Big thanks for the video! It occurs to me that its actually the mindset that matters the most. Havent really thought about it before, but thats actually something I applied a lot in the army, when we had to decide what to take and what to not take on our 1-2 week long range patrols on foot without vechiles. And after EVERY single mission or training or whatever, I noticed that I was carrying about 30-40% of useless luggage. So its well said for minimalism that its not the lack of something but the perfect amount of stuff.
As an essentialist minimalist with borderline asceticism it’s great fun gamifying this for riding. What’s the absolute least I can bring and still have everything I NEED. I try to find multi-use items, Swiss Army Knife things, be it tools, clothes, accessories that can serve several functions. I’m always fine with whatever I leave behind and never have to pick up. Just catching your videos after getting my 501. You ethos is spot on. Hope you haven’t minimalised you videos.
I tend to pack based on my hiking experience. I can pack all I need for 3 days in the wilderness. That's sleeping gear, clothing, food, water, rain gear etc. This total is between 20 & 25 lbs. Outside of tools for the bike I don't take anything more. My last trip of 8k all gear and tools weighed in at 27lbs. I take less food if stores, restaurants are available, then I eat out and carry less.

Nice video. I think it's a sailing saying, but the mantra of "Go small, go simple, go now" is how I see motorcycling. I've run into so many people on my travels who are gonna take that trip when they retire, or they have enough money, or whatever -- they often never take that trip. Or, I run into the fully loaded GS - all the camping and cooking gear - and I usually find them at hotels. I'll ask them how long they've been out, and how many times they camped. One time I remember a couple guys who'd been out a month and had camped twice - I was carrying a backpack and some tools on my trip and had a great time just staying in whatever hotels or B&Bs I found along the way - I was glad I had left the camping gear at home ;)
It’s been hard for me to embrace not camping as it feel cheaper - but often times the difference between a $20 campsite vs a $70 hotel - is 2 more hours of ridding and exploring a day plus more energy - and with such few days off - those extra hours and energy can add up to an extra days worth of riding. Worth it.
@@314adv "70 dollar hotel".............wow. That is a 1970's price. 200.00 can be easily spent when you roll into a town and almost everything is full. It happens. I know some hate to camp, but for me the camping is where you meet people, you see sunsets, you read a book, there is no Adventure to be had in any hotel anywhere. Free campsites can be found pretty easily if one looks around. It all takes some planning and minimizing on weight of gear.
Thanks for the traveling/packing wisdom. I have in the past always taken too much stuff. I’m learning that what you take for 2-3 days should be the same as what you would take for a long trip. I have gone from packing a WR250R to a T7. I’m looking forward to seeing how minimalist I can get. Great video ✊️👊✊️👊
Great insight! I like to pack as if I’m backpacking and need to carry just enough food for the distance between the point I’m at and where I’m going. I’m in my riding gear most of the time so I only need clothes for my non riding days. There are people where we’re riding and they need things too, so you’ll be fine with the absolute minimum.
I come from a thru-hiking background and we have a saying, "No matter what size pack you buy, you'll fill it." No one buys a big pack and doesn't fill it. So when it comes to minimalism for me, I start with the size of my pack. If it's small, I can't take too much. It's like forced minimalism or the removal of the temptation to take too much. As Paul said, after some time you realize just how little you really need to live while on the road. Save yourself the hassle of shipping stuff home and start with less.
Hey Paul thank you for sharing your experience! Can you tell me please what your luggage weighs when you travel for more than three months. I try to calculate it by having some experience of other rtw riders to adjust my rear suspension spring. Thank you very much‘!
@@rtwpaulif light weight is goal and you travel with less than 40lbs; why not ditch the TNM rack? And Mount reckless 40 to rear fender? Thoughts on MM 40 bag vs GL coyote bag?
@@mfranquemont1884 I like the rack for added structure and strength, my packing is constantly evolving and is now even lighter. GL is a luggage system I hate, I used it for a RTW, the design idea is good, but flawed. It’s difficult to pack effectively, if you ever need anything you have to unpack virtually the whole thing, the strap system becomes less and less secure overtime especially if it gets wet. Not as durable as the mosko and very expensive for what you get. I’d never used it again.
@@mfranquemont1884 I do the rackless Tusk bags, not high dollar at all. The bags themselves are kinda heavy though. The idea for me is to keep what ever weight down as low as it can be. Even 20 lbs out on the rear rack? The 690 doesnt slide as well, it throws the balance off. Racks are for sure more weight, and they can bend and break. So far a rackless set up works for me. I put thick 3M clear vinyl on the parts of the bodywork I dont want wrecked.
