@Flat Stanley I disagree, as clearly do other commenters and those who liked mine. Why bother m8, I enjoyed it, if you didn't just move on, go watch something else then
Utterly brilliant sketch. I defy any other comedians to reproduce this, let alone in a front of a live audience. Seems to be performed without one flaw. Quite amazing.
And although I know it´s nearly impossible, at least to a fan, to wipe all this away and concentrate on the wit of one simple sketch, I still think the Bits of Fry&Laurie are the most genius pieces of linguistic comedy I´ve ever seen. Nothing against Benny Hill, but he´s more the slapstick-guy and I´m not in favour of this that much.
I was continuously laughing really loud at this and a friend (who doesn't understand any English) came and asked what was so funny. Now, put yourself in my shoes, take yourself through that conversation and come back here if you're successful to tell me how you went about it.
Two exceptional British comedians present a sketch that they proceed to intentionally butcher for comedic effect before eventually realising they've completely forgotten the punchline.
I read your comment yesterday and till now was contemplating a bit about whether I would have found this sketch less brilliant if I would not take into consideration that it is performed by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, who both wrote absolutely hilarious and amazing novels and did the most perfect interpretation of the Jeeves and Wooster-Novels in their Tv-Series. (Wow this sentence was rather too long to make any sense, wasn´t it?)
Hugh obviously "forgot his lines" (but it was of course intentional). The point is that they finally managed to get to the punchline of the sketch, when he "forgot" his lines. ;-)
11 years too late, but no I think the funny part was that they were getting it wrong, then when they finally get it right, they just get to the end of the interaction and the sketch is over. He thinking "um, I'm not actually going to buy a hedge" .. I think
I don't think that we will come to an agreement about hugh lauries and stephen frys comical talent ( it's a shame that you don't see their genious) but you like monty python and this is at least something.
I'm American, and I find it hilarious. I don't think you could say that every Brit would find this skit funny either, though. It's a matter of taste, plain and simple.
@weavehole what amazes me is that someone like prokentsful is defending the comedy of these two, whilst at the same time being obviously unable to grasp the concept of sarcasm, and completely missing the humour in your post. puzzling, innit?
I think the joke is that they've built up the sketch by doing it wrong to that point three times, and when they finally do it right, and speed through it, they suddenly stop because they don't have anything else for it. The irony being that the audience was expecting a punchline.
When you now like B.Hill there is perhaps still a chance that you will like them as well someday even if you don't think so at the moment. I hope so for your own good :-)!!!
But if you like Monty Python, I´m sure if you steep more into their work (Jeeves and Wooster is here on youtube), you´ll see that they´re just incomparably magnificent in what they do.
@FRMariposa You are, of course, correct. Thanks for noticing. I was so astonished that nobody got what I thought was an entirely obvious joke (inc House and Hackney Carriage references) that I began to assume that the insults were themselves subtle jokes. Still not sure they weren't... Internet did done weirded me right out.
In the great roster of shop sketches, this one in my view ranks well behind Monty Python's cheese and parrot and the Two Ronnies' fork handles. And probably several others besides. I curse the algorithm that brought it into my life especially since, by yielding to it, I am now being bombarded with adverts from an organisation calling itself Hedge Direct, which is a pleasing oxymoron is nothing else.
Don't think I can say I speak for "every American", as a matter of fact, I can honestly say I don't even know most of them. But I do know what I like. I think my problem is I did "get" the joke - and found it amazingly unfunny. Perhaps the drollery is just too sophisticated for me!
It cannot be overstated how clever this is and how difficult it must have been to write, learn and perform. They're geniuses
@Flat Stanley I disagree, as clearly do other commenters and those who liked mine. Why bother m8, I enjoyed it, if you didn't just move on, go watch something else then
This is so funny ! When they actually start to ask and answer questions in sync, the only question not asked is ‘ how much is it ? ‘ !!! 😂😂😂
Possibly the most well constructed and executed sketch ever
Utterly brilliant sketch. I defy any other comedians to reproduce this, let alone in a front of a live audience. Seems to be performed without one flaw. Quite amazing.
