Love a good easy bread recipe. TIP: I dissolve the sugar in the water, that way its easier for the yeast to gobble up instead of it being dry taking a little longer to dissolve in the flour. Pontiac, Michigan I enjoy your videos. Another TIP. We have many Dollar Stores, I buy and use instead of plastic wrap, A shower cap without the holes to cover my dough to rise. You can reuse them and clean them to boot many times. Now days they also have the Silicon covers you can use.
I luv. Copper pots
That is amazing 😂❤
Thanks so much. I was struggling with the plastic wrap 🇨🇦👋
Hi Detroit Michigan here ;)
Did you proof the dry yeast first in water or did you follow the receipt as shown ? I remember last time my German dad baked the yeast did not grow. My American wife told him to proof the yeast first. In Germany we mainly used active yeast that comes in a block not dry and in grains.
Iovely can I have a slice? 🎉 lots of butter please 😊❤
I am from New Jersey, USA. I find the most difficult thing about baking bread , is waiting for it to cool in order to have a slice of warm, buttered bread.
Me too.🤭
I don't like crispy crust, so I butter the top after it is done.
LOL me too
I don't have that problem with waiting for the bread to cool . I eat it hot 🔥 with butter melting right off 😋😁

Hi, from Warren, MI USA Thank you for sharing your grandfather's recipe I love it. My grandparents were from Germany and I am always looking for authentic German recipes since my grandmother's recipes were lost when I was little. I have such fond memories of the foods she used to make for me on the weekends I always spent with her. My fondest memories were of the poppyseed strudel she would always have for me when I walked through the door after school on Friday along with a big pot of Chicken paprikash. She was very special to me and now that I am getting up in the years there isn't a day that she doesn't cross my mind or the foods she would make for me that I could go on and on about among other things. So a big thank you for the recipes. Wishing you well from Michigan, Donna
Beautiful history, I love it!! ❤🎉
Let me tell you something.
My mother was a fantastic cook. We 3 children ,born 1945, 1948, 1950, all 3 still alive, loved her cooking.
And she had lots of fantasie when it came to cooking something new from leftovers. I am so happy that she taught me to use up leftovers.
We had lots of plain tasty dishes, which I cook from time to time. Not only they are delicious, they bring back part of ny childhood. Thank you mum, MUTTI !
YOUR BREAD IS SUPER !!!

It proved overnight and went into the oven every morning for breakfast. 👏

My 90 yr old father in law is from Stuttgart and now lives in Utah. He bakes bread every week for as long as I can remember. His is very different. He also ads caraway seeds to it. Yours does look like my kind of bread.

Hi, thanks for taking the time and effort, recipes that have been handed down from our Mothers or Grandmothers are best. When I bake my bread I use just cold filtered water, the salt is mixed in with the water and added last to the flour and yeast. The yeast will feed off the flour and start to do it’s magic, I never add sugar. I knead the dough like you do, then rest the dough, then do the same as you did. Once it has had the last proving I put the dough into a ceramic oven proof round shaped pot, lid on. Place the pot into the oven and turn on to 250°C. Bake for 40 minutes. the bread has puffed up and developed a nice crust, but is still pale in colour. Bake for another 10-15 minutes or until the bread has a burnt caramel colour. Remove the pot from the oven, tip the bread onto a wire rack , allow to cool. 😃
How do you get bread to rise using cold water?
I'm amazed too. Once I made a yeast dough but it never rose, so I called my grandmother. She said, if you aren't sure your yeast is fresh, add a teaspoon of sugar or honey in your yeast and water for feeding the yeast. If it goes flat buy fresh yeast and start over to save on wasted flour. I got in the habit whenever I was in doubt.
@@debbabbit9283 Buy dry yeast in sachets. Approx. 7 grams each. Usually about 6-8 in a box.
Chris T ... Yeast feeds of sugar and the water must be warm.

