The Mubende coffee plantation and the bitter taste of eviction | DW Documentary

- Coffee production comes at a cost in Africa. 4,000 Ugandans living in Mubende were forced off their land to make way for a new coffee plantation in 2001.
The Hamburg-based Neumann group, a world leading raw coffee trader, were behind the new plantation which left thousands of Africans homeless. The military razed houses and huts to the ground in four villages, destroying fields and food supplies. The forced evacuation even cost the lives of a number of locals.
While one of many cases of land-grabbing in Africa, Mubende was among the first to be properly documented. Many of those evicted lost everything they had.
With the help of human rights groups they took the Ugandan government and the Neumann concern to court. The trial was dragged out over several years, however, until a ruling was finally reached in March 2013 - in favor of the plaintiffs.
In the spring of 2015 the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural and Social Rights looked into the Mubende case, and called on the Ugandan government to restore the rights of the expelled small scale farmers. In July that year, however, the original judgment was provisionally overturned by the domestic appeals court. The case is now still pending. The victims fear they still have a long struggle ahead of them.

I'm from Uganda. I'm constantly amazed at DWs commitment to objectivity. Well done.
I have researched about this case, the allegations of being compensated are false and the people are still fighting in court for their land and compensation.Thank you DW for shinning alight on this sad eviction.
And blame the government of Uganda for betraying his own people for money this is very disgusting
m7 has no brains, he only knows how to fight
Blame those Europeans as well !!!
Eron it is not just happening to undeveloped countries - Global Corporations are doing it all over the world now -Against the peoples will . the biggest Corporate investors are from the middle east , China , India Etc.... And its also the governments of all countries now that are now controlled by corporations . It is harder for you , i have no doubt of that - but understand what is happening is important .
NO ITS LOTS MORE THANT THAT.
HE HAS $12 BILLON IN HIS BACK POCKET ROBBED FROM AID.
That's evil! Say no to neumann coffee.!
Neumann sells coffee beans to many other companies whose packaging doesn't need to include the Neumann source, just the country of origin of the beans.
@@carm738 unless you have money. The only way justice is given is when a group takes it
Nuemann coffee is a business, they don't social responsibility to the people uganda, the dictator Museveni has auctioned off the country to highest bidders. He stated with parastatals which he sold to indians, then his generals followed, they own thousands of miles of land illegally.
You see day time slavery, they take your land and hire u to work on the farm because you don't have anywhere to go

This is horrible! Nobody should be treated like that in their own country!

Neumann and the Ugandan government must be held accountable for War Crimes and the land returned to it rightful owners!!
The only way they can be stopped is to boycott their coffee and products worldwide.
As long as they are making money and able to bribe the leaders, the problem will remain.
But it's your evil western governments that continue to give legitimacy to these dictatorships governments that evict we Africans from land for your Economic interests

Shame on you German coffee company for pretending not know how the land was aquired and you're a disgrace Uganda gov't for accepting the German bribe & inhumanly evicting the vulnerables.
We should stop buying coffee from this company until they paid back what has been stolen.
Please DW, continue updating... hoping they can get the right pay or reclaim their land back.
Shame to the Ugandan government for selling it’s poor people for man had money 💴. It’s. Shame
I think shame should be on our African governments!!!
Yes, buy East Timour coffee instead of German coffee.
@Beatrice Collins Does that make the slave owners any better?
Shame on the Government!
Thanks DW for the professionalism and impartial reporting not forgetting to highlight the plight of the downtrodden
This is happening everywhere, people compensation should be part of ownership, they should be stakeholders of change, not victims of change.
Take back the land
That is my mother land but sometimes i feel embarrassed of our government which treats it's people like that. Corruption, tribalism, poor roads😢😢. Thank you #Dw.
"i feel embarrassed of our government", "Corruption, tribalism, poor roads", is growing rampant in far too many countries, including west/westernized.
The Hamburg-based Neumann group, a world leading raw coffee trader, should be charged for mass manslaughter of men, women and children triggered for the company's violent land grabbing in Uganda.
This is no mere monetary issue. It's an issue of manslaughter of Ugandan's for capitalists European profit. And it's an issue of violent exploitation for European profit, Ugandan's who survived the manslaughter.
Companies like FB and Google say they help third world countries but i bet they dont do shit...
@WalkOn Bye you don't need to feel bad for going to a better life, that's the way you can help cause helping yourself first is a must