The Two Ronnies did it first. The Mastermind sketch
@Flat Stanley ...you don't need to put these guys down in order to say the ronnies are good. You realize they'd all probably be friends right?
@@PointsofData once upon a time maybe they would have been, both Ronnies have been dead for several years.
For something along a similar line, maybe take a look at Alex Horne ‘Ultimate Lip Sync Challenge’
Can't imagine how difficult it must have been to pull this off. Mad lads!
This is EXACTLY what it’s like to have to do a performance with your classmates for a project in school
I've seen this before. It happens when you're so intent on getting your lines right that you aren't listening to the other players do their lines.
That must have been very hard to learn.
No it wasn't
@Pleoryo I could not have a look at that, thank you.
@@Cypeq your wife, perhaps?
Not at all, if you'll pardon the pun.
May I ask is the hedge for you?
The layers of this sketch are just brilliant!
Genius, this sketch. Pure, undiluted genius. I want to shout it from the rooftops.
F & L could simply read from the phone book and I would giggle with delight.
0:07 was that a mouse down there?
lmao
hugh laurie and stephen fry are some of the coolest people ever
idk lol
This reminds me of “the play that goes wrong” 😂
I adore The play that goes wrong. So far I've only found one full play on youtube...
Yes, I’ve seen ‘ The play that goes wrong’ too !
Hilarious !!!
An instant classic and so brilliant. And yes, difficult!
They are so incredible! That was absolutely amazing! Lol. It takes true talent to pull that off. Im in awe. These men are brilliant!
They are comic genuises! Everything from the timing to the facial expressions was dead on. Love you guys!
Totally daft but absolutely brilliant.
Two of the greats in my opinion 👍
Nonsense is the essence of British humour.
Absolutely awesome! That sketch should be much much more famous than it is... Can't wait to try and perform that with my comedy group.
When you haven't prepared a group presentation in school...
Genius. Wow, honestly, wow.
Did anyone else see the big as hell spider at 0:08 ?
Try mouse rather.
robert using rather doesn't make you fancy also you used it wrong your comment has no meaning
Yeah Robert. Just who the hell do you think you are? Using rather in comments and using it wrong and making comments with no meaning.
Calirobo omg yes
Wow, that's a beefy one. Definitely too small, low and not-having-a-tail enough to be a mouse, that's a giant rosebush spider alright.
Thanks *so* much for posting this. I saw them do it on Saturday night live and have never forgotten it, but not seen it for ages. Thanks again.
Wow, those guys are really smart!! This is great! Thanks a lot for posting it!
And although I know it´s nearly impossible, at least to a fan, to wipe all this away and concentrate on the wit of one simple sketch, I still think the Bits of Fry&Laurie are the most genius pieces of linguistic comedy I´ve ever seen. This is Art!
“Come on, on the phone, on the phone!” best part
I got an ad for hedging after watching this.
Imperial?
I was continuously laughing really loud at this and a friend (who doesn't understand any English) came and asked what was so funny. Now, put yourself in my shoes, take yourself through that conversation and come back here if you're successful to tell me how you went about it.

I was laughing out loud, too.:D
@@tomcrook5269 "completely forgotten"? I counted twenty-seven punch lines, and I can only count to twenty one if I use all my digits.
Great great comedy!!! Hugh is adorable!
Off-the-charts talent.
The lights go out awkwardly. What a great ending.
Absolutely genius sketch
OMG how I LOVE this sketch. Can watch it over and over again and laugh every single time. :)
brilliant - pure genius
I wonder how hard it is to get back on track if you *actually* mess up :D
Hugh is the one who mucks up each time but he is the one getting annoyed.
sharp observation, that has to be the best part of it all (:
absolutely brilliant.
The Two Ronnies did the same to hilarious effect, but this is on another level. Brilliant, shades of Python, too!
Absolutely brilliant.
What is your assessment of this sketch, Sir?
@@lister_of_smeg6545 Yes, i do find them as good...
