My oldest child died in November at age 28. This song is very helpful to me as I mourn. As it played, I felt moved to make a circle with my arms around her ashes. thank you
The Cranberries - Dreams. Brought me here. Learned that the sort of sounds Dolores O'Riordan was making in the song, Dreams, was in reference to keening. What a beautiful way to mourn ones loss. Just let it all out.
Me and my mom were going to work, witchy drum shop and we listened to this it brought so many emotions and tears, I felt a weight lifted off of me. The knowledge that this song helped me to move on with the recent deaths (past 2 years a lot of pets died. Not all mine but they were family pets dear to me) made me feel at peace. But on a side note your voice is so beautiful and I could listen to it all day. It's really ironic for a song of morning to be what makes me confirm that yes i am still extremely gay is funny to say the least.
Aine Minogue ~ This is lovely and soulful and sad. Western culture seems to run and hide from sadness, perhaps because it is not easy. [With all due respect, and there is much, in the details under your publishing date, Keening appears to be mispelled "Kenning".] Thank you again for this beautiful song.
I wonder if the tradition of keening is the reason why a banshee wails when a death is about to occur. I wonder if originally, instead of the blood curdling scream associated with banshees today, they actually keened out their death message.
That is correct! I wrote a research paper on the Bean Sidhe/Banshee for a folklore class and yes, she does indeed keen, not wail/scream, according to the old stories I found in some old folklore journals (some going back to the 1800s!) as well as a modern scholar's work. The screaming is a newer thing that I'm guessing comes from interpretations that aren't familiar with keening. Honestly I think keening is far more eerie than wailing/shrieking anyway, lol.
@@kayleengill9059 oh wow, I made a good guess there lol Yeah, I find keening to be far more bone chilling than screeching. I can imagine the terror of hearing your own funeral dirge as a forewarning of your own death. Can your research paper be read anywhere online? It sounds interesting.
If you don't know what you want to say in your keening you can just wail out your grievances. Not all keening needs words but yes...she's speaking gealic

I’m here bawling my eyes out, with Àine telling my it’s real and it’s okay and allowing me to mourn as no one else will. Thank you.

I have no words to describe the power and beauty of this music.
Man this got me in "the feels" almost as much as the song at the end of gladiator.
Beautiful and sent me into primal trance of old traditions. Thank you Áine

There's also a story that the Irish Goddess Brighid created keening when her son died in battle.
There was also the Faerie Washerwoman, the Washer at the Ford, who could be seen washing bloody clothes before battle.

Does keening have a language? Are there actual words?
