and its awesome but I wish I have taken it to the shop and pay $60 instead of scratching my bike and my lowerback... very tricky thing to do. I had to buy tools to get to those bolts too. You should not make it look easy lol tell people the truth! without right tools and experience it will be a nightmare. especcialy if you are by yourself and no friend to help lol learned a lesson
Is it worth it to use the double clicker for a normal daily ride, and sometimes maybe going for a ride and maybe enjoy a few corners? Or just the single adjustable is enough? Can someone recommend?
Hi!! Thanks for your video, they are really great, very passionate about your work! I have a question about an absorber with external tank for compressione that I'm gonna install on the bike in the near future. Is it possibile to install the shock absorber in order to put the external tank on the right side of the bike?
I am attempting to install a Ohlins YA 535 on a 2018 Yamaha MT-09 and I followed your instructions but am not able to remove the rear (bottom) bolt as i do not have clearance. I have the front tire on a wheel choke. Should i have the front lifted with a triple tree and this will provide the clearance in need? Thank you for your help.
You mentioned it making easier to wheelie? If I have it in traction control 2 it still wont wheelie right? This is my second bike I usually ride in B mode and TC2 . after getting it flashed its still plenty fast but the front wheel wont come up. I still want to upgrade my suspension though
I visited both stohltech and penske websites and see zero products for 21+ MT09 in fact no mt09 products period shown at Penske....sigh sadly cause I really like what I see! Sooo I guess Ohlins?
Great Video! If you were buying this bike now, knowing what you know, would you buys the MT 09 SP or would you buy the standard MT 09 and make the suspension mods yourself?
I’m about to upgrade suspension on my 2018 MT 09. Probably going to go with this same rear but the front upgrade you did is just more than I feel capable of. I’m considering just upgrading the from springs for my weight according to race techs calculations (along with the fork oil) do you think I will be satisfied with that.? I don’t want to drop another $1000 on the from suspension.
TwoWheelObsession 😪thanks for the reply. I’ll be looking into some cheaper option then for now at least. I’m right at 230 lbs so the bike is under sprung front and rear for me from the factory.
Bought a replacement shock (Nitron) and now find that the ABS brake lines and 4 other lines block access to the top shock-bolt. The brake lines are really tight the others are held together with cable ties and can barely move. I can't use anything bigger than a small screwdriver blade through the frame window to just touch the bolt head and then only from an angle. Questions: Did you have this problem with access? Did the bolt just sit in the left side of the clevis while you removed and then replaced the shock? (If the bolt falls there is no access from above (ABS unit and lines) and from below it would require a tiny hand to get access.) Thanks in advance. Don
You're right. The lines can move enough it you apply force and everything lines up. There is no way of getting any sort of tool between the lines and the bolt, but those same lines prevent the bolt from falling out of the LHS of the clevis. Unfortunately when I used a screw driver blade to push the bolt back though the shock the bolt head didn't align with the detent on the clevis. I had to cut three cable ties and take out the bolt holding the lower ABS-lines junction block to loosen the lines enough to get a finger between the lines and the bolt head to align it. But without your UA-cam post and (speedy) response I would have probably paid the shop $150+ to install the new shock. So thanks again for the video(s) Don
10:42 newer modified stock shock have an opening i.imgur.com/60uj8Qd.jpg Are these serviceable now? No more throwaway piece? For what is this opening good/intended?
Thank you for the video. I own a 2017 FZ-09 as well. Forgive me, but I can't help but think that after all the upgrades I've done on my bike that I could have bought a better bike - say a Triumph Street Triple. Just saying. ...
That is true, and that's the point of the FZ series. They are bare bones bikes meant to be personalized and upgraded and are CHEAP. Still there are core differences between the platforms. For example I hate the riding position and pegs of the Street series but otherwise love the bike. But you certainly do pay for it. In the end I now have a bike perfectly suited to me, built exactly the way I wanted and it's still a good bit cheaper than a fully loaded ST equivalent. Not counting my labor of course ;)
Yes the Kawasaki shocks going on FZ MT09 are another internet legend. Most have to be modified, and only a couple of years of zzx9 or something like that are a close fit, others require some chopping away of the bike and some the hole in the shock needs enlarged. Not a problem for wreck it ralph that follows the internet! The Kawa shocks need to be correctly resprung and they also need to be rebuilt to be very good, which brings the price up to within $200 of getting a perfect fit Ohlins or other brands, which are down to about $550 american dollars now.
No doubt, it's not pocket change. But, seeing it in person will ease your mind. Riding on one, will make you a believer. Fully CNC'd aluminum, designed and produced in the US, and 100's of thousands of miles on the road and track to back the design up. This particular shock for the FZ-09 was a joint development between Penske and Stoltec Moto going on 4 years ago. Its continuously evolved over that time based on customer feedback, so back to the video: not an off the shelf item, and definitely not 'one size fits all'.
Good video, I found it easy to swap my shock today just by jacking the bike up by the right foot peg, it made a tripod with the side stand and front tire that was very stable. is this possible to do without a rear stand?
Jack Pistone you need to get the rear wheel off the ground. I used an Abba stand
The instruction on this video was great. I noticed our narrator was going “Barney Rubble” on us. I hope when he took a test ride he put on some shoes!

