Can I just say. All these community co-op modes that are popping up. Are amazing I can't wait to see a few games of this played! As a new player with very few models so far. These type of modes are a awesome!
The Crucible of Heroes scenario is almost EXACTLY how I was introduced to 40k 3rd ed in Bristol GW. I was in charge of the space marines, was surrounded and had to break out to through the enemies lines, played by my dad, so a little different. I love the idea of small scale skirmish with 40k rules... what Kill Team was always supposed to be.
I am a little sad this doesn't have the cool SP system and purchasable stuff that I enjoy from Horde mode *but* I am also super stoked that my comment on the hero mode video came to fruition. Great addon guys!
I love this homebrew content. I'd love to see your 11th edition. I've been enjoying the exercise. My 11th dropped to-wound rolls and unit activation, amongst other changes, and it's been a blast playing non-GW Warhammer games with friends.
I heard Gaunt's Ghosts and had to immediately stop cooking and like! Very much looking forward to that batrep, and I'm really digging that TTT seem to be keen on trying to expand and evolve the narrative, immersive, and descriptive side of 40k. You have a massive fan of that sort of content right here. Only just started the DnD campaign too and it's, no pun intended, *chef's kiss*.
Heck yeah this sounds awesome Spider! I’ll have a look at it, maybe introduce it to the club I go to to help get some of the newer people actually learning and playing 40K (less models for them to worry about, less hassle!) 🔥🔥🔥
Please do one of these with Custodes heroes facing down Black Legion. A Blade Champion, Shield-Captain with Praesidium Shield and Melta Spear, Allarus Captain with Castellan Axe. We will see the full Lore accurate Custodes.
Ive been working on something for my playgroup similar to this. More like dnd light or heroquest game that mimics the feel of space marine 2. The idea was each player gets one space marine model (not necessarily a character). I want to capture more of a narative feel with mission objectives and such, but i will definitely be borrowing some of these as i iron things out. Nice video
I run a club at school. The kids are really enjoying hoard mode. We’ll be adding this to our list of games to play. Ideal for them because they have a limited number of models.
400 points gets me a quite a lot of pretty killy Aeldari; 2 Autarchs (because 2 datasheets) Farseer, Shadowseer and Troupe Master. Although the Phoenix Lords, despite not getting extra spicy weapons, also scary!
Sounds like loads of fun as a Necron player my heroes would be: The Awakened Dynasty. Overlord with Arrow as the warlord, Chronomancer, Hexmark, Royal Warden, and Skorpek Lord, as the team with points for stealth, veil of darkness, and 4+++ enhancements.
Now you just need a rule packed to elevate a single model from a unit to be a character so people can take a striking scorpion, heavy intercessor with heavy bolter, or kasrkin sniper. I've been assuming minumum 4 wounds, plus 1 leadership, improved WS and BS by 1, and writing flavorful abilities and warlord abilities.
As you get used to this and hone it etc... You need to work towards playing out Seven Samurai. It's probably close to working for that already. Sounds really good. I woz thinking... With your current system as is. You could have Seven Warbosses. 🙂 Have I got Seven Warbosses? I just might have. 🤪
Not checked the whole video yet but what about the Astrs Militarium HQ? Can you use the full Platton Command Squad as character or the Tank Commander? Or just single characters? Edit: 15:00 Tank Commanders yes, but no "Lone Operative" Rule for them. Im still unsure about like a command squad?
I'm thinking 2500 points is way too much--it hurt my interest to try it out because I don't have that many minis. I'd also limit it to a max number of wounds per model/unit. However, with a respawn mechanic for lost horde units, I think a smaller points limit would work better. Do character units have to keep within squad coherence? I see that with these rules, I can't have my Company Heroes out on the table as it was with the original Hero Mode rules--and using Gaunt's Ghosts actually isn't covered in the rules created. Perhaps bodyguard units should be allowed, at minimum size? I'd love someone to whip up an Battlescribe file for this.
It follows all the normal rules for 40K for coherency, so if your character is part of a unit of characters like Gaunt and his Ghosts, they would maintain coherency. If they’re by themselves, then they move solo. In instances where you don’t have enough, just recycle the battleline units. You’ll find the heroes cut through them fairly easily! We have an example game coming this Saturday for your reference.
No they aren’t. Company Heroes and similar units are something that I would consider writing into faction specific building rules in a second version of the ruleset. For now, you can pretty much make that squad out of regular characters from space marines anyway :)
@jeffallison09 True 😅 Honestly you could take the command squad in hero mode, they’ll work just fine. They won’t benefit from Trademark Weapons though, but will join your character who will.
