Correction: Weight distribution (front/rear) is rear-biased 40/60! Not 60/40.
So does that change what you said about the lift-off oversteer?
@@TranceFur no, that would make it oversteer, as opposed to being front biased making u understeer
A PHEV with a 100 mile all electric range for $35k makes perfect sense. A full EV with 100 miles for $35k does not.
That’s why Mazda has the MX-30
That’s why it’s a city car!
@@perfectcar3079 It needs to be priced like a city car then.
@@perfectcar3079 A city car for 35k? No thank you.
Ya, that’s too short for range.
Substitute Topher sounds like Topher with a cold lol
This doesn't feel like a finished concept, it is still in development and there are a lot to improve.
Come on Mazda, the competition is fierce
This is a purely compliance, proof of concept vehicle. All that cork, the weird shifter design, the 2nd screen for HVAC - all of these are semi-concept things.
They know that. That’s why its only sold in California. It’s a bridge, its not meant to be fully baked.
Mazda pushed this out I think as like a Concept to just see how the people like it
Why so many beeps in the beginning xD
Mazda 🤷🏽♂️
Seat belt not fastened. 😩
This would be better in a hybrid at least in California where you might have to drive 100s of miles in a single trip.
We have a hybrid variant of the MX-30 in Australia - which is not only significantly worse in fuel economy than competing hybrids from Toyota, but also close to being matched by ICE Honda Civics, embarrassingly.
Substitute Topher? Why do you sound just like him 🤣
"It's so easy to get in and out of you know" if you know you know 😂
Definitely saw you driving by my house in this thing a week or so ago.
Good job, substitute Topher!
Very strange not to hear Chris here, but the sub is kinda similar in vibe anyway
$33,000 is a lot for a EV with 200 mile range..
this only has a 100 mile range
@@kristians2704 SO even worse LOL
I can actually deal with an $33,000 EV with only 200 miles, that’s actually livable somewhat. But 100 miles is completely useless no matter how you justify it.
@@BoldBrandFlakes that would last me 2 days. To work and back for 2 days. With no stops the rest of the week. This appeals to the city driver who has a short commute and doesn’t drive much.
@@jordanb.7564 I get that, but if Mazda actually wanted to appeal to city drivers then they would’ve just made a Mazda 2 or a Mazda 3 Hatchback EV with better range and a cheaper MSRP. Kinda makes no sense to launch a somewhat pricey EV SUV that can’t even crack 100 miles. It makes more sense for city commuters to just buy a Nissan Leaf…
These guys are so midwestern and well spoken and articulate. I like it.
sheesh mans got boulders on his arms xD
The foot space in the back is tiny. But I like the overall idea with this car of being eco-friendly and unconventional. It looks like a fun daily runabout.
They brought this to North America but not the Skyactix X engine? What a shame.
This vehicle is made for me here on the east coast. Can't wait for the release to the rest of the U.S.
I'm excited for this car.
Omg this was unexpected... great review thanks!! Been looking forward to this. I think this will hit a very small market of buyers but I like how mazda eases there way into things without going all out on their first try...
and thats why mazda is broke....
@@441meatloaf Evidence of this?
@@Montana270 Mazda has requested 4.2 billion yen to the Japanese govt for a bail out in mid 2020 as they were in deep financial problems, riddled with excessive debt they can't even meet to pay off the interest alone. You can google this.
They ran out of cash essentially cause their operating cash flow was more than 100% negative year over year since 2017. IMO this has a lot probably to do with their marketing strategy which honestly isn't working at all.
So as a company overall, they are definitely not doing well financially. Their CEO has stepped down and was replaced.
Mazda's largest market is only the USA and local Japan. CX4 is kinda dead in China.
in europe, Mazda just can't compete since there are way too many brands that offer better pricing and specs like Skoda, Opel, Renault, etc....
$33,000 is cheap for a 100 mile ev? What
Mazda messed up on this one.. BMW already made this mistake with the I3. Expensive compact car, horrible range, no space.. I guess Mazda needed to learn the hard way!
No you have it wrong. This is simply a bridge for Mazda future products, they don’t expect to sell any.
