Interesting bits of information that might be helpful--- I was looking through my old Chevrolet Service News issues and the Sept-Oct 1967 publication states that the Muncie's "slinger on the clutch gear bearing is to prevent chips from entering the bearing and causing a subsequent failure." Ostensibly- more of a bearing debris shield, though they also refer to it as an " oil slinger." They also state that the use of the slinger "requires slight changes in the clutch gear" ie: machined down to provide additional dimension to put it in. They state the "gear and slinger will service past models" and "the slinger must not be removed when (this new setup is) used with past models" Bottom line-you need to assure some clearance for the input welding to the output shaft -as well as having too much clearance spacing. Same service bulletin also states the new 1968 3 and 4 speed transmissions models use the plastic speedometer drive gear with the clip.
Slingers were used from 65 and up. No changes were ever required to compensate for the .030" movement in. No gears were ever machined. I only recommend you NOT add one to a used gearset that never had one since the maindrive section could make gear noise. There was never a clearance issue with the inside of the input welding up against the output unless some idiot decided to add additional shims or triple stack slingers. I have seen welding issues when people do that. The slinger acts as a shield but does help oil flow dumping out of the front during hard braking. If GM was really concerned about metal chips getting into the bearing they would have used a shielded rear bearing which was more prone to getting chips in it from people grinding reverse. So you have to understand that some of these service bulletins have merit and some are useless. I have a few binders worth of service bulletins. The new transmissions I build now use sealed bearings.

Hi Paul, great video again and currently soaking my Hurst shifter on a M21 Muncie thats going into a 64 Chevy C10 in paint thinner now and following your vid. Also I have a 1964/65 Saginaw steel case. I remember you saying you were going to do a rebuild video on one but I have not seen it. If I send you my Saginaw and the rebuild kit can you do a video for others to view? Thanks Paul for you sharing of information to help us DIY's
Can you help me identify? I have a Muncie with 2 grooves in the main shaft, a case number of 3885010; a date stamp of P01011; a tail case of 3846429. There are six large font digits 163065 that don't match the vin of my 70 TA across the top of the case front. I'm stumped on the P01011 number and the large numbers?
Your Video totally skipped over the installation of the front bearing retainer. I rebuilt a 1969 worn out M-21 into a M-22 and once I bolted up the FBR to the case it binds up the shaft. Is there a recommend end play spec? Is there a shim kit that I'm missing or what?
I have learned a lot from your videos as of late. I recently pick up a m20 for my nova and its been great. I do like to make it stronger eventually, I been reading a lot and came across this video a while back and some info online. I heard I can do a M22w gear set in my m20, but only issues i have would be my counter pin its a 7/8 not 1 inch. So my question is could i have that bore out to fit the 1 inch pin or do I get a main case to fit that?.
I took off the input shaft bearing retainer on my M-20 Muncie there were many small pieces of ball bearing, bummer, What would have caused 3 ball bearings to fall out of my main drive gear bearing ? it is a used early 70's M20 I just purchased to go in a project.
Can this bearing be replaced easily from the front without going internally or does it have to be pressed off by someone who know what their doing? Learning much good info from your videos also a big fan of Jeff Beck!
I'm rebuilding my M20 out 68 chevelle. I've done a few but when i pull out the cluster gear i only had 4 spacers. When i went to install the cluster gear i used all 6 spacers. I can't get the cluster in the case. have you seen this? It goes in fine with just the 4 spacers. I'm using all original gears, just a basic rebuild because noisy bearing. Thanks Sam
Question: Normally I've seen you swap input shafts to convert to a sealed system. You didn't this time. Why is that? Customer wanted to keep the old M21 input shaft for historic/financial reasons?
+Larry Bolan Nope. Its because we are using a stock case. The sealed inputs use the wider bearing. If I am using an aftermarket Supercase that utilizes the wider bearing than I can convert to a full sealed system. Factory cases have no provisions for the wider bearing as well as have enough material on the extension housing to thread it for a vent which is required when going fully sealed. You may find people selling adapter kits to convert to a wider sealed bearing to use with a stock case. I do not recommend these or see any advantage.
Great video Paul. I've got your book and rebuild kit, so getting ready to start my first time M21 rebuild. Have a simple question. How do you tell which gear and slider is which? I'm guessing the diameter of the ring?
My dad purchased a 1985 fiero dont ask me why. It has a m17 trans, he is complaining of the clutch arm engaging / disengaging arm is stuck. How is this fixed does anyone know what he is refering to ? thanks
The Fiero had eithe a Muncie FWD 4 speed mounted in the back as well as a Getrag 5speed. I think the M17 was a 4 speed. The clutch Fork was cable actuated from what I recall. So the cable may have broken or is frozen.
