Swallowing goldfish alive was a FAD in America at one time, I think it was around 1939 or so. A college fad probably, where daring someone to do something foolish or dangerous wasn't unknown! Still isn't! Every year it seems, somewhere some student dies due to a college hazing for a fraternity, by a bunch of Delta Sierras! (Meaning dumb s*its!)

This is Black Tai (Tai Dam), not to be confused with Thai (Siamese) in Thailand though our languages are closely related as parts of Southwestern Tai languages of Kra-Dai (Tai-Kadai) family, also including Lao, Shan, Dai Lü, etc. The autonyms "Thai, Tai, Dai" are from the same root. According to various Thai/Lao folk legends, in correspondance to linguistic evidences, Southwestern Tai peoples have their homeland in northern Vietnam, especially Dien Bien province (Muong Then), after splitting from Northern Tai peoples (Zhuang in Guangxi for example), then spread southwestward over Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Yunnan of China, Shan state of Myanmar) and eastern India (Assam)

Those fresh water fishes will give you bile duct cancer if they're not properly cooked. This is because some have parasitic worms in them. A lot of Asian people have it because they eat raw fresh water fishes and even the fermented fish is raw. Being Asian and growing up extremely poor, I used to eat foods like this but not anymore. The bamboo sticky rice is one of my favorites. Very hard to open but, once you figure it out, it's very easy. Just use a knife and crack it from the bottom and it'll split in half completely. The fermented fish is also very good as I liked the sourness of it. I cook mine though. I like them as fish jerkies. The raw live fish eating, I've seen it once. A guy just bit the head off and just started chewing away as if it as nothing.

I almost fell over from laughing when Sonny said "the fat one". Not sure if Thai ppl think exactly the same as Kinh VNese but this reminded me of some memories while I was studying in the Phillipines. We had a Canadian guy and 1 South African guy there. And they did not know at first that since all the Vietnamese guys were so skinny and "being fat" was all they were longing for. So as a result they all run towards these 2 white guys, touched their tummies and said happily "oh you are so fat you are so fat." They had no idea they tortured the 2 poor guys for a month until they found out the truth. They cudnt understand why these very friendly ppl cud be so rude.
In case some of you dont know.. Thai ethnic in Vietnam are Vietnamese citizens.. but they share the same roots with the Thai ppl in Thailand.. with same language and traditional costumes... They identify themselves as Black Thai and White Thai and are among 54 ethnics living together within Vietnam's border. They are the closest genetically to the Kinh Vietnamese (may be 1 of the Bai Yue descendants)

Hahaha omg in vietnam, we regard people who we perceive as “fat” to be very well privileged and in essence “wealthy” since in most of our history and how recently war torn we are, most lived in poverty with almost nothing to eat and only those who had enough or more than enough to eat were wealthy enough to afford it.

If you do not do the process of fermenting the Fish, it will be deadly to consume it. It takes great skill to make it right.

I think it's convergence as a result of the methods of survival. Like, if you cook with a stove, the recipes you make will converge on certain styles of cooking. So there's things we find a lot in the kitchens of people in cities, that we would almost never find in the kitchens of people out in the wild. Similarly, there's lots of similarities between the kitchens (or just firepits, if they do all the cooking outside) of people who just use plain old fire to cook, because they're bound to use similar tools most of the time. They're mostly limited to what you find outside, and what you find outside is generally pretty similar.

Due to war this ancient culture migrated from Southern China, settling throughout Southeast Asia over the last few millennia, and has formed dozens of branches of the Tai culture which can be found in (Vietnam, Thailand, China, India, Burma, Laos etc. The lovely people in this video I would guess are of the Hàng Tổng (Tày Mường) classification of Tai people. Now my keyboard and screen had to be wiped down before I could continue. Please if you are going to go for any creepy crawlies or similar exotic culinary excursions, take Andrew with you. On a side note, maybe its a good thing that they dont eat the bugs and reptiles in Australia when you consider that it is only the most dangerous continent to live on. However apparently once you throw a Tarantula in boiling water the venom seems to lose its bite. Just not sure if that works with all venoms out there. 18:34 I spot a fish, which we called "Betok" here in Indonesia. I'm surprised they eat that fish raw, that fish have many spikes on it's dorsal fin and it's gills. I heard a story a boy died because he choked on that fish because he tried to kill that fish by biting it (ik it's stupid, but still)

Eating the bones is a really bad idea even if you don't choke. If a bone gets caught in your intestines it will cause polyps and you will die without surgery.