$33,000 to start with only 100 miles of range, that’s pretty pricy compared to other competitors
Substitute Topher was very harsh on the Mercedes GLC for not being luxurious enough for its price, but he is very positive with this 100 mile range, 140hp, $37k EV that would've been outdated in 2012.
😂😂😂😂
Mazdas are actually reliable though
@@tylerc4229 what does that have to do with this?
This and the Mercedes GLC isn’t worth it’s MSRP
@@kristians2704 mercs are trash bro
Regular Topher: BMW XB7 Alpina. Substitute Topher: 100 mile range EV with 140 hp. This seems like a slightly skewed distribution of press cars.
I think this car is awesome for a 2nd city car, just to get groceries and do various chores economically. It is safe, nimble, fun to drive, economical. Yes it lacks range but as long as you know it is not for traveling on the highway you are going to be fine. On the other hand, it can charge fast from a home charger while other cars with double and triple the capacities take 2x-3x the time to charge from home.
2:50 top gear reference lmao
If this was a hybrid I'd be all over it, but I can't justify 100 miles of range.
I'd expect a minimum of 200 miles of range.
If I was just driving in the city I'd rather spend more and get a Kona EV or just buy a corolla hybrid.
Not to mention when it’s cold outside the range will drop even more.
“Pretty cheap” 36k 🤣🤣🤣
Most EV are 45k+
My biggest problem with car is the price. Range is for a city car, but it seems to drive more like a sporty-ish canyon carver. I havent driven one. So very new! But man! I'm interested...kinda
I really don´t know what the Mazda engineers are thinking to build this EV ? and the price from over $ 30k is nuts for this car. ( Start price in Germany is $ 41k. )
**PLEASE** Put a correction in about the "60/40". It's a 40/60 (literally!) and that's a world of a difference from what you said.
Sweat lord
100 mile range?! What are they thinking?
Is substitute Topher related to the Topher?
This thing has some big ass blind spots
2:24 The lights look like ferrari lights lmao.
Great review! Vehicle is overpriced.
good💖
The start chime sounds like a Windows 98 type of beat.
I hate it but the car is nice!! Hopefully they figure out how to add more range to it lol!!
I also don’t like the rear doors… they’re kinda annoying.
Their target audience of first time EV buyer in my mind is someone looking to save money on gas. Probably an only car situtation, but this could never be an only car.
You have a good point
i hope you see this but please can you drive a Mercedes’ c63s amg
3:15 is that handsome squidward?
Why is there so many chimes when turning it on?
That is for the seatbelt. On newer Mazdas like this the chimes sound a bit too many times than usual.
This is only available in California FYI
Bruh, please manufacturers, STOP trying to make EV's all quirky in design man. There is a portion of your user base that I'm sure does not like quirky looks. Just electrify the existing Mazda 3 Hatch, give it just under 250 range, price at 35k and you can undercut the arrival of the cheaper EVs significantly. Take the loss now to gain the market share! Gorgeous Mazda exteriors/interiors will drive people toward you.
A very good review of a very not so good car.
So Mazda made an i3 competitor…. Did they not realize this would be dead on arrival?
They realize it. They aren’t stupid, it’s a bridge product.
I don't mind having a small range but 160 km range with 35 kWh battery? The car doesn't seem very efficient then. However, that sound system really sounded great!
P.S. If you're Topher substitute, does that make you Tofu? NVM XD
It is a heavy car even without the battery, like the CX-30. Still, it has great equipment for the price, and it has very, very good safety ratings. I much prefer a heavier safer car than a more "efficient" car that is going to be less safe for me and my family.
Why does everyone justify electric vehicles price by there range? We don't do that with gasoline cars lol
woah that sounds like it's got good build quality with the doors and all, or am I just tripping?
how many miles are you drive with a full charge battery ?
100 miles
@@darisrashid thanks.
I love how it looks like a normal vehicle but it's an EV. Rather than trying to look really weird and edgy
Is substitute Topher, Topher's son?
For all the crap this thing deserves for the paltry 100 miles of range, I will say that the interior is just really nice. Hell, I think the car itself - despite the funky looks - looks pretty good overall. I'd totally consider this as a super compact commuter city car for myself were it not for the laughable range. Either that, or bring the price down to $25k or so. It honestly feels like Mazda dumped most of their budget into everything *but* the drivetrain here.