Of all the novel characters they’ve released over the years, and how well they have been done such as the ghosts, the fact they haven’t done Talos and first claw is criminal
I feel like agents may be dangerous in this as a horde. Eversor warlord able to get to your warlord from anywhere and a vindicare assassin running around sounds bad. Mix in deathwatch kill teams and subductors.
Question on a point of clarification. Are the horde models on an objective required to remove from nearest to the objective to farthest from it? I can see situations where a hero's on an objective, kills a load of models, which get removed from the back, leaving the horde unit still having more OC points and keeping the objective. It seems sportsmanly and thematic that models around the hero should die/be removed first, but we all know how the RAW vs RAI thing goes.
As someone who does NOT own any Gaunts Ghosts. The closest I can get is PCS. P.s. I would love if the channel could clarify if a PCS could take an Ogryn bodyguard or not.
Ogryn Bodyguards aren't Characters (strangely) so they wouldn't be eligible to be taken. However if you wanted to run one that would be fine, though we'd suggest he runs around by himself, to keep with the Hero theme 🙂
What if you're wanting to run a Kroot Horde army, but Kroot Mercenaries are only Battleline in the Kroot Detatchment? Gentleman's agreement allow it or are you out of luck?
Gentleman's agreement, the whole point is you're playing with friends to make a cinematic game, something like that would get in the way of it 🙂 Just no Detachment rules for those Kroot!
@tabletoptactics How do you think this will work for Boarding Actions? I've been mulling over running a narrative campaign for a friend where they're exploring a Space Hulk/my CSM's Big Bad Ship. Would 1000 points for the horde work, you think? Have you tested this when adding extra wounds to the heroes? Any thoughts on how the hero list rules would work with Crusade rules? Thank you for this promising new mode and the time taken to answer my questions. This looks very much like what I've been needing for the campaign.
I spent this whole video, pausing it, switching over to my army building spreadsheets and throwing together 400 points of Black Templar heros and 2500 points of Tyranids I own. I'm sure my Tyranid buddy will love to HordeMaster the Tyranids.
Any guidance on what to do for a faction that literally can't get to 400 points when only taking one of each character? Leagues of Votann, for example?
Try to aim to get as close as possible, but it will be trickier for some. As I playtest it more, I can help flesh out rules for different factions like Votann. I suspect they’ll get some more options when a new codex drops though too, as the range is still quite small.
I think the only issue I have with it is many characters have abilities that only work when they are leading a unit, and they will never be leading a unit in this game mode. All Characters' points costs are at least partially based on their abilities, which makes them not terribly accurate when they are not in a unit.
Okay, Tsons with Ahriman and an Exalted on disks for the *cough* heroes could be really cool here. But it'll be balanced cause the points make it so you only get 1 more character, choose wisely. And Ahriman alone, without a unit to lead, isnt all that... hrm. Gotta try it out! Exalted on disk, infernal master, Terminator Sorc, Tzaangor Shaman. The question is, all of those guys have a "while leading a unit" but of course no unit to lead. Do they get that rule? Your comment at the 14 min mark is unclear if you cant START with a unit.
Yes, it's explained in the Hero Mode Rules - if you have an ability that says "whilst leading a unit", basically change it to "this unit". That way Characters can use their abilities in Hero Mode without having the Bodyguards 🙂
@tabletoptactics and thanks to the hero mode rules, she'll still get access to re-roll hits and wounds as if she's leading a unit. I do love that design
@@tabletoptactics oh you all were talking about character units not character models which made me assume you can take em and as long as they're joined its a character unit (might be worth changing the wording to clarify!)
Yeah this is something I’ve considered. I’ll introduce that into an update if it doesn’t balance out well. So far it’s been ok, but need more games :) Lawrence
Sounds pretty interesting, though not a fan of limiting the hero squad to one army rule. Makes it a bit difficult to run a mix of chapters or a Rogue Trader team with a mixture of imperium, xenos, and mutants.
@tabletoptactics that's completely understandable for a 1v1 game of heros vs horde. One person keeping track of 3+ different army rules would get fiddly. But for multiplayer, where each player has their own hero, i could see it being no more complicated than a normal game of 40k. Probably easier than that, since you only have 1-2 models to remember datasheet rules for.
Ghaunts Ghosts!! Epic models that I always shoehorn into my list but never feel as good as they should.
Hero mode sounds like exactly what 40k needs!
Imagine a defence of Hinzerhaus scenario!
Imagine a cadia defense horde mode. Playing as the black templars at the wall of martyrs