Pryce 191 I have the R2 shock about to install and the R22 fork kit. I love my nitron!

That reservoir mount is motorcycle jewelry! Just bought a 2024 XSR900; I forgot how crap stock suspensions are! ;-)
Yes they are!

LOL not even close. It's a dramatic difference. Once you experience it, you'll know.
Placebo lol. The stock shock is dire. There’s no way this change is placebo.

Stoltec forks
Great Video! If you were buying this bike now, knowing what you know, would you buys the MT 09 SP or would you buy the standard MT 09 and make the suspension mods yourself?
There is no sp here
The SP suspension is also very low quality junk. It can not be serviced. No compression adjuster. Horrible
Love the Steel Cap Boots you are wearing.
Nope.
Very helpfull ! Thank's from France !
Should be all set for those straight runs to Wawa.
+Jack Petracci mmmm wawa

TwoWheelObsession 😪thanks for the reply. I’ll be looking into some cheaper option then for now at least. I’m right at 230 lbs so the bike is under sprung front and rear for me from the factory.
@@jasonsmith9161 if you still haven't upgraded and you are on a budget still then look at the YSS cartridge kit. Around £240
Do you have a link to the bracket?
Hi I need that support made at 8 that you see in the video at 17:53. I live in Italy, can you tell me where you bought it? Thank you
I said I got it on ebay. Search for 'FZ09 penske' and you'll see it.
Daniele Pi did you find ?
Daniele Pi stoltec now sells the canister mount on their site.

You don’t need to remove the bolt just slide it enough out of the way. The lines move enough.
You're right. The lines can move enough it you apply force and everything lines up.

Nice one.
Excellent video!
Stoltec has some nice parts on there website. Did you go with the double or triple clicker?
Double
Are you still happy with the fork and rear shock upgrades from Stoltec a year later?
LOVE IT

TwoWheelObsession I get it. How does your new suspension compare to the Öhlins on the ST?
Equivalent. Pensky/Ohlins is all about the best deal you can get, both are top notch. The custom valving and springs in my forms make them perfect.
I tried using the same method/ process to swap out my 17 model shock for a zx10 unit.
What a disaster. Resulted in taking off the tank. 4 hrs later
That’s because it’s not a direct fit for the fz-09.. it’s for a zx10

Yes
Just looked it up and that bracket is now included.
Yep he hooked up with the guy last month
Why didn’t yo wait and get the Tracer or the Super Tenere?
+Dre C. Huh? Apples and oranges
Great videos!
Not to disrespect anyone but why not get the SP model😊
It didn't exist back then.
2 questions ..where did you get those mirrors? and where did you get that seat and how comfy is it?
The channel has vids on everything
this dude sounds like seth rogan😂
Cool
Best
Geez that thing is expensive! But I guess they run in that range

$1000 and they give you a jubilee clip to mount it, lol. A black zip tie would have been a step up.
They now do, after my video went up
