    Every time I go to Dadant the staff is always talking good about. On the first receipt I got from buying a hive they made sure to write your name down so I could watch your UA-cam! Thank you so much for your videos, this is my first year beekeeping and this information has been helpful. I have already went back to Dadant 3 times, with an open wallet - couldn’t stop at buying one hive. Take care and hope you keep this channel going!

    Hey Kamon, another great video. I wanted to ask, ... I bought a "clone" German grafting tool from china about 6 months ago. It came, but it seems like the edges are sharp. Is this because it has to be really thin to get under the larvae or is it because it's cheap and needs to be sanded on the edges to remove the sharpness? Thanks for responding.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 роки тому

      Might ought to smooth it out a bit it doesn't need to be sharp but it helps if they are thin

    • @SergeantMajorH
      @SergeantMajorH 4 роки тому +4

      Yeah, emergency queen response works great. Throw a frame of brood and young larvae into a 5 frame nuc with nurse bees and in less than 24 hours they have already started new queen cells. Really simple if you need to queenright only one or two hives. They'll make easily 5-10 queen cells on one frame.
      You can also cut those queens out from that hive of 5-10 queen cells before one hatches and kills all the other queens, and put that peanut onto another queenless hive's frame and there you have it. Good luck.

    • @myrlstone8904
      @myrlstone8904 4 роки тому

      Don, check out the Nicot system in that case . Follow the included directions to a “T” and you should have good luck. Actually that goes for the complete process - a string of simple but each very important steps which must follow a strict time schedule. Kit is a bit pricey but you can find knockoffs on Amazon. If you go that route and the system works for you, invest in the Nicot.

    How would I know if I had a strong enough Drone Area to proper mate a queen if I raised my own?

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 роки тому

      as long as you have drones flying there should have enough drones in your area to get a handful of queens mated. unless you are in a desert!

    Not entering for a draw. I am lucky that I have never seen any small hive beetles in my hives (SF bay area).
    Thanks a lot for sharing your expertises, as always, Kamon. I only have two hives. So a dozen of queens are still way too many for me. lol. I make queens using the dumbest method: Walk away split. It doesn't always work. But I think my success rate is > 80%.

    Hi Kamon, thanks for this series on rearing queens. One question. It seems that the primary requirement for successful rearing is LOTS of bees. What if you are a backyard beekeeper with, say, half a dozen hives. How many bees do you need to rear queens? Do you need hives that are packed to the point of swarming to get your nurse bees from? I don’t want to deprive my existing hives to the point that they struggle in order to start making queens. Does my question make sense? BTW, please do not consider this comment for the beetle buster. We don’t have a hive beetle problem where I am located and the beetle buster should go to someone who needs it. Thanks, Stu

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 роки тому

      I do understand what your saying. I find my biggest colonies must be pulled back to prevent them from swarming so this starter/finisher was born of pulling from the big boys. Perhaps after your honey flow has started and towards the end of it would be best.Keep in mind once you done raising your cells you can break this nuc back down and give it back to some colonies or just leave a cell in it and have a new massive nuc. I am hoping to work on a better system for hobby beekeepers but this is the best I have at this point. I think I have something promising I am testing out right now.

    I have everything I need to try this when it warms up. Thanks for getting the close up of "scooping" the larvae up. Very helpful!

    Hi Kamon, new beekeeper here. I was wondering how you keep newly emerging queens from killing the other queens before (or after) their mating flight?

      10 days after the day you graft the larvae the queen cells are removed and placed into individual colonies for mating.

    Still no idea how "grafting" translates to Hungarian but nevertheless this video was super interesting and I'm glad I found your channel!

    A suggestion is to practice on drone larvae and then work down to worker larvae.

    Already grafted and raised some queens. Placed 7 of them this past week. Thanks for your videos!

    Clever tip, to take the comb away!
    Thank you! 👍

    I had zero acceptance using hand-dipped wax cups - they were always cleaned out after grafting. Switching to plastic cups made all the difference.

      Weird how that works but it truly upped my percentages also!

    Thanks Kamon. What timeframe do you typically graft queens? Are you mostly concerned with the overnight temps for your first grafting of the year? How late in the year will you continue grafting?

      I start the 3rd week of March and can go to early September

    NICE video on grafting Kamon & Laurel! Great camera expertise on Laurel's part. 👍 The recent 2 days of frosts at night did NOT help.

    I just bought a German grafting tool.I was glad to see you use it,because needed this demonstration.
    I will see which one I like better. Just wondering do you sometimes flip the larva upside down or do they slide off pretty easy?

      Sometimes I mess it up just like in the video. This happens to us all. if it gets flipped or hard chuck the larvae and go after a new one.
