    I have the 23mm, f1.2, the 27mm f2 and the 35mm f1.2 The 23mm f1.2 has the same issue as the 18mm - that very short arc between infinity and 2m and I think I know why. It looks like Cosina is using the same lens body and helicoid for the 23mm and the 35mm. That results in an adequate throw for the 35, but a short one for the 23mm. I think they're doing the same thing for the 27mm and the 18mm - same body, same helicoid, same problem - adequate throw for the 27mm, inadequate for the 18mm.
    It's irritating that Cosina chose not to design an appropriate helicoid for each focal length, instead of cheaping out like this, especially considering the prices of these lenses.
    The good news is though, once we're aware of the issue and why, it's not the deal breaker that one would think. I've gotten used to the 23mm and I'll get used to the 18mm.

    Love the Ultron 27mm f/2. And would love to love this lens, too, but I really wish it was f/2 instead of f/2.8. At the expense of being a bit bigger.

    Exactly my reaction when I saw the focusing scale. For me that's a big miss from Voigt, and I will not spend money for it. And people who think that there is no DOF issue on a 18mm are wrong (I have a XF 14mm and have anyway to care for DOF if I want pin sharp at the right place).

    The reason why there are not 3 and 5 meters is because of the Aps size, the depth of field increases exponentially after the 2 meters mark. In other words in terms of the distance scale of the markings there 3 and 5 meters are too close to even bothee put them.

      Not yet, but Fujifilm X-pro3 doesn't show the 18mm frame lines. So no parallax correction - you can test with 18mm F2 in manual mode. You just see the green arrows - the OVF is not made for this focal length.

  • @StefanBeyer

    "this is apsc and you can be more lose with the focusing throw" -- why? this is a silly statement. 18mm is 18mm, sensor size only matters for field of view. The DOF of 18mm is the DFO of 18mm. You are comparing this to a 35mm lens, which makes no sense whatsoever.
    There is no point in marking anything between 2 meters and infinity. It's just in focus at that distance.

    • @Tudor_Mateescu
      @Tudor_Mateescu  7 місяців тому

      Even at f2.8 ? I assure you I have the Ultron 27mm F2 and the focus throw is too short - I said it's ok (but not perfect and ideal - for many a deal breaker).
      I'm betting it's also the case here - not ideal. But it's working - because "look is aps-c 18mm dof" the geeks will say.
      In real world use I need more focus throw - I'm not buying an f2.8 to shoot it at f11.

    • @StefanBeyer
      @StefanBeyer 7 місяців тому +1

      @@Tudor_Mateescu Not quite, according to the math of this, but that's ntot a suitable aperture for using the zone focusing scale anyway.
      The point is that this scale behave exponentially, whereas the focus throw is lienar. So if you provide a lot of space between 2 and infinity on a 18mm lens you also need to give a lot of space in the near focus area and end up with a very silly focus throw for such a wide lens.

    • @Tudor_Mateescu
      @Tudor_Mateescu  7 місяців тому +2

      Math doesn't take photos. I told you the Ultron focus throw is crippled (too short no 5m mark)- it's also the case here - it could be better.

    • @StefanBeyer
      @StefanBeyer 7 місяців тому

      @@Tudor_Mateescu "Math doesn't take photos" - Hmn, yes it does ... it models the physical world, in this case the behavior of light in optics.
      Seriosuly. though, in a wide-angle lens a short focus throw (i.e. the distance my hand has to turn) is preferrable. Since focus should also be linear, and DOF behaves exponentially, having a very short distance on dial between 2 meters and infinity is a necessary design trade-off.
      You can't have both.

    I am sure that once
    you have the lens on the camera, then all of the many comments you made about the focusing scale and all the questions you pose will be answered as you look through the viewfinder, bearing in mind that's its a wide angle lens and from F4 everything will be in focus anyway. So, I'm not working about it and look forward to pulling the trigger in this one.

    • @Tudor_Mateescu
      @Tudor_Mateescu  7 місяців тому

      I have Ultron 27mm and by using it this days is confirming my worries. The ergonomics because of this scale (no 5m mark on Ultron) aren't great. Is not a deal breaker (for the moment) because the image is stellar - if you have the people in focus. But it could be better. Probably the experience will be the same on 18mm f2.
      Again - not a deal breaker. I will still buy it and use it. But on full frame we have better options and controls.
      I'll explain more in a feature video about this design of the scale.

      @@davidbrighten2572maybe not as good but from what I’ve read, neither this Voigtlander is sharp wide open. That means that if I stop down my 100$ TTArtisan from f/1.4 to f/2.8 both lens are equally bright and the TTArtisan with be good enough for a 17mm lens. Maybe I was lucky with my copy but that’s what is bothering me, why I keep letting GAS take over me on this videos trying to find reasons to buy a better lens when I cannot se a reason (aside weather sealed missing) to let go my TTArtisan 17mm. A bit soft on the corners wide open and hard vignette… that’s all this lens suffers and I really want to have the chance to compare my copy with the 18mm Voigtlander but please for who says TTArtisan 17 is not good should see some of my imagens (maybe I was lucky).
