I miss Mary SO MUCH. The things that woman told me, and the way she was as a person, maaaaan. I'm almost sobbing, some lost ones stay with you and mourning them never goes away.
I'm a Stereolab fanatic and I grew up in a small coastal town in Queensland Australia and Mary was born in Maryborough, about 80 km away and have travelled through their many times on rest stops as a child on road trips. And as we're of similar age wonder if we ever crossed paths and her pre-Stereolab magic touched me. Such a loss. I've since wondered if her parents named her Mary due to her birthplace, Maryborough.
I remember when I first heard this song. I had just moved in to a basement apartment near Chinatown. The song came on and it seemed to sum up the feeling of freedom I felt.
Although I think their next couple albums were better, this song just slays me. So heartwrenchingly beautiful. Laeticia is just wonderful. And yes, Mary... so painful to lose her.
i had a very bad 7 year stretch in my life in the early 2000's. this song takes me back to the time BEFORE that bad period when, as i call it, it was the last time i was happy.i love going back there. this is easily in the top 10 of my all time favorite songs.
"Materia sensual e incoherente / la infancia es más simpática / la infancia trae la magia /¿Qué hacer cuando está todo hecho? / leído todo? bebido todo comido todo? / se ha entregado toda la verdad y en cada detalle? / cuando ya has llorado sobre todos los tejados? / lagrimeado y reído en las ciudades y el campo? / La infancia es más real /jardín de las nuevas visiones / La casa, la casa, de otros tiempos /la casa, la casa que hemos perdido /y el silencio que se cuela dentro de mi"
HEY EVERYBODY! UA-cam doesn't have a replacement feature for swapping out the original uploads and keeping all the views and comments and fun stuff. SO I'M UPLOADING THEM AGAIN! In the coming weeks there'll be brand spankin' new and higher quality encodes of all your favorite videos! When you see a new upload of an old favorite (for instance you can find THIS one HERE Stereolab -Cybele's Reverie (Live on Jools Holland) [NEW] ) please be sure to like it, comment on it, and share it so that it gains traction in search rankings and I can eventually replace the old versions altogether. Thank you all so very much for all the positive feedback and thanks for watching!
This is a perfect Pop song. Thank you for posting this. I believe there is a special place in heaven for people that can appreciate this and also Can and maybe the Fall.
Mary's death made me sadder than I ever could have expected. It made me realize that her vocal fills were the thing I fell most in love with during my deep affair with this band.

Yep, looks like indie's hairy beach boy propping up a rhodes there. He did all the string arrangements of course (as I'm sure you're aware if you can spot him from a glimpse of his barnet) ;-)
Fair enough. No disrespect, an easy enough misunderstanding to make: you meant John Peel in the overall sense. Still, I absolutely know that without a doubt I am right about that being Mary in the green dress and red hair. She would always sing or play guitar in the front with Laetitia and Tim. The woman on keyboards with the white blond hair on stage right/house left is Morgan Lhote, who replaced Katharine Gifford right before the recording of Emperor Tomato Ketchup.
Even though the camera never really shows Sonic Boom I instantly knew it was him. The guy exerts such a unique presence, even when he is just in the background.
caterpillarmilk (i guess) refers to the live mixing guy. i´ve been to hundrets of live gigs and there is always a guy on a mixing table, mixing the band like an equalizer on your mp3 player ;)
One day if someone asks me “who are your inspirations for your music? I will triumphantly says The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Stereolab, and LCD sound system.
they are kinda like steely dan in that their music sounds like easy listening or smooth jazz, and yet has more intricate and unpredictable composition than 99%+ of music people listen to.

cool story
My 6th grade Social Studies teacher got me into this band four years ago, and this still is my favorite song to this day.
I hope that led you onto Tim Gane's other amazing band McCarthy. The guy is a genius.
@@MrHarvey1968 Will check it out!
One of the best bands of our generation. This band paved the way for a lot of what we hear today.
Although I think their next couple albums were better, this song just slays me. So heartwrenchingly beautiful. Laeticia is just wonderful. And yes, Mary... so painful to lose her.
agree wholeheartedly. this was THE standout cut from etk

Mary was the perfect texture to this band, such incredible artists. Great song.
If Bossa Nova originated in France and crossed over to the UK after being inspected in Germany. I'm addicted to them.
Bossa nova is from Brasil

Amazing performance!
Mary's socks are so perfect in this video; her sense of style was as amazing as her voice.
Impossibly chic and wonderful. Would love to have been present. What a memory to have.

Gran cancion, gran banda...evoco tantos recuerdos...me destruyó.

THE FRENCH ACCENT IS BASSY! Great song
beautiful feminine voices working in tandem
stay your Lab
yes. what a horribly sad loss. Poor Mary.
Mai sentiti prima grande YT
I have just realised that there is a similarity to Orange Juice's "Falling and Laughing". I adore both however...
caterpillarmilk (i guess) refers to the live mixing guy. i´ve been to hundrets of live gigs and there is always a guy on a mixing table, mixing the band like an equalizer on your mp3 player ;)
Criminally under-miked vibra-slap.
Tours 1998 je suis célibataire et j'écoute ce titre en boucle
Me gusta, son originales :)
holy shit
Check that
@madinkaya Mary Hansen, la chica del tamborín y encargada de todos los preciosos "la-la-la".
One day if someone asks me “who are your inspirations for your music? I will triumphantly says The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Stereolab, and LCD sound system.
rip mary
The unfortunately named "Vibraslap." Hard to describe but you'll know it when you hear it. If you look it up on wikipedia you can hear a sample.
They look so basic. But god the music they made on that stage was extraordinary. Hands down one of the greatest songs ever.
they are kinda like steely dan in that their music sounds like easy listening or smooth jazz, and yet has more intricate and unpredictable composition than 99%+ of music people listen to.
Who is the keyboard player at 1:47-1:54?
lol i hear ya bro!
Come again??
It's fine. I can't sing at all so this sounds flawless to me.
ha!
song needs more tambourine!!!
What's that thing Mary is holding?
way way ahead of you
Okay, I was going from memory... Mary's not playing guitar, but tambourine. But she usually plays guitar. And the dress is admittedly green...
Yes?
Ah. You work with people like us guys. Good luck not tripping over the dumbest things. Peace ;-)