Great videos Paul,I really enjoy them.I bought your book and think it is very good but had a question on the sequence of disassembly. You had removed the reverse Idler from the case before you had removed the gear assembly, just made me do a double take.Other than that great book and great videos!
I put a new m22 gear set in my muncie all 4 gears shift fine but when you put it in reverse its locked up I have to put a rag on the input shaft and a pipe wrench to brake it loose why is that ?
How about actually contacting the person for support you purchased the gears from? Inferior parts, poor assembly, rings that fit to high on the cone, or a gear cone that is too high can cause this. I actually check everything I sell and ship, others never even open up the boxes and reship. Just because the gears are"italian" doesn't mean they are not subject to defects. I have quite a few defective Italian gears.
GearBoxVideo how much would you charge me to rebuilt it, it ran good when I pulled it out but I leaks alot also Im thinking of connecting it to a chevy engine and I was wondering if it is compatable and what you would recommend?
Man I have to say you sir are a Genius. Well maybe just to me. I ready enjoy your videos. I know you said you are only doing race Applications but I will be ordering your book do you think I could rebuild my own transmission with only garage tools?
The only important basic tools are good retaining ring pliers and sometimes you will need a press. If you plan on doing more work on your car perhaps a cheap press is worth having anyway
I have 4 Ford Thunderbird SCs. 2 are manual. They are very specific transmissions that are partially shared with the F150. Nobody has a video of a proper M5r2 build. Can you or an affiliate do a build on one?
Currently I am not accepting these types of jobs. I do sell gearset and parts for people who wish to do it themselves. I am booked solid into the new year
Please email me at support@5speeds.com with your current transmission's casting #s and specs such as splines on both shafts. Enclose your name address and phone and I will get a quote for you.
I am sure there are lots of supposed re-builders out there or "Parts Replacers" What Paul Does is Blue Print a Transmission .. He also seems to know about weak points and upgrades that have been made over the years.. It appears he knows the aftermarket sources for improved parts.. The Hot Rod Magazines always mention M-22 Rock Crushers.. I have no idea that the difference is between M-20 21 or 22 . I am going to assume they are heavier and stronger than a Borg Warner T-10 My Impression is the M-22 maybe went more with Big Block Engines.. When I ordered my Z-28 Camaro in 1979 I chose the close ration Trans thinking of road racing .. Wrong need up doing more drag racing where the lower 1st gear would have been better with a Wide ration trans,. I think my Doug Nash 5 speed has a 3.23 first gear or 3,27 which was a huge improvement off the line . My guess is the Borg warner T-10 is lighter and cheaper.. I am sure Paul explains this in a book or in a Video.. Also I noticed that Paul works bare handed. I never saw a mechanic on youtube before that didn't wear gloves.. ja ja ja I am 57 never wore gloves either except of course in the parts washer ect or handing sharp gears surfaces ect.. and have not yet died from cancer.. @GearBoxVideo
Yes I noticed that you wear gloves some times.. I have a barrel of diesel .. A mineral spirits dunk tank . Then a parts washer with mineral spirits.. I like to use a pressure washer to clean big parts.. Mostly big trucks .. So my parts are pretty clean but the time I get them in the Mineral Spirits parts washer.. My life time experience with car transmissions .. Stock Turbo 350 does not hold up .. Power Glides are indestructible . 700R4 if you pull a trailer in overdrive you are doomed.. My '79 Z-28 Camaro I should have ordered wide Ratio T-10 not close ration .. My bad.. the turbo 350 would have been $77 extra .. Stock Dough Nash 5 speed shifts slower than Molasses in January at high RPM's They do make them in Overdrive now but Tremac looks better to me .. and I learned that GearBoxVideo upgrades the Dough Nash to shift better by blueprinting and better . synchros.. It looks to me like there are enough Old Classic Muscle Cars and race cars out there using gear boxes to keep Paul Cangialosi until he is an old Man .. My Question is will these 7-8 or 10 Speed Autos outperform and hold up in Z-28 Camaros and Vettes.. The Z-28 Camaro with Paddle shift and Magnetic ride suspension is putting very Expensive European cars to shame on the Nuremberg ring.. My guess is they are very expensive.. @GearBoxVideo Also it looks like Borg Warner T-10 replaced Muncie M-20-21-22 .. is the Borg Warner as strong ?
Paul, great stuff :>) I have had 4 or five Muncie 4 speeds apart over the years and thought I knew a little.....until I watched all your videos. I sure picked up some VG info on inspection. I like the way you install the complete gear shaft with the input shaft (minus front bearing) in place. When doing this does it help to have the 1-2 and 3-4 sliders in any particular position ?Thanks again.Mike Angelo
Excellent Video , We can always learn from others .. I have to say I've been doing Muncie's going back into the 1960's .. I still do a few for the local guys .. Quick story > I was flat towing my 70 SS LS6 M22 back from the track when the trans went into gear ( so I thought ) After teardown , first gears had welded onto the main shaft . After 40+ years I replaced first gear & mainshaft /rebuild kit and sold it ..
