  • Two great parrots, one great size (relatively speaking) and a lot in common!
    They talk!
    They squawk!
They eat nuts! - Well, sort of.
They are the same size - Well, kind of!
These are two parrots from two different continents that have several similarities. While a Cape Parrot is a bit bigger, they are both a great, easy size. I'd call them 'medium' sized parrots easy to hold. They are large enough to have a stronger -or more obvious personality than a small parrot, but they are big enough to be like a larger parrot without the need for more space or more beak!
    TALK
Both these species can become fair talkers. A Hahn's Macaw will sound more like a bird than a Cape Parrot, but both will delight you with their words.
    MESS
Mess? From either of these guys? Not that I notice - but I've got two Mac'Girls and they make a HUGE mess, multiple times a day. So, whatever mess my Cape and Hahn's make go unnoticed here.
You'd notice if they were your only parrot - hopefully you'll get two so that they can keep each other company when you're tied up doing something else - but they aren't bad on the parrot scale. They aren't like some other parrots, such as African Greys or Caiques, that make two, three or four times the poop and mess...
    FOOD
Both these parrots require a daily dose of vegetables, parrot pellets and some nut fat. The Cape parrot should be fed approximately 1/4 cup of nuts or Macaw Mix daily; the Hahn's is a smaller parrot, so he/she only gets 1 spoonful a day (as per my experts). That means that you could give the treats out yourself!
    HYPER
When it comes to being hyper, Cape Parrots are not. They are pretty chill and pretty easy going. Not much ruffles their feathers.
My Hahn's Macaw, on the other hand... I do only have 1, so my experience with her is that she's hyper. She's got a big Macaw personality in her little body, which means she's louder - more squawky than the Capes- and more demanding of time and attention. She'll put her beak in your business, (mine literally says, "Whacha doin'?" and check your meal for any food that's not really fit for you, but would be ok for her. Funny and cute, the first several times. Then you want to eat... your food. In peace! It's all good, but only if she says so.
    All in all?
I feel like Cape Parrots are easier to live with. Maybe they can be compared to an older toddler in the metaphors of parrots being like perpetual toddlers that are intelligent, but never grow up and never stop wanting your time, love and attention.
Hahn's, on the other hand, are 'younger,' less able to relax. More energetic and vivacious.
I don't think either is better or worse, but I don't feel like I can give my Hahn's enough of anything: time, praise, love... Whereas my Capes are chill. They are easier on my ears and more independent.
So this may come down to how much time and energy you have. A Hahn's would engage with you more and, in that way bond more. A Cape will bond and be cool, but they are happy just being around me -- they don't have to be squawking at met at the same time!

      Oh, thanks for saying so!
Consider traveling to get your parrot too- otherwise, I don't think you can go wrong as long as you spend lots of time with your parent and you don't mind some noise! Yes, Emerald is a gem, but a squawky one! Lol

I have a 3 year old Female Cape. A wonderful parrot to own. She”s relatively quite and has a great vocabulary. She has even picked up some phrases from the tv. Very smart. The topic of how many nuts to feed is so controversial. It drives me mental. Considering birds come from different places, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that their diet may be different. Thank you for sharing what you feel their nut requirement should be. I appreciate you and your wisdom.

I'm right there with you -- I HATE feeling confused and frustrated when I read contradictory info online...
I rely on my mentor, Tony Silva. He is known the world over for his parrot knowledge. Plus, he's been working with parrots for over 45 years. He was the director of Parque Lorro in Spain, and they are said to have the largest collection of parrots. My point: he knows what he's doing. He doesn't do things unless he''s got scientific research or studies to back up decisions. That makes me feel good about the information on what to feed. It's not 'what he feels like' or his guesses, it's based on a lot of experience and knowledge.
:) Hope that helps -- I would never do things for my birds without being convinced that there are good reasons for the choices being made for them.

It would be a real toss up for me. They both have endearing qualities. Do you find the Cape is less needy?❤️

Yes. Hate to say it, but yes. Of course, Emerald isn't a large enough representation of Hahn's Macaws, but my sense is that they do need more attention.

Hi I’m thinking on getting a Hahn’s macaw what’s the pro and cons and how loud are they cause I live in an apartment with my mother and sister and we want a parrot as a family pet so should I get a Hahn’s macaw I feel like they are me as a parrot that why I love them and attached to them although I know they are challenging. Also atm I’m always home if I left it would be 3 hours or 2 but in sep school will be only 2 days physical school then all week online and our school is like 6 hours so what’s your thoughts (also in the future from now to 3 years which I will be a senior I will be on school from Sunday to Thursday 6 hours a day is a Hahn’s macaw for me? Please replay I can give it attention as soon as I get home but idk if it gonna work out

That is a link to a video of my parent-led aviary. You can also do a search on parrot bliss parrotlet aviary and you will see a video of me also in the aviary. My parent lets disprove time and again the myth that you can only have one parrotlet at a time. I've done videos on having one and adding a second, but I'll do a video on having more than one again in the next couple of days for you, keep watching. Thank you for posting.
