    Tim loves playing cards and he also loves optical illusions. So how about combining the two - a set of playing cards that have optical illusions on them!
    The first example has a different optical illusion in each card. They can also be used as regular playing cards, assuming you are not too distracted by the illusions!
    Tim goes to a lot of trade fairs, and sometimes a stand will hand out single cards.
    Tiny playing cards. I suppose these would suit children. Certainly as an adult they are quite tricky to handle, due to their small size.
    Then Tim shows a deck of cards that is mostly normal, but the court cards (Jack, Queen and King) feature some rather famous cartoon characters!
    A very unusual deck of cards, which feature famous composers and each card has a short, well known phrase of music by that composer. These cards do not have the normal four suits, so clearly you would play a different kind of game with these.
    Finally, a mystery deck - at least to Tim. Called SKAT, this deck comes from Germany. The two, three, four five and six of each suit are missing. Obviously the game of SKAT does not need these.
    For those who are curious, here is a link which gives a lot more information about this game, which is very popular in Germany - www.detailedpedia.com/wiki-Sk...)

    The deck of Skat cards (32 cards) is so common in Germany that for a long time as a kid, I didn't even know there was a full deck with 52 cards. I still remember how weird it felt to see cards with 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 on them for the first time.
    I'd say that even today, the Skat deck is the standard deck in Germany, and chances are high that if you randomly find a deck of card in someone's cupboard, it will have 32 cards, not 52.

    • @EvilDoresh
      @EvilDoresh 2 місяці тому

      It's just a lot more compact than our _other_ standard the Rummy deck (which is _two_ decks of 52 cards with an extra Joker for each)

      Same for me in Russia. I've played with 32 card decks for the first 10-15 years of my life without even knowing there were 52 cards. I also always thought that ace goes after the king, rather than being in place of one.

    The spinning circles illusion works particularly well on camera because it's based on motion blur, and when you film with a relatively slow shutter it you get the camera's own motion blur recorded in the video. So, you can even pause the video and it'll look like they were spinning (part of the circles will be blurred - which wouldn't happen live).

    • @antonliakhovitch8306
      @antonliakhovitch8306 3 місяці тому

      Cool! So this is a true optical illusion then, rather than a mental illusion

    • @RFC3514
      @RFC3514 3 місяці тому

      @@antonliakhovitch8306 - Well, the process that starts the illusion is "optical" (not exactly optical, more related to _temporal_ reaction to light) in both cases, but assuming that something is _moving_ because it's blurred is always a mental process (it's a matter of interpretation).
      Our brain does most of our "seeing" anyway; the information coming from our eyes in real time is very limited.

    Skat is actually very popular in Germany (and bordering countries). The ace is in that game the highest value, although in the traditional German pack, there is no ace but a deuce (meaning 2) as the highest value. You can look up the rules on Wikipedia although there are many “house rules” making the game easier to understand. In fact, I probably never understood the “official rules” 😂

    I don't know about Skat, but my grandparents were from Germany and used to play Sheeps Head, which used a similarly modified deck. The original German game it came from is apparently called Schafkopf. The version we played was interesting because whoever had the black queens were partners, but that wasn't revealed initially. So you would only learn if someone was your partner if they played a black Queen. This causes a shift mid-hand where people go from playing for themselves to teams.

    We used to play a card game called Truco back in my school here in Brazil. It's played with Spanish decks, which goes from 1 to 10 (8 to 10 being Lady, Horse and King), usually excluding a few cards, so I tought that Skat deck was made for that. Turns out they're different games entirely, Skat is from Germany and Truco is from Spain.

    I love playing Skat, but it's just only 32 cards, it's a little weird very fun game but the rules are tricky to learn, and if you got into, it is one of the best card games ever, and it trains your calculation abilities and also your memory skills. Here in germany this game is so famous we have an own court for this game here, true fact. It's in Altenburg ,Thuringia. Due to the a little weird rules the judges need to explain if a card move was ok or against the rules of this game.