I am trying this bread this weekend, my grandma made bread that looked like that. My great grandparents were from Traunstein area, they never spoke about it according to my grandma. They settled in Texas. That was 1934, family is still here. According to my grandma ( who never went to Germany ) Traunstein was not really a town when they left, just a small farming village, I have no idea. Being Jewish, going to Germany never seemed to be a goal of anyone in my family, but I want to go and see it. Thanks for recipe

Very nice recipe!! I loved it, I was born in México, but my great grand father was german, he came to live in Mexico in 1890 in the gold fever! And started his family here at the north part of the country. He died young, but the legacy he left very nice 😊

I used the 400ml you listed and my dough was a sticky mess but on looking at your video much more closely I noticed that you have only 300ml of water in your measuring jug! I managed to resurrect the dough by adding more flour and will reserve judgement when it has cooled and cut. I live in Northern England by the way😎
Good spot
Good eye, there. In fact, it mayb 350mls?

This is a beautiful crispy loaf of bread. I got to give it a try. Your grandpa is a special person to share such a simple recipe to you. Bless him!
My dear mother would have loved this - if only I could have made it for her (or could still do so). One of her favourite things was crisp bread rolls, which she bought on Saturdays and made cold meat and salad rolls for lunch (I made them with/for her in her last 4 years). I love crispy bread too. Will make this soon! I’m in Australia, by the way. 🍂🍃🌈
I love crispy bread, too and so did my mother. Especially with garlic butter.
I understand how much you miss sharing these simple joys with your mother. I do, too. My mother died a year ago.
I lost my mom 3 years ago too. I understand. 💔😪🙏
I also lost my beloved Mother in 2000. So sad that we’d all love to call, or share simple things with our Mothers. I have news I’d like to share and almost forget she’s not present. Happy baking and know she is with us.
My beloved mom passed in 2019 , I'm sure she would have enjoyed this wonderful bread . Brotherly greetings from CDMX México

Cooking from the US. I use a Dutch oven at 450 the bottom is always overdone. I incorporated your sugar, and your technique of olive oil as shown with my other recipe along with kneading the bread longer. That really made a difference. Thank you. Finally tried things your way. I just needed to bake it longer uncovered. Thank you so much!
I'm in the US too! Those are good tips to remember, my oven runs extremely high and fast so I have to really be careful it doesn't burn on the bottom as well.
Do you mind sharing what type of yeast to use? Is it active dry yeast or rapid rise instant yeast? I never know which one to use!
I put baking sheet on the rack below. Keeps the bottom crust from getting too well done!
Hi from Phuket Thailand!
I am looking forward to baking it .

Thank you, from Canada. This is the first recipe that worked the way I had hoped in my dutch oven. Baked it at a little higher heat for a little less time and then uncovered and baked another 10- 15 minutes. Turned out beautiful, I can't wait to try it. Update: my children and husband love it, this is now our go to bread recipe, thank you.
I was wondering if it would work in my dutch oven. Would you mind sharing the exact temperature and times? Also, did you use all purpose flour? I’m not sure if that’s what they mean by “wheat flour”. 😂 Thank you!
@@donnaandre7633 I take 1/2 the flour for the recipe and use ground whole wheat and spelt, the rest I use all purpose white flour.I use instant yeast instead of traditional,
3 1/2 - 4 c. flour depending on the day
2 1/2 tsp. instant yeast
1 tablespoon of sugar.
2 teaspoons of salt.
400 ml warm water.
I preheat my dutch oven anywhere from 450-500 before putting the bread in. Depending how hot it is, it takes about 20 for the initial bake before removing the lid, then bake til golden and thumps hollow on the bottom or internal temp of 205.

Greetings from Cottonwood, California, USA. Looking forward to trying the recipe. When I bake bread in my cast iron Dutch oven I toss an ice cube in the pot before the lid goes on. Yields a great rise and awesome crust.
You put the ice cube in just before the dough?
No, I place the dough in the Dutch oven first and then drop in the ice cube before I place the lid on.@@lizajoymorales248
@@user-kz2hu4wi2xdisculpa , colocas el cubo de hielo sobre la masa ? Puedes explicarlo mas detallado . Gracias!
I have the same question. Do you drop the ice cube on top of the dough?
You can just add a separate pot of water in the oven when the bread is baking. She bakes it in the pot. If you have a Dutch oven you can put the bread on the lid (put the lid upside down on the oven rack and parchment paper on top, then put bread on top of that) and then cover it with the Dutch oven upside down. The ice cube adds moisture but another pot of water in the oven will do the same.
Oh wow, I can only imagine what that would be like with some fresh homemade butter and honey! Oh, and greetings from the US! 🙂