Weird move to sell a 100 miles range car these days and not so much practical. It’s going to be tough to sell.
remember, china has a mini EV that has 75 mi of range for only $5k
This makes absolutely no sense. Basically a half car considering half of the car is plastic cladding and it having half acceptable range.
I do think it has a cool factor but geez
Who’s gonna buy that?
It’s not that practical, not a good performing car, range is horrible.
I mean, if this was a sub 20k car then maybe, just maybe..
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if these things start getting $10,000 discounts like the CX-5 diesels did at one point. There’s literally no reason to buy these over the CX-30 at that price and with the range.
34k for that little Toyota Prius POS?! Come on mazda!
Should be $20k+ not $35k. Better make it a hybrid for that cost
The car companies making EVs are the same people who made fun of Tesla
This vehicle would get a full 💯 if was not short of a 💯 horse power and a 💯 miles more range.
💯 percent
Why on earth did they give the rear passenger the ability to adjust the drivers seat. The switch is in clear vision and I totally would have messed with the switch as a kid
can’t do it when someone is sitting in the seat. they’re not complete idiots
$33k hot wheel literally made of garbage bring that price down Mazda
Weird direction for them usually they’re so good at fun/quality for the right price
This Mazda EV is not worth it. Range limit doesn't make sense for an EV. Rear door are small, windows too, no panoramic roof, same old infotainment, average NBH, and more flaws. I expect it better from Mazda.
This should be Hybrid
Not gonna sell....stuck in traffic and going up grades that 100 miles is gone and your sitting on the side of the road
EVs don't use anything in traffic..
Why do EVs have to look so awkward?
I like Mazda, but this gets a no from me .
It is not cheap
I was excited for this because it seemed like a Mazda 3/30 but EV, which meant an EV with an excellent interior for once with good usable buttons.
And so I see they, naturally, ripped out the amazing interior/half the good usually buttons and gave gimmicks.
F
If they make the hybrid less of this but hybrid and more Mazda 3 but hybrid, then I won't call it a failure.
What! Who da hell are you? Topher's brother? You have the same cadence as him but not exactly. You threw me off 😂🤣
just get a kona ev
The car nice but the range 100 mile for 35K is horrible sorry Mazda least have it 500 mile would be ok 👍
Lol I wouldn’t even take it for free.
Didn't like it... Sorry, Mazda!
Car defeats the whole purpose of why electric cars became popular
Too noisy for an electric car.
This is a car for a college chick .... she can drive to the farmer's market .... drive to her yoga class .... charge it up for a few hours .... while it takes her 4 hours to get ready to hit up the bar scene ..... other than that .... PASS
LMFAO! well this is only sold in certain markets... thankfully... because this isn't cutting it against other EV cars.... 100 miles is beyond sad and even more sad for a full loaded model price.... the interior is so compromised... smh Mazda! lol and the black cladding is ATROCIOUS
What a nice looking shit car this is.
what a joke
Wow garbage range
What is with this obsession with volume knobs by car reviewers? You have volume buttons right on the steering while that are vastly more convenient than any sort of knob.
It's not convenience that's the issue.
There is nothing more satisfying than a well-designed knob - and you can quote me on that.
I love that volume knob on my Mazda 3. You can adjust the volume faster than with the steering wheel buttons, or just push it to mute.
Steering wheels knobs are incredibly inconvenient.
Steering wheels, wait for it, turn sometimes.
They're nice when the position lines up. Which is often. Often is not always. Things that are designed as an only choice and work "often" are design failures.
@@cpMetis If you are turning your steering wheel so sharply that you can't reach the buttons on it, the odds are you aren't simultaneously reaching across the dash to turn the infotainment volume knob.
Let me ask you this - if fixed knobs on the dash are so convenient and ergonomic, then why do high-end race cars make everything a button on the steering wheel?
@@ARCNA442 Because high-end race cars aren't made for comfort and convenience. That's why they're high-end race cars.
A Golf wouldn't be improved by using the seating position of an F1.
Excellent review, terrible car. Only fit for single people who don’t drive much.
Clown car.
Man that is an ugly car. Brand new but the exterior design already looks 10 years old.
