  • The scourging or flogging of Jesus was intense. The Romans used a weapon that would inflict maximum pain. It is incorrectly called the Cat of Nine Tails. The official proper name is the Roman Flagrum. Let's test out what it can do, and imagine what it did.

The law only permitted 40 lashes in Deuteronomy. Plus, the instrument for scouring by the Jews was not meant to tear into flesh the same way the Romans intended. The Jewish instrument did not have metal or bone as part of it. The 39 lashes, as Paul described, was because the instrument employed by the Jews had three cords, and so if they used 40 lashes, that would exceed the 40 permitted by law. This beating that Paul experienced on five occasions was not anywhere near what Jesus experienced. In fact, the Jews at the time would lash the individual on both shoulders and the chest in order to distribute the pain. Death by scourging was illegal to tye Jews. The Romans did not follow a particular number of lashes but determined the extent of how much blood loss there was and other physical factors. In Jesus's case, he had to carry the cross beam to the place of the final execution. The Romans discovered how to push this to the limit in most cases, but the number of lashes given out was relative to the specific individual. The Persians and the Carthaginains both used crucifixion before the Romans ever made a science of it. Often, a Centurion was appointed to determine when enough was enough. The crucifixion in all of its terror and misery was the end goal in order to frighten criminals and potential insurrectionists. If you beat someone to death, then the whole idea behind Crucifixion would be lost.

The Shroud of Turin shows that Jesus was lashed at least 372 times. He was beaten to within a fraction of an inch of His life. I believe that if the lictors, (whip masters) kept on lashing Jesus another ten minutes, they would have had to crucify a dead man. Another five minutes might have killed Jesus.

No he wasn't. The flagrum just left multiple injuries with each stroke because it had multiple tails. After forty or fifty they'd have to stop or they'd not need to crucify anyone.

Thank you for the useful and informative video. The scourging was a preliminary to crucifixion, and its purpose was to weaken prisoner to the point that he would not resist the effort to put him on the cross. “Forty save one” was part of Jewish law, but a flogging done under Roman law had no such limit. The only limit was the prisoner had to be alive so that he could be crucified.
The typical Stations of the Cross, in which Jesus apparently is walking through the streets of Jerusalem on his way to Calvary, is seriously embellished. A person who has been scourged would not have the physical strength to do that. Here is my analysis of the 14 Stations commonly reenacted in churches on Good Friday:
    I. Jesus is Condemned to Death, stripped naked, and scourged.
II. He is then made to carry the crossbeam.
III. He cannot do so (the First Fall).
IV. He meets his mother, Mary, who insists that the Romans get someone to carry the crossbeam.
    V. The Romans press Simon into service.
VI. Jesus meets Veronica, who wipes his face with her veil.
VII. Jesus tries to get up but falls again (the Second Fall).
VIII. Jesus is met by the Women of Jerusalem, who sought to administer narcotics, but he refuses.
IX. Jesus tries to get up, but he cannot (the Third Fall).
    X. The Romans, exasperated, throw a robe over Jesus, and drag him the relatively short distance to Calvary, and strip him naked.
XI. Jesus is nailed to the Cross.
XII. Jesus dies on the Cross.
XIII. Jesus is taken down from the Cross.
XIV. Jesus is put into the tomb.
The “Fifteenth Station” is “Jesus rises on Easter Sunday. Hallelujah!

I believe Jesus was the Son of God because, despite the unimaginable tools they used to make him suffer, he never renounced his identity. He could have claimed he was not the Son of God and that his teachings were false to save himself from pain, but he didn't. Considering how the Roman Empire crucified people, it's clear that anyone would have given up under such circumstances. Yet, Jesus never once refused who he was; even when they repeatedly asked him to come clean to make it stop, he remained steadfast. This is why I believe Jesus is the Christ. Many of his disciples, who were killed and tortured years later, remained devoted to Jesus. They were given the opportunity to deny that Jesus was the Son of God, yet they chose to suffer greatly for their belief in him. No one would endure such pain if they did not truly believe; therefore, I am convinced that Jesus was the Son of God.

The whip shown is a flagellum. Jesus was whipped with a Flagrum. A whip made of 3 leather straps with metal dumbbells at the end. Jesus underwent a dreadful scourging. The Shroud of Turin is a perfect eyewitness account of the sufferings of our Lord.

    • @stultusvenator3233
      @stultusvenator3233 Рік тому

Sorry the Shroud is a forgery made in the 1300's.
The Turin Shroud is a fake.
That is the verdict of Catholic Bishop Pierre d’Arcis who has written to tell the Pope it was “a clever sleight of hand” by someone “falsely declaring this was the actual shroud in which Jesus was enfolded in the tomb to attract the multitude so that money might cunningly be wrung from them”.
Admittedly, since Bishop d’Arcis was writing in 1390, to Pope Clement VII

A LITTLE more information i d like to share in regard this punishment ; the romans administred this punishment in 3 categories from wich the severity of the crime was judged/concerned.....THE LEAST OFFENSE like stealing some bread from a fellow soldier could result in FUSTIGATIO the "easiest" form of flogging, where flexible rods was used.....the next FLAGELLATIO was used when a more serious crime took place, perhaps being caught in counciously neglecting one or more duties put onto you by the roman military system....i m not sure with wht whipping instruments they used when administering this "moderate" flogging.....BUT the most severe punishment tht often resulted in DEATH was the VERBERATIO, tht seems to be the punishment tht was administred to JESUS at least watching the movie PASSION OF CHRIST.....there they took use of this most HEINIOUS OF TOOLS CALLED THE FLAGRUM as seen presented here and displayed in all its cruelty....the VERBERATIO was given to those tht activily tried to oppose the empire, scheming plots to work against the empire, those seen as traitors....the JOEL donahoe whip is the most functional design PERIOD, I HAVE ONE MYSELF WITH 6 STRAPS and never used other than to cardboard,, and jesus does it leave marks!!!! IN THE MOVIE OF MEL GIBSON the straps get tangled up in a real bloody mess quite literally, so its very unclear wht the original design was, cos the whip back the nwasnt made of everlasting polycarbonate plastic to endure times, it was made of ox leather and other natural items like sheep bones and such, and they could never find a genuine replica of the flagrum due to it was moldering up long before they could get hand of one fully intact...BUT THE COLUMN where JESUS stood and being whipped exists today in ISRAEL and bear marks of the vicious flagrum and all other unfortunate victims THT TOOK THE BEATING of this bestial punishment