Because of greed and bad leaderships.
This is so sad 😢😢😢😢! Why, why destroy their livelihood just for greediness 😢😢😢! I am very careful when buying some of these goods here in the U.K. 😢😢!
this is disgusting, compensating these people is actually peanuts. God willing, I will soon join this fight on a financial front.
Western governments have backed Museveni's dictatorship in UGANDA for over 35 years so that he helps them achieve Their interests by grabbing our land. You western governments are fool of evil...China should over take the western countries
The west still runs their bullying colonial policies in Africa and parts of South America, but you really don’t want the Chinese, they make the west look like Girl Scouts.
I hope Betty and her family gets justice. It will never replace both her parents who were murdered though.
They should call for a boycott of this coffee company
Good job DW tv, this is such a good documentary.
Thank you. We are glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent
Amazing documentary thank you
Good to see what African politicians do to their own .the government must never be stronger than the people who put them there. You displace natives and provide no alternative solutions to end poverty in your country..This is why I say slavery happened because of the greedy and gullible among us and it has not ended ..god help Africa to be rid of pupout government and politicians who oppress their own!

A very good illustration of:
1. Poverty as structural injustice
2. How poverty is created
3. How Europe underdevelopes Africa...they are the same people who label them as - developing countries
4. How Africa's black colonizers work with the west to plunder Africa
5. The undying spirit of African people in the pursuit of justice.
Great job DW.

Land grabs happen all over the world. Here in the US, they just call it “imminent domain”, take what they want and pay you a nominal sum. Doesn’t matter what it’s worth to you, doesn’t matter if you don’t want to sell. Some friends of ours had 15 acres annexed by the city, who then turned around and sold it to a nursing home to build an assisted living facility. It happens everywhere.
In the US they have to pay fair market value. These people didn't get that.
That's a different situation, stop been blind or bias, how many people have their livelihood and positions destroyed?
@@bokononbryan Thank you in Jamaica the bauxite company always pay fair value and then some
Someone should find the owners of the company and take justice to them anyway possible
Thanks DW I'm a Ugandan who loves coffee from now on take a sip knowing that your coffee might be a result of sorrows of someone
What a disgrace these so called foreign investors have become. This is violation of human rights, these poor people need to be protected instead of being exploited.
Feels so sad to see those people suffer. The big greedy companies from the developed countries are still sucking wealth out of Africa, even after the colonies are gone. Great work by DW.
With plenty of help from the respective African governments.
It's horrible when you are forced to work on the land you used to own after being driven out. Land ownership need to be properly documented, that is part of the problem. If Africa wants to progress, education is a necessity. Only the educated can one day stand up and protect themselves.
The schoolhouse is the key to these people being compensated. The company built them a schoolhouse after they took possession of the original school house. Schools are built where there are communities, families, and children. If the company built them the new school then they knew they should have built them housing as well. The schoolhouse is the key to proving that their were communities already in place. The school house is the key to these people getting compensation for what they lost and the pain and suffering as well. This case needs to be at the United Nations.
As a Ugandan my heart hurts the pain is unbearable. Why are we allowing this in Africa?
You can say that again
To make matters worse in the same area there is yet another fatal dispute between the locals and Abid Alam of the Alam group. The government is doing nothing for the locals and president Museveni justifies such actions saying the locals are barring development and quick arrival to mid income status.
It is good that DW tv highlighted the issue on international leve so it is the lesson to others.
There are many such victoms in other parts of the word who are not listen yet by any local national or international agencies.
We Africans always work in cohort with foreigners to hurt our kind. This is just a textbook case of the prevailing situation....
There is NO proof that the german company had any knowledge of how the Ugandan government was treating its OWN people, STOP being racist to german and whites! Speak only on what YOU have proof on! Your comments are ugly racism!

