Why You Do Not Need An RO Unit To Be Successful (Fish You Can Keep In Hard Tap Water)

  • This may be one of the most controversial videos I have done. I want to have a discussion about why you do not need an RO unit to be successful in keeping fish. I have heard so many people say that they cannot keep certain fish because they have hard tap water. I completely disagree and say you can keep any fish you want in hard tap water.

Good video like always. Sometimes it’s not just the ph I’ve seen people have high nitrates out of the tap

Guppies love my hard water. I did take RO system and just change all to carbon filters to remove chlorine and chloramine. Right next to water treatment plant.

I mostly agree with you. And I could definitely make my tap water work in terms it’s minerals / PH. My water has high chloramine along with simple chloride, with agents used to make that stuff not taste so bad, and other softening agents, and fluoride. Some of which isn’t gonna kill fish just less than desirable long term. Some kills fish. So for people like me you should be saying just use one of the products to bind up those nasty ammonias for a day and all will be good. But I don’t want those chemicals in my nice tanks that I enjoy working on. And I don’t drink that junk myself. The chloramine prevent spread of disease via water supply to humans. It works. So the municipality has done their job at scale. But it’s not especially healthy to drink or live in. Thanks for the video.

Hey Don, it was a pleasure meeting you at Aquashella in Dallas. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Most of the time like you said, stability is the key to successful fish keeping. I wish I learned this when I first started. I used to chase that magic number. I now have learned what you have said. I'm a better hobbyists for it. I'd also say I'm a successful fish breeder too.

I cannot keep my fish in my tap water which is 600 + tds ( borewell ) for my discus tank. I had to opt for RO ( not DI ) but then a secondary problem cropped up as my Ph constantly dropped as the buffering capacity of the water ( dkh ) was low.

Such awesome timing -- was looking at RODI systems for Black Friday to blend w/ my tap water, which comes out the tap at 1200-1400 TDS. :)

@@WeldonTanks I agree now . I was an amateur hobbyist a year ago .now I have 3 years into the hobby and I have learned a ton more . I was able to breed and raise (uncle Sam’s tropical discus )discus in hard tap water with a ph over 8.