Happens often when flat towing. The mainshaft is spinning within the gear but the transmission oil level isn't really moving, so the first gear welds because it has the largest surface speed of any gear. The other common issue is burnt out pilot rollers because as the oil travels to the rear when moving forward the pilot is completely out of the oil reservoir.
When parts sources get stabilized and I don't know when that will be. Not interested in taking in work I can't get out and would be cluttering up the shop for months.
I never lower prices for anyone. I get that question every week. I think the worst thing you can do to someone is offer to sell at your first price and then lower it. First it implies that your work is overvalued and second tells the customer you will willing to rip them off for the extra 25 dollars!
@@GearBoxVideo That was what a customer asked me a while back. When we did carry outs.I quit selling them for obvious reasons. Would rather see them go else where. Not worth the trouble.

have you ever built a 1951 Packard 3 speed
Johnny Pasillas Yes. Years ago. I still have parts and access to parts.
GearBoxVideo how much would you charge me to rebuilt it, it ran good when I pulled it out but I leaks alot also Im thinking of connecting it to a chevy engine and I was wondering if it is compatable and what you would recommend?
Johnny Pasillas does your unit have overdrive?
GearBoxVideo yes it does but I have no Idea If it works.
The OD parts are hard to come by. I don't do rebuilds, I sell parts for domestic manual transmissions, mainly new and vintage stuff.
Shame kids dont have shop teachers like this in person anymore
Hey any new videos coming up?
Yes, finishing the ST10 video and a TKO video. Been really busy building units so video edits have to wait.
I can't wait for that one I've had one since I was eighteen and I'm 54 now, bullet proof,.......within reason of course.
How can I get upgrade parts from you
My website is www.5speeds.com.. all my info and store is there
I have 4 Ford Thunderbird SCs. 2 are manual. They are very specific transmissions that are partially shared with the F150. Nobody has a video of a proper M5r2 build. Can you or an affiliate do a build on one?
+lilmangofast If someone would supply me with a transmission and parts I would.
+GearBoxVideo One of the issues Im pushing through is getting parts. Unfortunatly finding any M5r2 RKE parts are rare.
I could. Have used. That a few months ago
awesome stuff man.
what do you charge to Convert M21 to M22???
Currently I am not accepting these types of jobs. I do sell gearset and parts for people who wish to do it themselves. I am booked solid into the new year
@@GearBoxVideo whats it cost for everything to switch over to M 22
Please email me at support@5speeds.com with your current transmission's casting #s and specs such as splines on both shafts. Enclose your name address and phone and I will get a quote for you.
do u sell cases could u let me know
New cases and I do have a few used ones kicking around.
I do use gloves when working with solvents and extreme dirty conditions.
Slightly extend the 3-4 slider just before the half way point.
Nice video
Legend🤠💪🏽
Paul almost sounded pissed when he seen the condition that transmission was in.
+Drunken Ira Hayes
Yo Drunken, you got that right, looked like they filled it with burnt motor oil from a 400,000 mile diesel engine, yeah?
So I wasn't the only dumbass that didn't pull the driveshaft // I did get a car trailer after //
Careful with those 4-flute taps... not as strong as a 2 or 3 flute design.
I've never broken a tap and am well aware of the difference in tap design. Thanks for your concern
can you show how the shifter works?
Do you have a mail adress?
The about section on my profile has all my info. A link to a shifter video is here:

Not all shafts are created equal - Paul Cangialosi 😂 Thanks for the good videos though!
Should have said machined with the correct dimensions and level of detail.
Can you please rebuild my m22. Please. And I’ll even get your warden a Starbucks coffee card. Do a first responder a rake. 🤘🏼
Call me to discuss your issues aTE 561-743-5600
Will you rebuild my muncie
Not rebuilding at this time
@@GearBoxVideo when will you be rebuilding again ?
When parts sources get stabilized and I don't know when that will be. Not interested in taking in work I can't get out and would be cluttering up the shop for months.
@@GearBoxVideo ok I understand thank you God bless.
hey you
Enjoying my work?
canço massa
AWWW COME ON MAN!!!! Cant ya do it any cheeper!!!!???
I never lower prices for anyone. I get that question every week. I think the worst thing you can do to someone is offer to sell at your first price and then lower it. First it implies that your work is overvalued and second tells the customer you will willing to rip them off for the extra 25 dollars!
@@GearBoxVideo That was what a customer asked me a while back. When we did carry outs.I quit selling them for obvious reasons. Would rather see them go else where. Not worth the trouble.
Exactly
Great video.
Struggled with your music choice. Too heavy.......