    Mister Tim, I don't know about German card game SKAT, but there's Russian card game called DURAK ( emphasis on "A"; the word means "fool" in English). In this game we also use deck with 36 cards (without 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and jokers), in start of game you shuffle the deck and give 6 cards to every player (usually there's from 2 to 6 players), then you take the uppest card from remaining deck, turn it face up and put under remaining deck, suit of this card is trump for all deck now. Hierarcy of cards is like this: ace > king > queen > jack > 10 > 9 > 8 > 7 > 6, but cards with trump suit can beat any other card, exept higher trump card (like trump 6 of spades can beat king of hearts, but it can be beaten by 7 of trump spades, so unbeatable card is trump ace). The point of game is stay whithout cards on hand in the end when the deck is bat, a player who staed with cards is DURAK. Firs player in his turn lay's on table his preferable cards (you can lay any number of cards as long as they have same value. like two 6s, or three kings etc.), the opponent now must beat theese cards with his cards, if he bats them all this cards go to the bat, and both players draws cards from deck to their hands up to 6, if opponetn ca't beat cards on table he takes them, and only first player draw cards from deck to his hand up to 6. If opponent doesn't beat cards in first turn, then in second turn he's not make his move, he can make his move on another turn only if he beated cards of first player in previous turn. If there's more than 2 players in game, they can add their cards to "attacking" cards of other player if they have cards with same value as the "attacking" cards (this act isn't obligatorius, they can do it or not by their will). 😀

    Skat is the National game of Germany and dates back to like 1810. It involves bidding with cards on your hand just enough to win the round but not too high or your lose. I’m not a fully versed in the general rules, especially since their appears to be many variations played throughout Germany, though In Tournament play they have a standard set of rules but informal games may have different rules.
    Skat is also played in neighboring countries like the Netherlands, Poland, and Austria though on a lesser scale. Small numbers of Skat players exist in South America, U.S., and some other European countries not bordering Germany, all a part of the International Skat Players Association.

  • @EvilDoresh
    @EvilDoresh 2 місяці тому

    The smaller Skat deck is the de facto standard deck in Germany, at least from personal experience. Packs of Skat cards are just a lot easier to come across. For a full set (or rather _two_ ) you'd need to look for a pack of Rummy cards.
    You can also just get an ordinary Poker deck, but I haven't really seen them "in the wild".
    The "cover card" (or however you call it) usually contains a short rules reference or at least a list of points values, but I've never found it useful to learn the game.
    The game itself might sound a bit odd since you require 3 people to play it, as it is a 2-vs-1 game (with the opening play deciding the exact composition)
    For those curious about the names of the German face cards, it goes:
    K = König = King
    D = Dame = Lady
    B = Bube = Knave (though it's also an old-fashioned word for "boy")

    Skat is played with three active players.
    You’ll need a 32-card deck (using German suits).
    Card rankings vary based on the game type.
    Card Rankings:
    In suit games, the four Jacks are top trumps, ranked as follows:
    Clubs, Spades, Hearts, Diamonds.
    In grand games, only the four Jacks are trumps, ranked similarly.
    In null games, there are no trumps, and cards rank differently (A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7).
    Point Values (suit and grand games):
    J (Jack): 2 points
    A (Ace): 11 points
    10: 10 points
    K (King): 4 points
    Q (Queen): 3 points
    9, 8, 7: 0 points
    Total: 120 points
    The Deal:
    Randomly choose the first dealer.
    Deal 3 cards to each player, 2 cards to the center (the “skat”), and then 4 cards to each player.
    The dealer sits out if they are the fourth player.
    The Auction/Bidding:
    Players bid to determine the declarer.
    Forehand (F) bids first, followed by middlehand (M).
    Senior players (F and M) only need to match their junior’s bid to win.
    Bidding continues until someone passes.
    The declarer chooses the game type (suit, grand, or null).
    Game Types:
    Suit Games: Trump suit chosen, Jacks are top trumps.
    Grand Games: Only Jacks are trumps.
    Null Games: No trumps, different card ranking.
    Playing the Game:
    Declarer plays against the other two defenders.
    Declarer tries to win tricks to fulfill their contract.
    Use your Jacks strategically-they’re powerful cards!
    Remember, Skat combines skill, tactics, and a bit of luck. Enjoy the game!

      Skat is a traditional German card game played only with the cards from 7 through Ace (which in Skat is the highest value). if you use a Poker (or in Germany: Rommé) deck, you discard the Jokers and the cards from 2 through 6, as they are not needed. Skat was very big with German Boomers, so basically every stationary and games store had Skat decks on sale. They are so common that for the longest time I thought Rommé sets were the odd one out.
      Please don't ask me how Skat is played, though. I never understood the rules and found it utterly boring.
      Side note: It's pronounced more like Scart than Scat.
