In the United Kingdom March No. 1 is played during each Last Night of the Proms, the last evening of an annual series of promenade concerts, given since 1895 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and broadcast by the BBC from July to September . Singing the words of Land of Hope and Glory, the audience joins the orchestra. The step is always bisected. As there are giant screens for the public in several cities, thousands of people sing at the same time.
In the United States, March No. 1 is particularly known as the music used at graduations. It was first used for this purpose at the June 28, 1905 ceremony at Yale University, where music professor Samuel Sanford had invited his friend Elgar to attend and receive an honorary doctoral degree in music. Elgar agreed, and Sanford made sure that he was the star of the festivities, hiring the New Haven Symphony Orchestra for the occasion and various other musicians to play two parts of Elgar's oratorio The Light of Life and the march Pomp and Circumstance March No 1. Air has since become de rigeur during many ceremonies in addition to graduations.
Au Royaume-Uni la marche no 1 est jouée lors de chaque Last Night of the Proms, dernière soirée d'une série annuelle de concerts-promenades, donnée depuis 1895 au Royal Albert Hall à Londres, et diffusée par la BBC de juillet à septembre. Entonnant les paroles de Land of Hope and Glory, l'assistance se joint à l'orchestre. La marche est toujours bissée. Comme il y a des écrans géants pour le public dans plusieurs villes, ce sont des milliers de personnes qui chantent en même temps.
Aux États-Unis, la marche no 1 est tout particulièrement connue pour être la musique utilisée lors des remises de diplôme. Elle fut utilisée la première fois à cette fin lors de la cérémonie du 28 juin 1905 à l'Université Yale, où le professeur de musique Samuel Sanford avait invité son ami Elgar pour assister et recevoir un diplôme doctoral honorifique de musique.