Trying to watch a lot of documentaries because I have time have been well-informed about a lot of things I am a coffee connoisseur my husband and I love it we drink it all day even at bedtime I looked up this company to make sure that no subsidiaries are in America cuz I never want this coffee to cross my lips I don't like the taste of Thieves
This case needs global attention
I'll never understand why people would do such cruelty to other people and animals. It hurts my heart to see such inhumane actions. God will hurt those who hurt his people..
Great report as always DW
Seeing this doc in 2019 when similar cases are still on the rise leaves no hope and its goes deep to show how this government has clearly failed its citizens
Peter do alot for local people and we see how you stand for them. Good job
DW should have another documentary about it, it’s been 4 years since this report. We would like to know what’s the latest on this case. People should stop buying coffee from Neumann coffee
Thank you Senior Counsel Joseph Balikudembe. May the worst befall all those involved in the suffering of the Mubende people, mostly the government officers.
Honestly, if I'm able to talk to the Ugandan Government, this will be the first word I say. Go #FairTrade™

The rich living off of the backs of the poor as usual ...no coffee of any kind for me or imported bananas and what ever else is not come by fairly.
Thank you for the great documentary 🥲
Sometimes I wonder y army soldiers don’t rebuild home’s instead harming the people by making them homeless. The question is Who’s really reliable for that kind of act
my prayers goes to the people 🙏
the best tool man kind has it boycotts Neumann Coffee.
In cases like this, the courts will never give justice, you have to take care of the problems yourself
I'm glad I've never been a coffee drinker, but I'm still qutting tea, sugar, cocoa and supermarkets in general, including discount stores and the big chain places. I'm turning to local food that's only grown in my own country, and buying clothes, shoes and so on in charity shops.
I hope these people get back their land and their lives back. My heart goes out to them, they’ve lost so much. Lost their land, homes, family members, friends. So sick of hearing how these companies and countries absolutely wreak havoc on these peoples lives, rights, and countries. Thank you for these documentaries
this is a good piece. We are still suffering with this NRM/ Museven government and investors.Another should be done
When people are rich they think they can treat people like garbage. And our leader are savage. Human rights are violated. Thank DW for this eye opening.🖤🙏🏿
Shame on the African government for allowing this to happen.....period

Now you see why people start living in the bush,I would get me 5 gallons of gas and roast every bean before harvest.
Really? Trying to teach them a lesson?😢🤤
As a Ugandan, my heart is very heavy after watching this! What is the status in 2024??
Its amazing that the court took so long for just a hearing. The president and the government of Uganda should have compensated these farmers immediately. What the coffee plantation owners should have done is build proper roads with running water and electricity with proper homes for these farmers with schools and a hospital for the people of this region. Why didnt the foreign farmers who confiscated the lands from the original farmers buy there own land from the government instead of evicting the people from their lands. Each individual farmer should be paid million of dollars for lost of land, agricultural produce and the animals that were killed or taken by the soldiers. The foreign investment by coffee companies makes billions of dollars annualy so they do have enough money to compensate the original land owners for their property.
Hamburg has a pretty large coffee factory in the heart of Coffee Plaza even though there are no coffee farms in Europe. Wow! Europe is such a special green continent! As well as the coldest of the kind!
These corrupt government officials/agencies must pay the price and the illicit deals must be overturned/nullified and those victims must be fully compensated by laws that require lifetime incomes from the land use....
Very good documentary!
Western governments have backed Museveni's dictatorship for over 35 years so that he helps them achieve Their interests by grabbing our land. You western governments are fool of evil...China should over take the western countries

Hi @macdonald muli! Thanks for watching, we're glad you liked the documentary :)
This is sad shameful and should be put right i will share and help this to go viral. Its very wrong Uganda should be Ashamed. This is why Africa cannot arise because your own people are behind thier suffering. The government should be held accountable.
Walahi whoever involved in this will keep paying forever in their lives
If the villagers agreed to the sale why would an army be required to move them on?
My same thoughts🤔🤔🤔
As a Ugandan am disgusted and disappointed in my government. Land grabbing is really a big problem in our country
Is there any updates since this documentary
good job...verygood
The same thing done in South Africa . At that time the ones doing the eviction was white settlers
This is heart breaking. They take what they want and turns a blind eye to the terrible outcome they have created. They could have at least provided better solution or offers for the people. And yet, after knowing what had happed the coffee company still pretends they did not know? And to make matters worse, the spoke man (manager) seems to be in disbelief with the number of people that occupied the land? That just proves the fact that they knew and just simply did not care. My heart goes out to the village people.
I don't think I'll be drinking anymore coffee