This was so clever!
Great sketch!
But I can't help but notice the mouse tripping around behind them (0:07) :D
Bloody brilliant
Did a mouse run across the stage of the moment they came on? Watch the bottom left
Never seen this before. Impressive! Shades of The Two Ronnies.
0:08 is that a mouse running across the stage?
Excellent sketch!!!
Whoops ...I haven't watched it yet.
i love hugh's hair
Two comedy geniuses.
Am I getting this right? A hedge? As a hedge in a yard or a park or something? :)
Looooooooooooove Stephen and Hugh, btw!!! :D
Very reminiscent of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, don't you think? :)))))
yes, I'm not married.
@@BadWebDiver we want ...... A SHRUBBERY!
All in on the gimmick. Brilliant
Bless.. the beginning reminded me of the Two Ronnies' Mastermind sketch
And the whole hedge thing was reminiscent of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. But this took all that to a whole new level! :DDDDDDDDDDDDD
Pure comedy genius!
That's genius 🤣
By the way it moves I would claim it's a mouse.
Haha, best sketch ever.
Where is Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson when you need him?!
Rest in peace, you magnificent man..
0:19 imagine being the guy who *booed* these two fellows before they'd even started!

Years before "The Play That Goes Wrong".
is that a mouse? At 8 seconds
At least the mouse didn't screw up his/her lines. A true professional, that mouse......
but why is there a mouse running on stage at the start of the video?
You are right. They are not "funny." They are hilarious.
I don't think that we will come to an agreement about hugh lauries and stephen frys comical talent ( it's a shame that you don't see their genious) but you like monty python and this is at least something.
This is sooooo funny!
Hilarious sketch. They are so funny.
Did Fry and Laurie write this sketch themselves?
Brilliant!
Brilliant and hilarious. :-)
I didn't get the ending though. :-/
@prokentsful
Did you spell 'too' wrong on purpose?
:)
I'm American, and I find it hilarious. I don't think you could say that every Brit would find this skit funny either, though. It's a matter of taste, plain and simple.
...just to check for absolute certainty, the very last joke is that they can't remember the rest of the sketch, right?
That's a very long way of saying "yes"
@wolfe dima 2019 isn't a century. That's the one thing it isn't. It might be a decade or a millenium, but a century - I fear not.
Das brilliant, dat is.
this gave me so much anxiety
So clever!
For some random reason when i played that back and saw it i started crying with laughter!
This is some Monty Python level shit.
The original play that went wrong
It's because they don't remember what comes after that part. And that's the end of the actual sketch. I'm not sure I'm being clear...
@weavehole what amazes me is that someone like prokentsful is defending the comedy of these two, whilst at the same time being obviously unable to grasp the concept of sarcasm, and completely missing the humour in your post. puzzling, innit?

I think I would have preferred a deliberately bad and anticlimactic punchline at the end, but other than that this is perfect.
I disagree. The way Stephen's character is looking at Hugh's, Hugh's character has forgotten the line after all that build-up
@@vibraphonics I think it is that he does not have the cash. They forgot the props so did not know where to go next.
When you now like B.Hill there is perhaps still a chance that you will like them as well someday even if you don't think so at the moment. I hope so for your own good :-)!!!
Dumb question but in the context of the hedge sketch itself what was the joke supposed to be
Springy Slinky there wasn’t supposed to be one
@weavehole No. But I can give you another clue. This was also a smartass question.
I am dying!
What's up with the last minute or so?
Why are they just fidgeting around?
Could someone explain?
They must have run the fuckery out of those lines.
did anyone see the cockroach running across the floor at 0:07?
Nice catch
But if you like Monty Python, I´m sure if you steep more into their work (Jeeves and Wooster is here on youtube), you´ll see that they´re just incomparably magnificent in what they do.
I prefer a bit of fry and laurie over monty python, even though I love them both
smart!
Speedrun: "Hedge Sketch" / Hard / 100% (no glitches)
I do love this sketch! Stephen and Hugh together more so, though.
I agree with the above comment.
genius lol
