Honest Review: Ontario Knife Co Rat 3, Cabela's/ Bass Pro Exclusive

- Now if you know my channel, you know I don't do reviews often at all. This is one of those I bought with my own money and I just wanted to share my experience to help out the next person since when I bought it, I had to do a leap of faith because there really wasn't many reviews out there. Don't worry, no one is paying me to say what I said in this video and I did in fact use my own money to purchase this.

Sad when you think about that you have to label your review as "honest". Too many con men out there.
That looks like a nice little fixed blade. Now being T75 that is really interesting as T75 is a hot work steel that resists softening at higher tempts. Combined with the chromium content of 3.5% it should get a good edge and hold it well. Plus shouldn't corrode super quick either but not nearly enough for a good stainless balance starting at 18%. T75 is more a specialty product in the industry so neat they are using it.
One thing, T75 is lacking nickle content and when combined with chromium and molybdenum in the proper ratio and crystal structure in the steel it gives it great corrosion resistance properties but when it is in the Austenitic class it isn't heat treatable.
Often in knives they use a Martensitic stainless that contains very little nickle as it can be heat treated BUT they will still rust with many times of uses as the chromium layers are ripped off and exposed and the chromium content can be low like only 11% but will work with a simple kitchen knife.
For a good bush craft knife I generally say stick to carbon steels. Yep they are going to rust more but they hold lovely edges and are very dependable. The Austenitic stainless steels are a naturally hard metal but they don't hold the edge well and sharpening them is a total pain from what I have found. Then the Martensitic steels can be hardened but in an abusive environment you are still going to have corrosion.
I think you try making one with one out of the Ferritic Stainless Steel class as it can be work hardened but not heat treated. It is a good steel and what is often used in those stainless steel gun barrels (if I'm remembering that correctly) but not sure if people have done much knife making it with it.

No dont apologize, well done. There are alot of con men out there and many get these products for free so they talk them up like they are the best thing ever. I bought this with my own money and like it so i felt the need to share it with those in my community. I like the fact they know carbon steels develop surface rust so they coated it. So its lile 97% benefit with 3% downfall only because you still should oil it for storage

Literally my favorite part of this knife. Any bit of dulling and its 6 drags across a stone and bam, it perfect again. OKC makes good stuff at a fair price point for sure

I have this version of the RAT-3. It is well constructed with attention to detail. The carbon steel is durable and easy to sharpen when needed. The size is perfect for camp chores, but not intended for heavy duty wood processing. This knife has a sharp spine and will serve as a striker for a ferro rod or a piece of flint or other hard stones. This version comes with a leather sheath which is well constructed and securely holds the knife for belt carry. At this price point I would consider this to be a high value knife. - Tennessee Smoky

Nice version of this knife. BTW, Webbwood is apparently a laminated wood product - so while rosewood may be the base wood used here, the scales should prove more durable and water resistant than regular rosewood.
I have alot of blades and swords and such items, but what oil is best for all of them? Does it matter what steal the blades are or can I buy one oil for all of them?

nice blade, i have something like that, a bit larger, got from AFG. combat knife, is what supply called it when they issued them.. i thinks its in my truck, may have to pull it out and see what it is. good stuff brother.

I think fitness should absolutely be a priority from a food storage standpoint (less calories requirement, body working most efficiently) and from a preventative health standpoint. Since diabetes and cardiovascular disease are the biggest issues facing most Americans, being physically fit makes those a non issue. IMHO, by getting your body used to running as efficient as you can by throwing in intermittent fast and maintain a heathy weigh to stave off diseases, youll be leaps and bounds above your peers.

OKC is outta business. These were made specifically for Bass Pro/Cabela’s, so when they’re gone, they’re gone.
The Webbwood is just as durable as the Micarta and for the price it’s effectively an excellent value esee with a leather sheeth
I like just about any carbon steel knives, generally 5 or 6 in blade, cold steel is my favorite but do own an use k-bar, Ontario, etc, etc, Thx for the vid Bro.

I own this knife today and used to own an ESEE 3. Both I can not hold without using the finger choil; the handle is just too short. I need handles that stick out past the pinkie without needing to hug the blade. Better for hunting or those who need a compact day hike knife. I'd rather an ESEE 4 but I sold that too because I hated the flat handle which was the only option back then.

Was looking at an ESEE that I've been wanting today in SMKW and ran across the RAT3. Think I'm gonna pick one up instead of the ESEE.
Esee is a great knife. This one is a little more price conscious but still performs well. I use it for skinning game now

Would it be a good edc in a urban area? In your opinion.
As long as your particular state doesnt have laws against carrying knives with blades longer than 3", then i think it would make an excellent EDC

The Rat 3 is made out of 1095 not 1075. I have one and I would guess the Rockwell hardness of mine to be around 58 because it holds an edge better than my Essee 4 which is also made out of 1095 but with a lower Rockwell hardness to make the knife tougher.
The regular OKC rat 3 is made of 1095 but the cabelas/ bass pro exclusive version is made from 1075 as per the cabelas website.
And now I think all the RAT line is 1075 according to Ontario's site.

that is my favorite size knife. that's a good fixed blade. my EDC is Buck Omni Hunter (folder) it's almost the same size....very nice knife, my one complaint is that i (personally) don't like wood handles, they get slick when wet (water, blood, gunk etc) thanks for the review~
I know exactly what you mean. We all have our preferences and ideally i prefer micarta or a g10 but this handle hasnt given me any issues (probably because I almost exclusively use the finger relief). Thank you OSP

I’m not happy with mine. If the handle would be 1” longer I’d be satisfied with it. Their rat 1 foldable pocket knife for $30 I’m very pleased with. Thumbs up.

1075 is a lacking steel they would have been better off with 1095, which is why I did not go with cabal’s .
