    Given that Fuji management seem intent on under supplying the market and driving users away from their products, I'd pay the extra for the Fujinon if I could find one, but after 3 years it's still sold out literally everywhere, so it's not a hard decision because it's not Fujinon vs TTArtisans, it's TT vs no lens.

    When you said the cats eye would be either a deal-breaker or a deal-maker, I think that’s correct. The somewhat swirling bokeh is the reason I ordered this. In general, I suspect TTArtisans won’t really be able to compete with Fuji or other OEM lenses across an entire lens lineup in terms of sharpness and specs. Where they could compete is in terms of optical character. My dream is that they come out with a 40mm f/2 with a biotar design, to lean into the kind of swirl that a Zeiss Jena or Helios 44 would provide, but with the convenience and usability of modern AF and aperture control. Vintage character with autofocus lenses might be a great niche for a company like TTA.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Рік тому +4

      yes, some people hate the cats eye, but some would love it for it's character! Let's see if TTArtisan read your comment and maybe it'll give them some idea what to create next :)

    • @andersdenkend
      @andersdenkend Рік тому +2

      Yes, yes, yes! I am thinking the same. If they try to compete just with price, they might have a difficult time convincing some people. I'd love for them to make a Helios like "artsy" lens. I'd buy that in a heartbeat. 😂

    I own the TTA 27/2.8, it's subject isolation & bokeh @F2.8 is better, than the Fujinon XF 27/2.8, plus it does add some vintage vibes, in terms of rendering. If you want much better IQ - just get the manual focus Voigtländer Ultron 27/F2 - between them, i can't seriously recommand the Fujifilm for such a high price (439-449 EUR into germany), it's really less good, than the 23mm F2, into contrast. For that high price, even with WR and aperture ring, i'd put a bit money aside, and really get the Ultron, which is the much better lens - into contrast. But if you need a small, pancake-esque AF lens, the TTA is all the way to go ! (I shoot Fujifilm since the original X100)
    (edit) Be sure - if you own or want to buy the TTArtisans 27/2.8 AF - update to the latest v1.1.1 Firmware (Fujifilm X mount) which is avialable at their homepage. You can use the provided USB dock (rear lens cap with USB-C port to update the firmware via your PC)
    At the time of writing, this TTA 27/2.8 XF AF goes for ~125 EUR via Aliexpress, i paid really more into 2023 !

      This is just the comment I was looking for! I have been torn between these three 27mm lenses (Viltrox 27 images looked great but I'm wanting a small lens), and your experience fits what I've been hearing. I have just about convinced myself to get the Voigtlander for the looks and the f2, even though it doesn't have autofocus or WR but that price keeps me asking, "Is the Voigtlander worth THAT much more?"
      Do you find you enjoy the Voigtlander for both color and black and white photography? From what I've found online, most of the images that stood out to me were black and white for some reason. I wondered if that was just a coincidence or if this Ulton was especially good at black and white or something.

    • @marcp.1752

      @@el0blaino The Ultron 27/2 is really *that* much better - which does make a difference. Unfortunately, i've had not bought it yet, as for cost reasons, but played a bit into a store. And yes, i really want to get it, but as often into life, other things come first...

    I really like the TTArtisan. For me the difference between them aren’t worth the price difference. If the Fuji was $300 or under I might have considered it but the fact the TTArtisan is only $150 is what sold me. I was very surprised to see that it’s actually an excellent lens with a lot of character and probably worth a lot more than the asking price. I did get the 2022 upgraded version.
    One of the things I really like is that it has a USB port in the rear cap which makes it easy to upgrade and doesn’t leave an eyesore on the lens by having the port on the lens itself.
    I think if money is no object the Fuji lens is probably better but if you are on a budget you aren’t really compromising by using the TTArtisan and it’s a very good lens in its own right.

    I've been using the ttartisan on my XE2 for nearly 6 months, and I like a lot how portable my street set up has become, mostly shoot between f5. 6 and f8 so cat eye shaped bokeh is not an issue for me buuut vignetting has started to be consoderably annoying, I mean sometimes it adds certain "character" To the images but i would rather add it in post only when necessary, I regularly shoot the streets at night and the vignette makes everithing look too dark at night , so I'm thinking about buying the fuji, other than that the tt artisan has been really fun to use and has become the permanent lens on that camera.

    Great comparison Richard! In the first few clips testing sharpness, the brightness and color rendition appeared to be quite different between the two lenses - can you talk a bit about that? Is the TTArtisan 1/3 stop or so darker?
    The internal focus mechanism (vs. Fuji’s external) could also be a pretty considerable difference, at least for anybody thinking of adding an anamorphic adapter for example (so the focusing motor doesn’t have to push and pull the extra weight) and theoretically for better sealing, even though the Fuji is WR rated and the TT isn’t.

      hey Jordan, thanks for watching! For brightness, since i took those photos outdoor and there was around 10-20 minutes from the first to last photo shot, the brighness might have changed a bit so i can't say for sure if it's the ambient lighting changed or the lens itself. Re colours, there is some small but noticeable difference as you can see in most photos.

But hey, where I live it is sold for less than half the price than the fuji 27mm R WR, being on a budget and wanting a light street photography kit you can think of this and match it with maybe a second hand x-e2/3 ot x-t20/30 and that'd be good and cheap.

The TT Artisan looks like such a bargain with strong performance at a great price, and the size difference seems negligible. But low light performance is important, and I'm hearing that if I can give up autofocus, the tiny Voigtlander 27mm f2 would give me noticeably better images and an extra stop of light. My only minor criticism is that USB lens base. Firstly the updates don’t work with any Mac based system. A little annoying if you don’t have a Windows PC handy.
    Secondly, it adds some bulk on the lens. This little lens is so small that it’s easy to fit in your pocket but the base makes it a little more difficult to carry. A regular Fuji base cap fits on to it but doesn’t lock in place so you really need to carry a spare if you plan to go out with a 2 lens solution.
    Very minor issues of course, but slightly irritating at times :(

      Check the connector is clean? Does changing the aperture shows the updated aperture value on your camera? And see if you can update the firmware?

    The fairest review of the TTartisans yet compared to the Fuji. My copy arrived yesterday and optically in real world use I see precious little difference between it and my original XF 27mm. AF seems about the same if a bit quieter, though it would not work at first on my X-E3. It worked perfectly on my X-T20 and X-T1 and when I put it back on the X-E3 it worked perfectly. Go figure that one! The aperture ring is a welcome addition over the original XF model and on the X-T1 I prefer the slightly larger form factor of the TTArtisans over the XF. I could not care less about WR as it is going to be on my non WR bodies most of the time. Honestly given the price difference between the WR Fuji and the TTartisans, I can't see why most people would not be happy with the latter model.

    I like the Fujifilm 27mm but frankly I think it is overpriced for what it is. I have a few questions about the TT Artisans lens. Firstly does the in camera lens corrections correct for vignetting on this lens or is just limited to Fuji lenses? Secondly would a larger third party lens hood help with the flaring problem? Thank you for your review.
