First look at the ERCO Ercoupe 415C in Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • Today we take the ERCO Ercoupe 415C for a flight from D83 Boonville in Microsoft Flight Simulator - a "test flight" of sorts. The 415C is famous for being "un-spinnable", and I can believe that after flying it for a short time.

    Jonathan, I owned an Ercoupe and the absence of rudders will not let you perform a sideslip. If you're too high on approach, you pull up the nose and the airplane will slow down as well as increase its vertical speed. The beauty of this aircraft is that it will not spin, which means that you can bring it to an almost stall without the risk of spinning it.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      That's an interesting technique. As far as I understand, some models had rudders - some didn't.

    • @tonycervone6494
      @tonycervone6494 Рік тому +1

      @@jonbeckett The rudders became a "mod" for those pilots who simply could not envision flying a rudderless aircraft. As to my experience with the plane, when on a very high approach, my pulling up the nose would make the plane come down more like a butterfly due to its inability to have rudders turn away from the ailerons, thus no fear of stalling at low altitude. In my opinion, it's the best plane for weekend flyers, given its "convertible" and side by side seating. At 80 mph, I would lower the windows and "drive" it like my convertible car in and out of puffy clouds . In strong crosswinds, the challenge is to keep it on the runway until you have sufficient airspeed to achieve safe lift and enough clearance between your wings and runway to turn into the wind. Failure to do this would push the aircraft off the runway, and on narrow airstrips, it could be tricky.

      The rudders were also added so it could be used as a primary trainer

    I love this aeroplane. I flew the Ercoupe a whole lot in X-Plane 11. I live a few miles from College Park Aerodrome where the Ercoupe was first flown, so it has a place in my heart for more than just the reason that it's a whole lot of fun to fly.

    Thank you for another great video! Just FYI, the developer updated the plane on May 26, 2023 and the rudder pedals functionality was removed. This is from the most recent documentation:
    Rudder Pedals: Originally, this add-on had rudder pedals, but in update 1.3.0, the rudder pedals were
    removed, and now the steering has to be controlled by the yoke input, just like in real
    aircraft. Both ailerons and rudders are now controlled by the yoke input

    Flaps as we know them today have been around since the 20's. The ercoupe was designed with simplicity in mind so no flaps.

    I checked the marketplace in the sim for this plane, and couldn't find it. I'll go on Sim Marketplace, now, and have a look over there for it. I thought this plane wasn't supposed to have rudder pedals, but only a brake pedal. Was kind of hoping to fly the ErCopue, aka "Scare"-Coupe with it's original flight characteristics intact. I did see an older vid of this plane, which was covering an update. Turns out, the dev disabled the canopy to fix an animation glitch. Very bad form. LOL Thanks for the video.

      @@jonbeckett Nope. Only place I did find it was in SimMarket in Europe for around 18 U.S. I think he just cut/pasted a generic trike plane's profile into a poor quality 3D model, and called it "done". LOL Had none of the characteristics I was expecting from the ErCoupe. Many bugs are still in it, and now, you can't even open the canopy anymore. LOL Maybe it's a placeholder for future work.

    I flew one in the 70's with the owner, it was IFR certified. We flew into JFK in IMC. On the initial call to Approach control, he thought we were F-ing with him. Made a very extreme crosswind landing (which they are known to do really well). The tower guys had a good laugh I guess...first Ercoupe they had directed in. Take a look at the landing gear..it was a design that Boeing used for its 707 later. Yes, his still flies. GREAT model...great video.

      @hatman4818 Рік тому

      People laugh at me anytime I ask about getting mine IFR certified, and what all it would entail.
      I honestly wouldnt willingly fly into IMC if I didnt have to. I mostly just want it for "need it" situations, and to train for instrument rating. It's cool to hear it can actually be pushed through some IMC if need be. People call it too light for that, but I honestly think it's a tough little plane thats well streamlined no matter what direction the airflow is coming from.
      I also think the metalized wings might help keep the plane together in bad weather. Was his IFR certified plane a rag wing, or metalized?

    • @615thAeroSquadron
      @615thAeroSquadron Рік тому

    My uncle owned one of these and it was first plane my father (the baby) ever took flight in - and he was forever dreadful of any type of flying afterwards, not even in a 747. Two requests: please show more exterior views of aircraft when flying; And when referring to the ground, please say "ground." Floor = inside a building or structure, whereas ground = outside. Example: OUTSIDE: My beagle dropped the stick onto the ground. INSIDE: My sister was pouring a cup of coffee in the kitchen and spilled some on mom's freshly mopped floor.

    Good vid.
    Flaps were first used in 1916/1917. Ercoupe lacked them because it was designed to be stupid simple to fly. Most of the production models were built after WW2.
    I've tried REALLY hard to like this addon, but the performance of the plane is right out of fantasy land unfortunately. It's so far off of the 415-C POH and every single pilot report I've read about how this plane flies. Really quite disappointing.
    BRSims finally added rudder/aileron mixing and got rid of the pedals like the real Ercoupe in the latest update, but I really preferred doing the control mixing manually, as the rudder is FAR too aggressive in the official update. Just tapping the yoke causes the nose to swing all over the place.
    It's unfortunate. The external model is generally well done outside of some proportion issues but nothing egregious. Ah well.

    The glide and landing roll-out on this aircraft are seriously messed up - it glides almost horizontally and on touchdown it rolls almost forever without losing any speed. I've found that I get much more believable results with the following changes to the flight_model.cfg file:
    cruise_lift_scalar =1
    parasite_drag_scalar =0.8

    One of my favorite real-life airplanes. I flew into a grass strip about 45 years ago, and an Ercoupe that looked just like this landed behind me. A gorgeous brunette slid back the canopy and stood up with a leather flying jacket and a scarf blowing in the wind. One of my most vivid lifetime memories. I've wanted one (the Ercoupe...well, both) ever since!
    Some of these had no rudder pedals and they had the rudders linked in with the wheel. Made crabbing impossible. Found a video of a rudderless one... ua-cam.com/video/1gUc54yoph4/v-deo.html

      That's interesting that there was a rudderless version - and what a memory :)

    • @TheBullethead
      @TheBullethead Рік тому

      @@jonbeckett Actually, the lack of rudder pedals was this plane's most famous feature and I believer ALL of them (or at least the vast majority) were built that way. The plane was built by several different entities over the years (Ercoupe becoming Aircoupe in the process) and it might be that one of the later builders offered pedals from the factory. I'm not sure on that. But in general, Ercoupes and Aircoupes with rudder pedals today are aftermarket mods.
      Because of this, there used to be an Ercoupe-only pilot's license, as in Ercoupes were the only planes you could fly. Not only for the physical lack of rudder pedals, but because in those days being able to do and recover from a 3-turn spin was a requirement for a regular PPL, and the Ercoupe couldn't spin, nor really do conventional spin recovery if it somehow got spinning anyway. Plus, taxiing was steered with the yoke, which takes some getting used to if you were raised on rudder pedals. Which is why today most of these planes now have pedals.
      In MSFS, there's an option to couple rudder and aileron in the assistance menu. I suggest using that option and flying the plane without using its rudder pedals, and see what happens.