I definitely cannot wait to try this out!
Cannot wait to try! Also hoping you guys have regular BatReps of Hero Mode! Cannot wait for Ragnar Blackmane to cut up some hordes
I NEED A HERO!!!!!!
Absolute banger.
Does he have to be fast, strong, and built for the fight?
Now I have that stuck in my head while at work 😂😂😂

You need to do a Angron demon horde VS Grey Knight HEROS to recreate the scene from Armageddon.

Thank you for making this!
This sounds super cool
Seems really cool. Trying it out today!
Great idea!! How many units would i be able to pick up and teleport as a grey knight hero squad (no battle size is specified)

I'm going to give this a go on sunday. Thinking 4 or k warbosses on a bug hunt.
Gonna try and use this to get some friends into 40k
Everyone needs a friend like Bard! His enthusiasm is infectious.
His enthusiasm is insufferable

My immediate thought was recreating DOW2 with Kaptin Bluddflag

OOOH, I know it is currently 20 points over, but 1 of each Imperial Assassin? *grabby hands*
Darktide style batrep when, gentlemen?
Paladin bricks and drago could be unstoppable
Alas Paladins are Bodyguards, so you wouldn't be able to use them in Hero Mode 🙂
Can this be used with older editions of 40K? I have an older firstborn Black Templars Marshal I would love to use in this...
It should work pretty well retroactively.
Time for me to bring out my Emperor's Champion from 3rd edition then! 😁
I have one request grey knight heroes versus demon hordes
Will you guys make a hero mode game inspired by Infinite and the Divine?
Take a Transcendent C'tan (Orikan in God form) and Trazyn and a Royal Warden as a surrogate.

No, they can have multiple characters, but only 1 warlord :)

Not long before you have your own game, line of minis etc.
That’s always been a long term passion project/dream of mine. Let’s see what the future brings :) - Lawrence

"only character units may be selected"
I assume that means no bodyguard units, only units that naturally have the character keyword?
Correct, no Bodyguards 🙂
3 kings!!!!
tbh i think you should keep it that heroes have revive each other

Hey, is would this technically be a musou game?
Effectively yes 😅
is the link broken for anyone else or is it just my bum internet?
I figured it out! Looks sick and I will certainly be introducing this to my play group
The sheet doesn’t mention the change to the leader rules…. Ie: removing the “while leading a unit” language
Edit. Just spotted it but it probably deserves its own bulletin board point :)
Good call, I’ll change that in a future update to a bullet.
After all is every bit as epic as the other rules :)
